Then I'd have to fit headlights , winkers , side repeaters . Screen washer , the list goes on . Basically the cost would be as bad if not worse than having the cage etc. It would also handle like a road car so ruin the car. Until you realise what I've done to it over these last 15 yrs , it doesn't seem a big deal to go roadgoing. Then there's another cost after reverting to roadgoing --- TAX INSURANCE MOT which I've escaped since taking it off the road in 2005.
There is no requirement for your car to actually be a civilised road car. There is no requirement for you to drive it to events. Most kitcars in roadgoing classes NEVER see a public road - mine certainly never did. The requirement is for it to be taxed and Motd, and as long as it is road-legal (in the eyes of the scrutineers) you can even still run it in Sports Libre should you wish to. And being road legal you don't need to show your RAC logbook!

There's no such thing as cheap motorsport - certainly not if you wish to be competitive in your class.

    Just a thought.

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

I have a letter from Mike Duncan MSA tech guy . He says that if my Stylus was compliant in 2015 then it will be in 2016 . I'll put the letter in my log book folder and argue it on the day. So bought a new helmet and HANS device and entered the Stylus in the Bognor Regis Goodwood Sprint on 23rd April.
Just have to wait and see what happens . If they throw it out at scrutineering then I'll sell it .
My GTAm is ready for it's last oil drain now having done 1224 miles plus 160 miles this Easter Monday , going to the Horsham Piazza Italia --- it's been selected for their Alfa stand. Then with new Millers 20w50 nanotech it's off to Novatech rolling road to optimise everything.
I'm entering the Brighton & Hove Goodwood sprint with it in Road going on 7th May !!! Need to hold back a bit though , don't want bent ally arches !
    Watch this space .

Really looking forward to getting on track with it ----- although I've been competing for many years , this little Alfa is going to be a steep learning curve for me after the lightweight Stylus

Didn't take the Alfa GTAm to Horsham , as the weather was rain/sleet and snow going sideways . Today was dry and sunny so clocked up another 80 miles , making 1305 miles since engine rebuild . Waiting for Millers 20w50 Classic Performance NT then drain plus filter , before the rollers session soon.

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

Just booked the GTAm in for a session at Novatech in Slough on Thursday 7th March , hopefully to optimise timing/fuel on the Dellorto's . Getting very enthusiastic to say the least , maybe excited is closer to the truth.
A quick drain and filter tomorrow plus a tad more miles before next week on the rollers.

Sunday isn't looking good here so went out today in the GTAm . Clocked up 98 miles topping 7000rpm on a couple of occasions. Strangely the revcut within the 123 Dizzy didn't jump into action at 6500rpm , so either it's not working or my revcounter tells porkies . It's got 1403 miles on it now so ok for the rollers on Thursday.

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

The engine didn't make the power I thought it may do , considering the spec but what do I know --- Alfa Nords are all totally new to me. After a 2.5 hr session changing timing , carb jets etc , Andy at Novatech got it to 150.6 bhp 131 lbft torque . Having said that , my Stylus was engine dyno'd at 231 bhp then had a rolling road session a few months later at Northampton Motorsport showing 158 bhp ----- so rollers don't mean a lot do they.
This power level was at 7000rpm and was still climbing at 6500rpm then tailed off . It feels great which is the main thing .

I've entered , but not accepted yet due to huge volume entered , for the KOP HILL CLIMB at Princes Risborough on 17th Sept . A waiting game now but such a cheap entry , so worth it at £40

It certainly drives better than the figures would indicate Graham . Apparently to get 180 bhp from a 2lt Nord , it cost around £10,000 which is why most fit the 145 bhp(out of the box) twinspark then upgrade that to 170/180 ish for a lot less money than I spent on my Nord . I wanted originality for long term value though.

Ah , you're thinking of Tim Benbow SSC . He sold the manufacturing rights to a friend of mine . I thought you were commenting on the Alfa GTAm , that threw me for a second. I have two cars on this thread.

