I forgot to mention that I'm booked up with Motorsport-events for a COOBME trackday on the 4th JULY , as I've never spectated nor driven the circuit ever and will be competing there on the 26th JULY --- so really need a heads up on the best lines . Hoping to get Ed Moore to drive my car while I observe exactly where he points it ha ha !!!
After that I'll be at the BRIGHTON & HOVE Goodwood sprint on the 2nd AUGUST , EELMOOR nr Aldershot on the 5th Oct then CASTLE COOMBE again on the 18th Oct. That'll be my lor for 2014 budget wise

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

WOW ! -- what a day at Coombe . My first ever drive of the circuit plus Ed Moore driving me around in the Stylus , he's a mighty quick driver and took me to places not visited before , technique wise. I followed the convoy then had my first session , getting gradually quicker lap by lap . Let a few obviously regular guys pass me who were on the ' pace ' straight out the box . Once I'd been round with Ed ' for 12 laps , I realised my normal driving style wasn't the quickest for this circuit . Ed ' was almost ' rally ' style in his approach to corners as opposed to my low steering input style (smooth etc) Turn in was instant as opposed to gradual and in higher gear than my approach for the tight ones . I actually paid for 4 laps of him driving at race pace but he seemed to be enjoying the Stylus so much that he forgot I was in the car !!! He said he loved the car's handling and '' what a lovely engine '' . He also told me there was a vibration in the transmission which I've not felt ? -- also he didn't like my steering wheel -- too flexible , like playing snooker with a piece of string he said !!!! All good stuff and I learn't a lot .

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

Yesterday at Coombe there were 3 cars in my class including myself. A Radical SR8 V8 2.6lt and an Anglia V6 Cosworth 2.9lt , both on slicks and me using Avon zzr 1b tyres .The Radical V8 won at 62 sec's , I managed a 69 sec's after 4 runs -- 74/72 practice then 72 and the 69 on timed runs. Couldn't read the Anglia's time but think I beat him , making me 2nd in class . We'll have to wait for the time sheets in the post unless I can find it online for the DICK MAYO sprint 26th July. Obviously no award for 2nd having only the three of us , hence my doubt .
The course didn't take in CAMP corner , the finish line was just after the right kink that follows the last chicane . FTD was Steve Broughton SBD Motorsport in his 2lt Dallara at 55 sec's . Haven't got the sheets so can't tell you the decimal point .0000 sec etc

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

Goodwood B&H MC Eagle sprint 2nd Aug . Perfect conditions for an assault on my April 2014 Goodwood PB laptime of 93.27 sec's . However , in spite of it feeling good with plenty of grip and the car going well , I just couldn't make it happen --- practice was 101.33 sec's due to catching the previous car then having to follow him at his pace for another 1.25 laps . Too many entries to ask for another run and that was 10-30am -- the first timed run didn't happen till 1-45pm !!! A huge gap between practice and my 1st timed run . I got though Madgewick in 4th flat out without any braking on entry , hence was really flying at Fordwater in 5th (around 130mph) then just as she drops onto tarmac again after going light from Fordwater , I got a front rear wobble tank slapper --- I didn't react other than a very small fettle with absolutely no steering input , it went on for about 300 yards and in my head I was preparing myself for a very hard bank at 120mph BUT it then just settled into a straight line before my entry into No-name -- phew !!!
Anyway the rest all felt good and the lap was 97.26 sec's -- not brilliant but not bad after the ' slapper ' . Another long wait till 3-30pm before my last timed run -- ugh ! It felt quick so was surprised not to be in the 93 's but sadly it was 96.94 sec's . Very dissappointed and can't really analyse where my 3 sec's off my pace went ??

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

Having found myself 3 sec's off the pace at Goodwood in August , I've had an 8 weeks gap to brood on it ---- probably know what the answer is but don't want to admit to it . Anyway , next Sunday 5th Oct I'm competing at EELMOOR near Aldershot where last year I got beaten by 0.25 sec by a guy in a 6R4 who I'd previously beaten every year since 2000 ----- so would really like to pip him in 2014 . He's one of two 6R4's running in my class , a 2.8lt and a 3.5lt . Then there's a very quick Escort MK1 Cosworth that I've never competed against and has been quicker than me at this venue plus an M3 I've not competed against either.
So my target is a sub 54 sec's run if I can manage it , my previous best ever being 54.25sec's. I seem to be trying harder but going slower , a symptom I'm not keen to recognise !!! Maybe next year when my other hip gets done I'll be quicker ?

