    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

I met Andy in 1997 when looking at Pete Powell's demo Stylus . He took me to see Andy so I could see one under construction . Andy's build quality exceeded Pete's by a country mile !! Soon after that I ordered a kit and Andy was my inspiration to build well .He was and lived F1 24hrs a day and was a lovely man. Sadley I went to see him in hospital twice before his eventual funeral very soon after. Once my car was finished I started competing with Andy in support more often than not. He gave me a compliment(I think?) by saying my car wasn't bad for a farmer turned landscaper !!! Yes , I know Marty too , at that time they did most things together . Andy built more of Marty's westy than Marty ! I trailered itdown to Swindon for it's race spec loom then again to BTB and back for the bespoke exhaust manifold and silencer . Andy gave me so many little bits and pieces to fettle the car , Marty now doing the same and we are still in touch. Seems like you are near to me in Herts ? I'm between Tring and Aylesbury , perhaps we could meet for a tyre kick in my shed , ha ha ! Rob

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

    Hi Rob

Small world eh??? I've known them since about 1995. I got to know them both through Steve at SBD. We used to go sprinting most weekends when Steve first started and we spent many a good weekend away racing. Had a superb holiday with them in Florida in 2000, went drag racing and to the Don Garlits museum which is just like a mecca for any petrol head. Andy loved a V8 as I'm sure you saw his truck. Had a brilliant trip to the Begian GP one year too, there younger brother Johnny is a really funny guy. I hadn't seen the pair of them so much in recent years, with all the changes in there lives but always had a good laugh when we caught up again. Must admit I was absolutely gutted when I heard of the seriousness of his illness. One of lifes really nice guys. We must have brushed shoulders at some point as I was at his funeral too.

I know what you mean about Martys westie. I did a lot of the chassis mods and parts machining as we were building the two westfields side by side when steve was doing the new race car. Does Marty still have the Westy?

I live in Welwyn mate so not far really. Be good to meet up at some point.

Keep up the great posts on the stylus, great reading, I wish I was as good for my own thread

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

I met Johny a few times but not as often as Andy/Marty as they had the same house. The Westy was sold very soon after Marty moved house without ever having turned a wheel in Marty's hands . It did get a magazine test and write up when Steve built his track version but then Marty sold it to a guy in Scotland for £10,000 less than build cost !!! That guy then won his Northern championship more than once with it. It was a very special car which you well know ! I have a video of me at Goodwood which , if you turn the volume up , has Andy talking on it ---- I often listen to it too. Andy had other toys besides his Stylus ---- a V8 yanky pickup in mint condition , a Droop Snoot Forenza with all the right bits !!! and for some reason a little Trabant ! The Firenza was his next project which had already been very well chassis prepared. Had a ZF box too ! Better stop now as it's getting off topic ? Rob

It's your thread mate, you carry on. I, as Matt's brother, also met Andy and Marty a few times, those two were as thick as thieves, always had plenty of stories.

Even more amazing ------ the small world is becoming a golf ball , sorry for chosing such a boring sport comparison ! We really should meet sometime , two brothers on this forum and youboth knew Andy . That's the one disadvantage with my car not being road going ----- can't meet up on a drive out to check out our cars.

Loved this car since the first time I saw a Striker. After your mods it look better than ever. Do you know what is happening with the manufacturer? Can you still get these kits? Might be interested now when I sold my caterham.

