    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

Goodwood has surprised me in 2012 by refusing my application to test there on the 3rd April , their general test day being first Tuesday in the month. To be fair they would accept me if it was for all day at £285 but I've been going just for the pm session for 6/7 yrs now , at half the cost.
The LORD must be making too much money , unless of course he just wants to keep the rif-raf out ? They will contact me nearer the time if they aren't fully booked at full day sessions for 25 cars ---- h'mmm , meaning I shan't know if I'm going till the last minute --- bloody pain !

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

Still no contact from Goodwood so may well start the season straight into an event without a '' wake-up '' session for my old brain !
I'm entering Gurston on the 21st April where I last competed in April 2003 so that will sort me out one way or the other then I'll enter the BRMC Goodwood sprint on the 28th April and again in the TWMC Tonhire on 23rd June. Nothing else planned apart from the invite I always get from the RAF motorsport club to have a free day at their Festival of all forms of motorsport which they organise at the Abingdon airfield nr Oxford.
The only requirement is that you offer a passenger seat to any RAF member who asks for it . Quite a fast course and fun taking guys and girls out who are normally travelling three times faster than my max BUT it still surprises them.

The latest look of my Stylus in 2011 mode . One in the garden ready for the off for last year's Eelmoor event and the other by RALLYGALLERY at last year's Odiham sprint , just lifting the inside front to convince everybody I'm actually trying

'' Exboyracer '' --------- Before retiring I was a landscape gardener so got away with it , as the shed got put up for hiding various machinery . Once I'd bought the ' kit ' to build a Stylus the machinery got put in the drive ha ha ha
You probably can't see from the photo but the shed is actually 20ft x 20ft with 8ft doors and built from 3/4in plywood onto a 4 x 2 in frame . A few tiles up front to soften the look and agri cladding sheets on the roof , held up by two 9 x 3in beams. All my steel rubbish under 4in of concrete floor and it still only cost me £1200 in 1997
The plan to get it past the '' management '' was the 8ft iron ' arch ' that I welded up for plants plus car exit

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

Had a really good test day at Goodwood and noted one or two cars that may be from this forum. An A35 going very well and a black M1 Escort Cosworth howling along the pit straight and going very well . Marshals were saying he was right on the sticky edge of being called off the circuit for db's though but that didn't happen. I managed my best flying lap since 2005 at 92.6 sec's so am very happy with that . Possibly a combination of Millers new nanotech 5w40 and me being on the hospital treadmill last year so spent time on my ' bike ' 7 days a week since Oct 2011 / about 8 miles a day. (keep taking the pills aye )
The STARS & STRIPES MANTA 6LT CHEVY was there again but with his son driving for the first time but I didn't get to run with him during my three sessions. Quickest car there was a racing Porsche of some description and it followed me round for 3 laps about two car lengths behind me then passed me just before my entry into Fordwater at 130mph so god knows what his speed was
She dripped some gearbox oil back in the pits but I'm not enthused to take the engine out yet again to look at those seals. A little vibration through high speed corners too which I'm hoping is just the diff nose bearing needs tightening again.
At the end of the day it didn't start on the last session so got pushed ---- another little gremlin for me to find. Probably the bloody ecu to positive switch which doesn't seem to like too much power going through it --- replaced once last year and this one's only done 16 starts .
Gurston's my first event this season on 21st April and it's the first since 2003 so I'll be a bit wobbley then Goodwood sprint on 28th April.

Nothing to do with that ecu switch . After charging the battery I attempted a start with the switch '' on '' and bypassed ---- all I got was a '' click '' from the solenoid so the starter will be off soon.

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

Have to give a very big plug to LUKEMOTORSPORT / WOSP of Aylesbury. My starting problem was the starter sleeve vibrating when not actually running (my car pulling 8000rpm)so wearing then projecting out from it's position ---- this stopped the connection being made when the starter switch was pressed. Luke repaired and updated it for me over 45 minutes plus parts ------------------------ charged me nothing , what a great guy and brilliant service.(The starter when bought , 3 years ago , was £130 so not much room for profit on a geared starter)
So off to Gurston yesterday for my first event since 2003 At that event I managed a 39.85sec's best. Yesterday after messing up the first practice , generally chickening out going through the HOLLOW and the KINK at the finish line achieving a 44sec's ------- I did the next practice at 39.02sec's then the best competition timed run was 38.79sec's with my last run at 39.2sec's .
Really happy with that and still got to bring the car home ready to assault Goodwood next Saturday.
I was running with specialist hillclimb cars at GURSTON --- RALT , MALLOCK , ETC , all on slicks and very light beasts. The class was 12 cars and I only managed 11th fastest , the winner doing a 35sec run.

