Anybody know what thread the steering rack on a capri is, I know the mounting bolts and the rack arm lock nut its the rack its self.
Looks about 13/16 or 21mm with a fine thread.

    Re: Thread thread

Can anybody tell me the thread on the end of the anti roll bar (standard mk2 escort), the part that is bolted through the tca normally with a castle nut I believe? Also should the castle nut be secured with a split pin through the arb?

I can't tell you the thread, you should be able to measure it with a steel ruler as it's pretty coarse. It should be metric.
If you use a castle nut you need to use a split pin as you say, you can fit a nyloc instead and if you do you don't need the split pin.

I wanted to know the thread so i could use a nyloc nut as i have no holes in my arb for split pins? I thought it appeared to fine to be metric, but i might be wrong, i will measure it.

doesn't mention whether they're the bigger head or not, non l.s.d's had a 15mm head while l.s.d's had a 17mm head, i've got the 15mm but not the 17 mm, just wondered what strength they needed to be

    Re: Thread thread

it says 100 on the head which i assume would be a 10.0, i'm gonna measure the thread so i can find out what thread they are, also i reckon lsd bolts are longer as i measured today an open diff is 10 mm thick but l.s.d is 12 mm, so i'm loosing 2 mm of the bolt thread, so with the open diff bolts threw the lsd only about 2-3 mm of thread goes into the crownwheel where as it would be 4-5 mm with the open diff.

i went to burtons today too and they only sell the 15 mm head bolts, not the 17 mm ones.

Im just thinking, aloud (dickhead) lol; isnt there a general engineering rule that says a bolt should go into a thread the equivalent of at least its own diameter?

So an M8 bolt would go into a thread at least 8mm, M10-10mm an so on?
Or am I mislead in this?

    Re: Thread thread

If a 7/16" spanner fits it, it is 1/4" bolt
if a 1/2" spanner fits it, it is 5/16" bolt
If 9/16" spanner fits it, it is 3/8" bolt
If 5/8" spanner fits it, it is 7/16" bolt
If 3/4 spanner fits it, it is 1/2" bolt
If there are lots of close together threads it is UNF, (F stands for fine)
If there are not so many threads it is UNC (C stands for coarse)

A 13mm spanner is pretty much the same as 1/2"
A 16mm spanner is pretty much the same as 5/8"
A 19mm spanner is pretty much the same as 3/4"
Anything else and you are using the wrong spanner and deserve to have your nuts rounded off (IMO )

So, bolts that hold the handbrake on are going to be undone with either a 7/16" or 1/2" spanner (can't remember which) so from that you can work out the size of them.
By looking to see if the threads are fine or coarse you can figure out if they are UNF or UNC.
Without looking I would guess they are 5/16" UNC.
ARB is probably going to be 1/4" UNF, but that is just a guess. Using the above info you can figure it out easy enough for yourself if you look.

    Re: Thread thread

That's the problem starting with a bare shell, there weren't many bolts which is why I'm buying new ones. None of the bucket of bolts I picked up with the shell fit these captive nuts and the few others I've got are mainly cap head bolts hence why I was asking for some sizes.

Cheers Dave, I found a couple of more old bolts in the shed. They are 5/16 (1/2" Spanner) and fit the handbrake and front Anti Roll Bar mount holes. I'm not sure it they're UNF or UNC but will be getting a few new ones of various types for bolting up so will be able to tell then.