Yes , I know the manufacturer very well and we keep in touch but he / Tim Benbow SSC / had to make a living back in his previous business after 2007 , due to such low sales . He developed it into a kit of ' modules ' in an attempt to improve the finished kit and to cut down on the huge ammount of supplies he needed to hold when people build as they go and phone for a half hour chat then order now't or something below 20 quid.
Tim's strong points were development and being a DEMON driver on track but being based in Llanidloes didn't help when kit sales fell. After an offer for SSC from me , he realised it wouldn't sell for a good price without orders on the books so I advised him to just shelve it but keep ownership --- with an ' eye ' to the future , so to speak . That's exactly what he chose to do which was a bit frustrating for guys in the middle of build but I've tried to help those that asked via our www.clubstylus.be forum .
Sometimes they come up for sale on our forum , so the history is often known plus I'm often PM'd regarding various questions.
Tim has a buildings refurbishment business plus gets asked to join various rally teams , one being JOHN LLYOD in the Moroccan rally in Oct 2010. He's been up north in the Historic rally/Scotland ? just last week , with the ESCORT M2 coming 2nd overall . So you can see he's still very much into motorsport.
If an order popped up he may be inclined to build a complete car or possibly a 4 module kit but I don't think he'd get the kit chassis and parts business going right now ---- too much effort and not enough profit plus he's doing a lot better now running his present business . Not his words but my oppinion
Two or three guys have recently bought Stylus's for pretty low prices and are busy rebuilding them with progress being written up on our forum.

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

Now the engine's all running sweet I'm getting withdrawal symtoms . Not had it on track since Sept 12th but I mostly run it up to temp ' every two weeks or so and that gets your emotions going .Can't see any chance till well into 2011 though ---- h'mmm . Been doing a bit of chassis cleaning which on these cars is vital if you want it to stay rust free . The 25mm tube's just 1.4mm thick so if wet gets under the powder coat , it romps away. I scratch around with a screw driver looking for bubbles or flakes then use two coats of bilthamber hydrate 80 . After 24 hrs I paint it with hamerite . It's usually where Ive hit it with something when getting at a tricky position otherwise 90% of the powdercoat is ok but if I ever built another chassis then I'd treat and paint it. Bilthamber's great to use being water based and world wide proven above any other treatment .

Ah ! , know who you are now Duncan. My friend bought a geared starter like mine but never used it due to fitting a different engine than planned . It was for a Zetec but the adjustment plate can beoved or changed . Look on clubstylus.be and contact Matt Downes. The supplier is lukemotorsport Aylesbury , look them up on google , don't recall whether they are .com or . Co. UK . Great guy and races a yanky V8 at SPA . He can make up any face plate , pre engaged or otherwise .

I'll be at a Goodwood test day in the afternoon session on the 5th April , to see how my rebuilt engine performs with the secondhand head I had to use after the stripdown showed a tiny hole in exhaust port 2 . If she runs without issues then my first event will be the Bognor Regis Goodwood Sprint at the end of April . Fingers crossed

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

The testing was ok without any engine issues . The stars and stripes manta was also there so followed that round for 4 laps .
The Sprint at Goodwood on Saturday 30th went well for me but I really struggled to beat Nigel Baker's Escort this time . Apparently his engine has grown some more power over the winter from 260 to 284 bhp !!! That on a slick shod 625 kgs car makes real opposition . His practice was only 2 sec's slower than me whereas last year we were 8 or 10 sec's apart at practice , so both engine and Nigel were improved . In competition laps he neat me by 1 sec at 99 against my 100 sec's . I ran 98 down to 95 last year at this event from memory .
This convinced me that years were now catching up with me and expected him to win now . Anyway , as he was now fastest , he was first on the grid so I was let go second just after he'd disappeared round Madgewick . This seemed to help me because I caught sight of him going out of St Mary's as I was approaching no name after a change into 4th resulted in a tank slapper which I only just got control of before charging after him . He improved a tenth or so but luckily for me I'd made up 4 sec's on my previous lap which was enough to take the win at 96 sec's --- 3.05 sec's in front ------ phew !!!!

He is definitely going quicker though so with time in the car and 284 grunt , Goodwood in June might be his retribution ?

One thing puzzled me though -- no engine issues then on the day when starting her up for sound test there was a ticking noise from the top ? It did stop after 5 mins but ticked again when at home I started her up to show someone the next day ---- it's newly built so surely itcant be the hyd tappets ?????