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

Goodwood --- a very bad day all round . Weather was crap , cars off at regular intervals , some with very expensive damage . Around 2-45pm a Caterham exiting the Chicane lost control and back ended itself into the end of the pitlane wall , folding the chassis up big time. It's lady driver was being attended to for best part of an hour behind a blanket screen but still not out of the car when an air ambulance landed on track . just hope she's a lot better than appearances looked . We left at 4-00pm having had gear/clutch problems (stuck in 5th through St Mary's) and couldn't select anything apart from ramming it in with a crunch ---- so didn't even practice completely.
An engine out job for me again to see what's what . (it was juddering before my run when trying to creep around the paddock in 1st , even with low rev's and care)

If it was the same Lady then according to the Sun today she sadly passed away due to the injuries from the accident. So sad, but Goodwood is a fairly hairy circuit in the dry, let alone the wet. RIP.

Sorry to bring bad news to the thread, hope you get the stylus all sorted for the next one and have a better result

Yes , I heard of her death after contacting the organisers the next morning but said nothing as it wasn't public at that time . Feel so very sorry for her family , she was just 27yrs old --- quite horrible to have been there and leaves me feeling no enthusiasm for getting the car off the trailer and into the shed , so it's exactly where I left it when we got home.

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

Haven't got the engine out yet but once I'd removed the flipfront then tried the clutch pedal , I noticed the gearstick move a touch. Looked in the cylinder -- it was only half full plus had gel type gunge around the edges , so got underneath to check the box rubber mount with a bar ------ the box moved a couple of mm's away from the bellhousing face . I'm assuming now that either the housing has cracked around a bolt or bolts have sheared and this misalignment has allowed the input shaft to put the box bearing/seal to a leaking position. Hence the oil leaks and juddering.
Today she's coming out so we'll see for sure .

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

Engine's out , bellhousing's intact but there were '' NO '' bolts holding it to the box . How they came loose I just don't know --- I'm a bit heavy handed spanner wise as a rule plus they were threadlocked. Two bolts missing(out through the two holes in the ally housing I guess)and two bolts hanging around in the bottom --- one in front of the flywheel the other behind it . Flywheel's chewed up pretty badly too so it will have to be replaced. The clutch cylinder was half full and bits of gel type stuff in there and the actuator pipes weren't tight either , hence the hyd oil along with the box oil absolutely everywhere. The input shaft had no real play in it so not sure why the oil was leaking out but once I take the actuator apart to check it maybe it will be obvious .
Haven't removed the clutch yet but can't see any springs broken so it's possibly ok . Gearbox may need a rebuild .

Motorsport is going to be on the back burner for a while till funds can sort the repairs

When i had my zetec in the escort i used to lose bolts from the bellhousing everytime the car saw a track. Didnt help that there arent as many bolts as on a xflow or especially a pinto with the RS2000 alloy sump. Gary might remeber but not sure how we solved it. Might have been modified to accept nuts in the end iirc. If you machine a little out of the bellhousing you can get nylocs or k nuts in so the bolts cant undo. Odd to lose ALL though

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

It's early 2011 that I last had the the engine out but can't recall whether I put spring washers as well as threadlock on those four bolts , there weren't any floating around in the housing but I could see circular non oil covered marks around 3 of the bolt holes . I'm assuming the bolts only dropped out , or 3 of them anyway , at Goodwood but loose for both recent events.
David , I'm not sure what you mean't regarding convertion to nuts/nyloc/k nuts If studs were threadlocked into the gearbox then nuts used --- wouldn't those studs also vibrate out seeing as these bolts did somehow

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

I had bolts going into the bellhousing as per normal but the two outer ones had nuts on the back with some off the ally ground off to give room for them. If you want to fit conventional bolts i can send you some M10 nordloc washers which come in pairs and are very hard to shake loose. These with capheads should stay put, you can even put some medium strength threadlock on as well to be absolutely sure.

Ah ok, i used to lose engine to box ones. You can still use the nordloc washers on the others though, they stop any vibration shaking the bolts lose. I would keep an eye on the engine to b/h bolts too still though.