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

Goodwood yesterday ----------- couldn't match my PB in 2014 of 93.27secs but was 2nd in class behing Matt Carter's 78 secs RADICAL SR6 but managed to beat a Westy XTR2 into 3rd place. My practice was 99.2 secs then the 1st timed run was 95.6 secs which turned out to be the best run. I seem to be plagued with Radicals in recent years , previously they were classified as racing cars in a class of their own , all than downforce etc. My opposition used to be GT40's , big V8 Triumphs , Cortina's and Nigel Baker's 280bhp MK1 spaceframe Escort weighing 600kgs.
The MSA scrutineer didn't give my rollover bar rear stays a second look , otherwise I'd have had to put it on the trailer and home again with no run. To be honest that's what I expected to happen , so very fortunate .

So roll on May 7th at Goodwood again when I'm entering the GTAm .
Note to self ---- take it easy , don't want it bent . A very nicely prepared Escort MK2 yesterday , rolled after trying to climb the inner Chicane on exit ------ just about written off .

Just got the Finals for Goodwood's B & H Bailey sprint next Saturday ------------- would you believe there are actually 27 cars in the class !!! Mostly moderns , a few classics and even Caterhams . Just need to treat it as a test day (for the driver anyway !) and make sure it comes home without damage . We'll see how I get on in the GTAm for the first time .

    I was 13th out of 22 in class with a 113.46 sec's lap (roadgoing ).A right mixture of car types and age , Nova's , Cortina , Caterhams , Austin 6 cylinder front wheel drive ? , Dolamite Sprint , Elise , Volvo's , etc etc.
From 144 entries I was 62nd . That included a whole bunch of Healey's big 6 and loads of Sprites , the Austin 7 specials class , single seaters and Radicals.

It's a really strange thing seeing that laptime after you've run to your very personal ' edge ' , especially when you're more used to 93 to 96 sec's in the Stylus ------ it's such a totally different animal , a re - education on how to drive !!!
Don't know if you remember MARTYN PHILLIS a long time MG sprinter , well he sent me these photos of my Woodcote exit rumble to Chicane entry , exit .

cool, i kinda got bored with goodwood, because in the beemer it was flat from the start right round to St mary's, at which point i was always a bit of a passenger never knowing quite what way the bumps would send the car, then once onto levant (sp) half of it was on the rev limiter so 98% of the lap the loud pedal was full open, so it wasnt much of a challenging drive, and i wasnt prepared to make changes which only suited goodwood. iirc on slicks, with just under 200bhp in an 900kg car with me on board just cracked into the 99s lap from a standing start

H'mmm , would love to have 200bhp in her and not weigh 1080kgs but not got the budget after buying then improving it all !! I do love Goodwood though , I have time to breath along the straights and think about the next turn in etc

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

Lots of modern quick cars against me at Abingdon. Ended up 7th in class 92nd overall. Don't recall the exact decimal point times but Abingdon course I did 60secs 59secs 58secs 57.41secs then Bentley 67secs 66 secs 64.6secs 64.8secs .Hate the Bentley , 90 degree corners without power steering kills my shoulders , all those bloody cones ! Good fun though and she handled well , just not quick enough to give the Caterham , Clio 182 and others some competition. Didn't touch the ally arches on any cones though which was my main concern on the Bentley course.
Mark Simms RALLYGALLERY took 14 photos of my car on the Abingdon course . I had a look and bought the lot on CD for £25
You can see them for free on RALLYGALLERY , Abingdon sprint 2016 , page 14 ---- car number 43.

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

Yesterday's B&H Eagle sprint at GOODWOOD was very hot , without a hint of rain . The GTAm felt great , I'd played with tyre pressures there on the 16th JULY at the CLASSIC ALFA Trackday . Mostly with passengers but still decided to up at both ends by 1 psi rear 2 psi front and knock it back after first practice if no improvement . It was way better to steer without any loss of grip so ran at those new pressures all day. Practice was no guide on my performance though because the first practice was 88 secs(obviously total tosh) then caught an Escort M2 with 2lt Warrior twincam just after Lavant , so that gave a 127 secs lap. Didn't take another run offered , just so wet through inside my race suit etc and glad to get out of the car.
First timed run was 112 secs then second 111 secs -- skip the decimal point portions as haven't got my time card , left the bloody thing at Goodwood !!! That's 2 secs knocked off by previous best lap/standing start in May .