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

I talked with Paul Dunnell about the ' ticking ' and after telling him I had to use Redline 5w 30 after the rebuild as they had no race straight 30 in stock , he said in the past he'd tried it but it wasn't suitable for a developed hyd tappets engine but the race 30 was fine . So on his advice I'm changing to Millers CFS 5w 40 three ester full synthetic Competition oil .
We'll see what happens --- he reckons it could take at least one event to clear and refill the tappets . I Hate Noises !!!!!! Brings back expensive memories ?
Ive been invited to the RAF motorsports club's Festival held at Dalton Barracks , Abingdon on the 17th May for a free thrash as long as I give rides to any RAF staff who ask . Hopefully the ticking will have sorted itself out by the day's end ? Then it will be ok for the TWMC June Goodwood sprint .

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

Millers oil arrived yesterday so the Redline got drained and saved for the machinery (well it's only done 80 miles) . Started her up and no ticking but then of course the block and water was still hot from running before the drain . Dunnell said at least one event so perhaps it'll tick when started cold , we'll see ?

Thank you for those encouraging words , I certainly shall be trying hard . You've hit on one truth too --- before I retired , I was competing 15 times a year between March and October , from the South to the North and the West country . Now I just do Goodwood events maybe twice and sometimes three times a year plus a test day --- the rest of the time ' she's ' in the shed .

It's hard to be on the pace at sprinting without the twice a month competition but it's too much of a buzz to stop doing it

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

Goodwood yesterday was greasy as hell in the morning runs , not like very wet conditions but just like driving over oil . Maybe MISTRAL RACING's session the day before in dry conditions left some rubber/oil around then the rain all Friday night and Saturday morning . The lap times told the story too ---- my first practice was --- wait for it , 134 sec's and the Escort SF 284BHP did a 130 sec's on full wets . It was lethal out there .

    In our class were ---
    RX7 5.7lt full wets / two drivers , one didn't arrive
    TR6 3.9lt didn't practice
    Escort SF 284bhp full wets
    Stylus 2lt 231bhp R888's ---------- me

The RX7 failed sound testing twice then borrowed an angle grinder and promptly put slots 3 inches deep all around his 5 inch tailpipe THEN bent them all in towards each other nearly touching . Passed sound ok , went out for a run after it dried a touch , doing a 113 sec's time . Next out it crept back into the paddock rattling and smoking having buggered the engine overheating ------------------------------------------- well what did he expect blocking up the only exit for the engine's heat to get out ? Apparently he'd only borrowed it from his son for the day !!!
So that sorted the really big opposition , leaving Nigel /Escort SF chasing my time as per usual over the last few years . After it dried a little but still very greasy we both did an identical time at 108.91 sec's so he was very enthusiastic after lunch when it dried almost totally with just the odd puddle . Off came his wets and slicks were fitted so with all our banter over lunch he was looking really confident and I was preparing to politely shake his hand after he'd beaten me ------- and try to smile .
As this was going to be my last chance I just gritted my teeth , sat in the car driving the circuit in my head while waiting in line . He dropped some 9 sec's or so but fortunately I dropped over 12 sec's from the last wet run and managed a 96.26sec's beating his 99.23sec's -------------------- phew , got away with it again !

We've competed against each other now for 3 seasons so although I was elated to beat him again , I sort of felt sorry for him as I could see the confidence fall to a dejected and frustrated guy at the presentation . Having said that we do get on well and bantor flows back and forth inbetween being on track . We'll compete again at Goodwood on the BRIGHTON & HOVE Sprint on the 6th of August .

    Overall classes , I was 10th and he was 13th .

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

Had a bit of trouble starting the car just as I was called to the startline twice on Saturday which seemed electrical ----- half engaging the ring gear then engaging but whizzing round for 30 plus seconds before it would star , push starting didn't help either. Once it was back in the shed I took the geared starter off only to find the first 3mm's of ring gear was crunched up a good bit. I assumed it would be engine out yet again just to change the ring gear .
Did a bit of measuring from ring gear to bellhousing face = 30mm's then measured the starter cog end to starter bolting edge = 22mm's !!!!!! Then looking at the cog I could see it had never been fully engaged anyway as the throw had only reached half way into the ring gear . Took it off to LUKEMOTORSPORT and Luke machined off 5mm from the starter body , replaced the adjustment plate which then gave full engagement ------------------ re-fitted and she started first time , job done .