I forgot to mention that the STYLUS will soon be manufactured again after a long term Stylus builder/owner '' Matt Downes '' recently bought the manufacturing rights/jigs/moulds from Tim Benbow . Tim now works for an Historic Escort rally team but still retains his own original company demo Stylus RT

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

A great day for me at EELMOOR yesterday , beating all in my class by at least 2 sec's . I haven't seen the published report of our times yet as time cards weren't issued , results just pinned up on the paddock office , as they happened , from the new digital timing gear. I know my times though which were practice at 57 secs , 2nd practice all four wheels off so no time . First timed run 54.4secs with the other runs being slower , due to an MGB 's oil slick around the critical corners. So the 54.4secs got me 1st in class and 3rd overall from 80 entries.
    Very happy

Thought so , remember doing 12 or so events a year in those days , down the West Country , up to Curborough and everywhere in between . Andy Silman was the fastest guy in my class then(roadgoing kit over 1700cc) but managed to pip him to the ACSMC class Championship in 2004 . You travelled all over too as I recall. How is Penguin Motors Ltd ?

yeah i too travelled all over the country, and was doing 25 to 30 events a year, but then switched to circuit racing and cut the number of events i did by a third, in theory racing was cheaper with so much less travelling etc, in practise all i did was plough more money into the car!

penguin motors is good, thanks, its growing all be it slowly, once the customer base has grown enough to support it i will be back out racing in almost the same bmw 2002 i used to have

It's too soon to be announced yet but my accumilated ' points ' in the ACSMC Sprint championship means that since Eelmoor's result I'll be 1st in class for the Sports Libre championship for 2014 . Fifth time since winning the Roadgoing 2lt class championship in 2004

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

Been getting bored since last drive in the car at Eelmoor 5th Oct , so have been fitting Anderson plugs to my jump starter (just croc clamps before) and to the passenger side of the tunnel. It'll be much easier now while stop starting around the paddock for sound test and waiting in line behind 30 or so cars , before getting to the starting lights. It gets to temperature quite quickly so end up stopping and re-starting several times which it doesn't like , plus having to undo 6 bonnet clips to jumpstart the battery each time doesn't enthuse my son , or whoever else has to do it . Now the jumpstart can sit in the passenger seat ready to restart then be taken out just before drawing up to the lights.

    makes good sense

especially as it must speed up the process,

i know from experience its not unusual for something to not quite go right, and you end up flustered due a load of rushing around just before they line you up for the off, in a race you can make up some time, but a very minor mistake in a speed event kills you, so doing anything in a hurry before the off is a bad thing in my eyes, it damages the concentration for the job in hand

I went slightly bonkers after Xmas 2014 and also been offered good money on my classic Wolseley 12/48 series 3 . With this in mind , I started to look around for another interesting vehicle to replace the Wolseley when sold. However , having seen an ALFA ROMEO 2lt GTAm replica but with standard engine and suspension , I thought one of these wouldn't come up for sale very often ------------- yes , I bought it. Still got the Wolseley though so not popular with her indoors !
Having caught the Alfa bug when buying my 159 2.4 ti tow car , I've just bought GTAm 15X8 Repro alloys and R888's AND stiffer springs with Biltein shocks , adjustable top arms for camber tweeking too. Now I've just got to get on with it whether ' my body ' likes it or not (wheels/handling kit) ---------- just booked a general test day at Goodwood on the 1st APRIL --- H'mmm , all fools day I know but just need to get in it to feel how she handles with Alfaholics wheel/suspension set-up ! Didn't intend racing in this car , mean't it to be more an alternative to my Bank/P.Bonds etc --- can't help myself !