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

I started the 2017 season at Abingdon Long Sprint , a new course at the same venue but basically it was both sprints joined together , rather than an ABINGDON and a BENTLEY course . Enjoyed the new course and came 7th in class from memory . I've entered nothing since then other than the fabulous CLASSIC ALFA Goodwood Trackday run by Richard Norris , the Director of C Alfa . All classic Alfas of various ages from 1950's to the 1990's but mostly 105 Coupe's GTA's and GTAm's similar to mine . By the end of the day , having obeyed the briefing regs and many owners packing up to leave , my engine builder Ian Ellis/Classic Alfas was in the pitlane up front , just as I drew up behind him plus passenger . He was in his GTV Coupe Stepfront 2lt twinspark , not a 2lt NORD like mine and with well over 200bhp , no passenger and weighing 700kgs (mine weighing 1060kgs)
He got out of his car and walked back to me to say , '' shall I wait for you out on track then we could have some fun ? '' ------ my passenger immediately told him yes and that he wouldn't catch Rob/me in the corners !!! ------ I said ok Ian but actually thought there was no way I'd hold him off in straights or corners.
Off he went then the light went green for me just as he got to Madgewick . I shot off sprint style and caught up with him just before Noname , having gone through Madgewick flat in 4th then Fordwater flat in 5th . On his boot through St Mary's Lavant , Woodcote and the Chicane . He lifted a touch so I went up the outside and slipped through Madgewick in 5th before him . He then took me before Fordwater and I took him again on Lavant exit . It was quite hilarious because this went on for several laps , passing each other really close into the corners and exits . Finally , we were both absolutely on the sticky edge exiting the Chicane and up the pit straight together , when he braked before Madgewick but I stayed on it in 5th , no braking , slipping up the inside so both going through together and me exiting in front . After that we were chequered flagged to end our session BUT no marshal had done anything about us overtaking in the corners , no black flag , no telling off chat from the Clerk of Course ???
I've been going to Goodwood for over 20yrs sprinting and general test days ----- never having ignored briefing regs before , not sure why I did actually. I reckon the marshals were packing up or gone to sleep ?
I digress ------- this Saturday 5th August I'm in the BRIGHTON & HOVE EAGLE SPRINT at Goodwood , for my 2nd ACSMC Champ event this year but have no pit help . Anyone fancy coming with me or meeting me down there ?
Forgot to say that I was 2nd in the ACSMC class Champ'p in 2016 from 14 entries , all moderns with mostly 30 to 50 more bhp than the GTAm , so very chuffed with that in my first year with this car.

    Re: Stylussprinter's Stylus

A mixed day yesterday weather wise and achievement wise . The morning was sunny with hot grippy tarmac till around 12-30 then due to the entry numbers there was no c53hance for an official competitive timed lap before lunch , which I always make my banking lap , no chance . THEN someone opened up the sky and it fell on us , so my first timed run was rubbish at 135.17secs , bloody dangerous too , didn't push either , needed to bring the Alfa home in one piece . Next and final timed run , it had dried some but still variable so wasn't fully confident and ended up with 116.53secs .
PRACTICE , on the other hand was great . My last year's best competitive lap was 111.27secs and yesterday I edged just under that at first attempt with 111.22secs . Second practice I managed to clear that by a full second at 110.22secs , so expectations for more in the timed runs to count were high. Hence 7th in class of 14 entries but my 110.22 would have got me 3rd and some improvement even better - hey ho - but at least I know the car's capable of still more if the weather is with me and I get it right . Only 3 other classics in the class , the rest were moderns and more grunt .