Made one or two minor adjustments ready for Goodwood on 6th Aug. B&H MC sprint . There's no testing at Goodwood before then so have booked a General Test Day at Mallory for £30 less . Only snag being it's morning session only for cars then bikes in the afternoon . So will be leaving at 6-00am to get up there for 8-00am signing on . Never driven Mallory so it'll be an education for me !!!
At least I'll be able to feel the car out before Goodwood plus brush off some ' rust ' from the driver !

Is it a geared starter ? That was my problem , using an after market starter and not measuring properly first time ! Fortunately the front plate of the starter comes off(it's there for adjustability of fitment)so the body of the starter can be machined just the amount that the cog didn't engage into the ring gear .

Rain was forcast but it stayed dry during my sessions at 9-00 , 10-00 and 11-00am . Quite different to Goodwood's very efficient system , no briefing , no sound test ---- just a loud speaker telling us it was time for our half hour session. In fact due to engine noise around the paddock I didn't catch where they said we should come off the track but assumed it would be obvious once out there. It wasn't ---- after 12 or so laps and having a 2 gallon tank I thought I'd better get in for a refuel but went round a further twice before twigging where to come off
I still had an issue with starting once during the day but otherwise the car was fine but the steering seemed mighty heavy through the esses and the hairpin , it's so much tighter around Mallory than Goodwood where I normally go .
I found Gerrards the most difficult to get around quickly and was passed by plenty of other cars through there but the rest was a real blast , absolutely loved the Esses , Hairpin and the exit onto the pit straight. By my third session I sort of had Gerrards nailed and was only passed by a Silluette car that seemed glued to the tarmac.
Two Lotus Cortina's were going pretty quickly but the car I used to learn the track was an MGA who's driver had raced it for 25 yrs and had data logging on board . He was trying to do sub 55's because in his Championship the guy leading was on 54's around Mallory. First session I couldn't stay with him but by the third session he was following me onto the track and got quite close but didn't get by me through Gerrards or anywhere else so I was reasonably happy with that , having never driven it before. Talking to him in the paddock , it seemed he was doing sub 55 sec's following me so although I had no one clocking me , I assumed I must have been around the 55 to 56 mark by the end of the morning.
I've no idea what I should have been doing in my type of car but I'd need a lot more track time there to go much quicker

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

The B & H MC Eagle Sprint on the 6th of August is nearly upon me and the finals arrived today . It seems my friend in the Escort spaceframe hasn't entered --- a shame . However , there are two others in my class that I've never come acrosss before .

Hugh Maund in a TRIUMPH V8 4500cc previously done a 96 sec lap at Goodwood
Glenn Mason in a GT40 V8 5000cc previously done a 98 sec lap at Goodwood

So definitely a new challenge seeing as I haven't managed a sub -- 96 sec lap for some time now (96.26sec's in June this year)

After getting the ' finals ' in the post I looked on B& HMC website and saw there were three late entries , all Mazda RX7 5.7lt Chevy's , actually one is 6lt !!! So that's five big power V8's plus me .

1st in class at Goodwood was an RX7 6lt Chevy at 91 something sec's (didn't get a time sheet issued so will check on their website B&HMC once it's updated.) After a real battle with the other 4 V8's , I managed to a 96.04sec's for 2nd in class over the rest with one of the other RX7 Chevy's just 0.08sec's behind me . On that run I was out of gear for 200yds entering no name in 5th looking for 4th but couldn't select it so grabbed 3rd . On the approach to no name and the St Mary's entry , I could just see the roof of the GT40 disappearing down into the dip after St Mary's so then knew I was quicker than him which gave me the push I needed to take more risk ---- what I didn't know until my son walked up with the time card was that I'd also just beaten the other RX7's who were in front of me before this last run.
So that's my 3 year unbeaten record at Goodwood soundly beaten , had to happen sometime aye

Thanks guys for the encouraging words . Actually , after having had several people telling me that 2nd was a good result , I feel quite good about the result plus it made me realise that had I not made mistakes like being out of gear in the middle of ' no name ' , there is a 95sec's in me when I get the right motivation . Winning by big margins ie 3sec's as in past years , tends to make you lazy .
It certainly helps when you are the 2nd car to leave the startline --- when the green light comes up and the previous car is still in sight entering Madgewick !!!