Click image for larger version Name:	IMG_1167 (Large).jpg Views:	241 Size:	142.7 KB ID:	74304Sadly the 2lt NORD 105 engine has gone pop ! ----- ---- I've got the new lowered uprated springs and shocks/ARB fitted plus adjustable top wishbone arms and new wheels/tyres. I've set the camber/castor and toe up which has transformed the handling. Then I warmed it up along the local carraigeway before intended oil/filter service for about 3 miles . It was doing this and nearly back home when power dropped off and white smoke bellowed from the exhaust !!! I assumed it was water vapour/head gasket issue BUT there's no water on the dipstick and no oil in the radiator , also it didn't boil either. I drained the oil anyway , changed filter and refilled . Started her up with a struggle and she ran on 3 cyl's . Left it ticking over while I washed the car without any hint of white smoke then after 15 mins it smoked again , bigtime. Switched off to find it had eaten 2 lts of the new oil !!!
Had a chat with other Alfa NORD guys and one suggested head gasket but around an oil gallery/O ring . There's no knocking at all either so not a bearing issue fortunately. Who's the best ALFA 105 Nord head man for a rebuild/upgrade ???

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

I decided to take it to Ian Ellis in Sussex . If it's a mess the money will only stretch to a standard engine rebuild but if the issues are minor(read cheap)then it'll be mildly upgraded. Alfa 2lt Nords are supposed to have 132 bhp but I'm guessing it's true power is 120 bhp ish , so 140 bhp plus would be good within my budget. Can't do it myself as I'll soon be in hospital for a new hip. A bugger because my budget would go a lot further towards 170/180bhp if just the parts and machining etc .
Had a good day at Goodwood yesterday in the Stylus though . The intention was to take the GTAm but ----------- ugh. Had fun lapping most things and not caught by several Porsche's that tried me out .

I've got a date now that his present workload has eased off . I trailer it down to Surrey next Wednesday 6th May , so there'll be an opportunity to talk over it's spec. I really hope it can all be done and dusted by the end of May , obviously it's not all in his hands timescale wise with maching to be done and parts delivery etc. I suppose like most small scale businesses , he'll need to accomodate other smaller jobs as they come in , so it probably won't be a continuous job of work BUT nothing wrong with hoping. Even if I get karted off to the ' butchers ' , if it's finnished , at least I can sit looking at it aye !

Yes , it's been up for sale since October last year . I had several daft offers but my patience payed off last week and it's sold now . I must have ' bought it well ' because it made nearly 20% more than I paid for it last July !!! So that's £££'s towards the Alfa engine rebuild costs .

The GTAm is running sweetly now and the Dellortos are being treated to a rebuild kit. Just waiting for Ian Ellis to contact me re - a collect/pay date ! Can't wait to start running it in. I've been driving the road car for two weeks now , after my hip resurfacing 8 weeks ago , so itching to get the Alfa back home.

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

The GTAm replica's back home now , engine rebuilt to uprated spec but not mega power , it'll never compete with my Stylus but should be fun to drive , after all it's over 40 yrs old. I could also do with someone's '' out of date for circuit racing '' race seat , as the existing front seats are Porsche and not sure from which model , possibly a Boxter ? Belts are lap type so they need sorting too.
I've done 300 miles in between the rain since collecting it on the 20th August , so just another 200 miles then can drain the oil and pull the head down. Then I can up the max revs by 1000 rpm for the next 7 or 800 miles and drain the Millers Classic 20w50 , refill with the good stuff/Millers Classic Performance 20w50 Nanodrive. So that's the plan oil type wise , mineral oil till run in at say 1200 to 1500 miles , depending on how she feels then Millers best classic NT. A friend who also has an Alfa 105 Coupe with high bhp(187)only ran it in for 300 miles then took it down to Coombe for an Alfaholics trackday , not even sure whether he changed the oil and pulled the head down(bit soon for that anyway)
You've guessed the outcome ---------------- a rod went through the liner of one cylinder costing another semi rebuild !!!!! Patience is the best policy aye !

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

I'm out in the Stylus to the SPRINT ROYAL held at EELMOOR mod driver training track nr Aldershot this Sunday. This will be my first competitive entry since Oct last year and hoping my driving will be on the pace . It's 15 weeks since my hip operation so still a little stiff but fine slipping into the drivers seat --- just may need help getting out !!! I've entered it in modified limited production class B10 this time as opposed to my usual Sports Libre class. There are 8 others in this class so we'll see how I get on.