Wirelock? I'd say that would be a surefire way of retaining the bolts.

I agree it would stop them coming out BUT wouldn't prevent them loosening which takes an engine out job to sort. Another suggestion I've had from a friend was to install studs with a '' full blown threadlocker '' then use K nuts ----- just not sure the studs would stay tight and the K nuts are strong enough ? , they look pretty skinny , I've got some on suspension pick-up bolts but are tipexed across the nut/thread and I can see them ----- once the engine/bell H/box are bolted up you can see sod all . I had wondered just how much it is safe to cut out of a FORD ally bell housing (at the top) to see plus be able to tighten ?????
I already have holes cut in it for hyd pipes and at the bottom side for chassis clearance . I saw a guy at an event with a Sylva Striker and his bell housing was drilled all over the top with 40/50 mm's holes , very close together ---- possibly not ally though .
I was thinking maybe just two holes but about 90mm's diameter , just about enough room to put a ratchet in ???

Very nice of you to say so Hoogi , there's a wealth of expertise on this forum which is one reason for being on it but it's good to put your thoughts down in print too --- especially when your hobby/obsession is not of any interest to your neighbours or wife

These with capheads should stay put, you can even put some medium strength threadlock on as well to be absolutely sure.
Just sent you a PM regarding NORDLOCK washers David

    Pm'd back..
Wirelocking is great too, but it has to be done well to work properly. I used to do a lot of it and its amazing how many times it looks really tight and yet you can put a spanner on and loosen the bolt an eighth of a turn, enough to eventually allow the parts to move.. When done right though it is brilliant, just a bit more time consuming.

I went to the funeral of Sandra Harrison-Moore today , the lady driver who lost her life at Goodwood on the 28th April . Shame she didn't get today's sunny warm weather at Goodwood but people speaking about her life , short though it was , told of a glittering career in the medical profession and the church was full plus many standing . RIP Sandra

Thanks , David_White for those washers Having stripped the hydraulic clutch nose ready for the seal kit that's arrived , I can now see what the gel type gunge was in the oil ----- the inner seal within the piston is disintegrating and worn flat on one side The only thing

Didn't finish what I'd intended to say WHICH was ---- maybe the R600 race oil I put in the clutch master cylinder was the cause of seal failure ? Having done it , a mate quickly told me to get it out which I did by flushing through with dot 4 but maybe the damage was already started ?
Anyway , I bolted the hydraulic nose , spacer and front cover back onto the gearbox but had no clue as to the correct torque settings. Asked around , including Burtons , no one seemed to know ---- which is why I guessed it by spanner the first time. This time I used the guess first then pulled them up with the torque wrench , gradually going past my guess settings to end up at 12lbft on the ally to box front cover and 10lbft for the ally hyd nose to ally fronnt cover ----- plus the blue locktite. Hope it's enough ? Definitely higher than my guess torque from fitting it new in 2006/7 .

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

The bell housing's back on the box now complete with Nordlock washers (thanks again David !) Nordlock advice was torque plus 20% , so on went blue locktite and 81lbft with the torque wrench (normal is 66lbft)
Seeing as it was out of the chassis , I also put the new gearbox rubber mount on that I bought at Raceretro this year. Cleaned out the quickshift , regreased and put back on with Norlock's too ! Same on the two mount bolts , Nordlock's I mean !
My box being a Quaife type 9 out of a Caterham , it has a little 50mm steel cover just below the main front cover. It's never loosened before but took it's three bolts out and re-tightened with locktite blue ----- last time the box was out for a rebuild I didn't touch this one BUT thought , well , belt and braces
The Girling clutch master cylinder is also rebuilt and back in place , as is the new ring gear and flywheel/clutch assembly. Ready for engine back in tomorrow. Went to a wedding reception last night so today will be relaxed !!!

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

Engine in now all plumbed up and wired again , just the throttle cable to set full throttle and tighten up. Took the engine mounts off and block breather to tidy up and paint again , they were ok but once everything's out you may as well tart it up again , in case you're lucky and the engine stops where it is for 5 yrs
Waiting for gearbox oil , grease and water wetter to arrive before a start up ''attempt'' --------- well with my history on electrical gremlins , you never know aye

I think I've probably got Nordlock - i - tis now after getting paranoid about anything coming loose again ---- I've got them just about everywhere you can imagine