So that's it now for me till 2012 apart from a friendly sprint at RAF Odiham without championship points . Should be nice long straights there so roll on Sept 3rd !!!

Got the entries list now which shows 4 in Sports Libre . A Metro 6R4 , a Chevette 3.9lt , a Fiesta 2lt plus me in the Stylus 2lt. That's entries so far but could well be more by next week . There are some big guns there in the single seater classes from SBD and other British Sprint/Hillclimb champ's . It's a charity event in as much as we all pay a contribution via the entry fees , to the RAF benevolent fund .

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

Wow , what a course Odiham was !!!! Sure , there were straights but there were also more coned out corners than I could remember how to approach --- memory tells me around 15 !!!! I went straight through the cones just one corner from the finish on two of the 5 laps aloud . So got soundly beaten by all the others in my class until my very last run which got me 2nd in class at 143.14sec's but the 6R4 on slicks wiped 3 sec's off me !!! so was 1st in class ---- he's never beaten me in 7 or 8 years over many other courses when I was doing full seasons of 15 events . At least HE went home with a smile on his face.
Lots of fun though , for two thirds the course I was in 2nd and 3rd gears on the limiter at times (8000rpm) . Never got into 5th and only 4th once for 1/3rd mile .

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

I didn't intend entering any more in 2011 but having been beaten by the 6R4 , I've been tempted into running against him again at the Eelmoor Sprint Royal this next Sunday 9th Oct . Of course Eelmoor is where I managed to hit a tree , doing very expensive damage a few years ago ---- never sprinted there since either . Just after submitting my entry a Warrior Indy 6.7lt 4x4 has also entered !!!!!
Perhaps I should have left the Stylus in the shed ------ just hope it stays dry

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

A great day , wet to start but dried out later in the day and the sun came out . First practice saw me level pegging with my class at a very tentative 61 sec's , we were all within tenths . Second practice it had dried a little but still wet under the trees through the crossover esses. I did a 56 plus sec's which put me in the top 10 from 83 entries and first in my class . The first timed run was on a totally dry warm track so with showers being a possibility this run had to ne my banker . I was now confident with no gremlins lurking from my ' tree ' fiasco in 2007 and managed a 54.9 sec's run which didn't get bettered by me over the next 3 timed runs nor did my class mates. At this stage I was 2nd overall behind a much modified Skyliner from 83 entries. The track stayed dry but not so warm and I ended up 4th overall and won my sports libre class .
The guys inbetween FTD and my 4th were a well pedalled Westy and a very quick MGB 400bhp on slicks in the sports modified class.
That's it for me now so I'll have to wait and see if the other guys do well at Lydden which I'm not entering( pennies short)
There's just a chance I could win the class Championship in 2011

Now confirmed that I have won the ACSMC Hamilton Classics Sprint Championship in class Sports Libre for 2011 . Presentations to all will be at Brooklands on Feb 5th 2012 --- a nice venue.

Congratulations on the Championship win Rob

Some good write ups from the year, I'd like to do a sprint at Goodwood, I could never run there with the YB as it was way too noisey, especially on the induction but rallying has dictated that I had to make it quieter and the Duratec is much quieter on the induction so maybe I will get my arse in gear and make 2012 my first Goodwood year

Thanks guys ! It's really nice to still be picking up GONGS , having only entered a third of the available venues. Only limited by money really --- if I just did a trackday or two a year I'd lose the ability to compete . My first venture onto the track each April usually gives me a fright anyway !!!!!!!