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

Should have stayed in Sports Libre . There were 3 6R4's and John Rutter in his Manta GTE 3.5lt V8 and I was quicker than them all ----- bugger . I ended the day 2nd in class B10 and 6th overall from 82 entries. I wasn't on the pace mainly due to lifting too early in my practice runs then being messy through the crossover all day really. Shoulders gave me jip trying to be precise through the crossover , just couldn't use the steering wheel properly. Ended up passing the steering wheel back through my right hand just to get through the exit. Last year here my winning time was 54.4 secs from memory and on Sunday my best was 55.27secs.
Now of course I'm not even certain that I'll be competing ever again which is really upsetting me. I assumed I'd be competing until leaving this earth , well almost anyway.
[B][/WHY--- these new regs for 2016 brought out with no decent warning of their future plans. Tyes , Hans device with helmet to match/with hans posts and a full FIA Certificated rollcage.B] My Stylus has been built , modified and modified and modified since 1998 , costing overall £40,000 ---- yes , I know that's bonkers but correct. If sold , even with it's history of championship successes (6 champ'p wins plus loads of individual wins , 2nd's 3rd's etc) I'd be lucky to return half it's cost . Hence just having bought the Alfa GTAm. Putting a cage into a fully built Stylus , fibreglass everywhere with certificated tube and crash test proof will be ridiculous cost ---- on top of that with side bars halfway up the door and from rollbar to windscreen , I couldn't get into the drivers seat without climbing on top of the car then trying to thread my old body through the top rollbar to screen bars. Custom Cages have quoted another Stylus hillclimb driver £4500 to design/build/crash test then fit , including a certificate course !!! Possibly if I'd bought a tatty secondhand Stylus without my mod's and capabilities for 5 to 8 grand then maybe I'd comply BUT I've already spent way too much to throw thousands more at it.
Then of course there's the hans device. OK , not too bad at £200 for a cheapy with my new helmet bought last year ------ no hans posts though because no bugger told me about any 2016 regs saying I might need posts one day ------ after all this is clubsport not FORMULA 1.
If I was a millionaire and racing a Bugatti or an ERA capable of over 160 mph on major circuits all over the world ------------------------ the MSA would let me kill myself with their blessing ------ they are totally exempt from harness/hans/full cage and sitting up in the air ready to hit a curb or soft ground and possibly end up upside down.
I know I'm bloody old and ranting on but this one move by the MSA (bloody EU AGAIN !!!) has stopped my hobby dead in it's tracks and left me with a big investment for which there's no future use . Obviously you can tell I'm pissed off !!!

One of the CORSA drivers got FTD not sure whether Kevin though . My car and trailer was parked to your left immediately you enter the course/paddock.(red ALFA 159 tow car and BJ A-MAX trailer. Adjacent to the green 420 bhp MGB on wide slicks. What time did you get there , I had all 6 runs so was in the line of cars each time.

Is there anyway you could get the Stylus through IVA (the old SVA) and make it road legal? Then I believe you could enter a roadgoing sprint/hillclimb class (most championships have a class for over 1700cc Kit Cars) where none of this safety cage/hans crap is required. Bizarrely you don't even need a roll-over bar!

It wouldn't need an IVA/SVA because it passed in 1999. However , the mod's done since then over 15 yrs are extensive. All suspension redesigned to be correct geometry at a VERY low ride height (putting this back woud be very expensive plus cause further problems £££) ie. new shocks/springs also the FORCE RACING 3.5KG 13 inch wheels would look ridiculous/girraff like , once the ride height was lifted because I cut/extended them out to take the 13's. Then I'd have to fit headlights , winkers , side repeaters . Screen washer , the list goes on . Basically the cost would be as bad if not worse than having the cage etc. It would also handle like a road car so ruin the car. Until you realise what I've done to it over these last 15 yrs , it doesn't seem a big deal to go roadgoing. Then there's another cost after reverting to roadgoing --- TAX INSURANCE MOT which I've escaped since taking it off the road in 2005.
