    Does anyone on here drift?

I'm wanting to drift my mk2 with a 2lt pinto in it,

ive tracked the car and was very happy with how it handled, I've also done an autotesting on Tarmac and on grass, by no way new to motosport having raced In The past just drifting,

it has a LSD and hydro handbrake, I also have another set of wheels with are narrower to get some cheep tyres fit to, I've been advised to over inflate the rears to help it break loose,

i can can hold a steady drift neatly around a cone or a larger ring and can link a figure of 8,

the closest places to me are Teesside or three sisters, I'm just weary of just rocking up and bin useless or worse and distroying my freshly built mk2,

any advice besides JUST DO IT or go to santapod? Pods over 3 hours so I would trailer it there,

the the only other idea I've had is to go buy something cheep £600 ish weld the diff and use that to learn in befor I use the escort,

I have done a fair bit of drifting now (not that i am the at it though)

but i found it is best to start at autotests i use stick 205 tyres on 8" wheels on the front about 24psi in them and 145-155-165 £3 a tyre from the scrap yard on anything from 6-8" wheels at around low 30's to around 35psi. With the autotests just try to link the full course by drifting.

On another note ifyou don't want to use the escort the closest i have driving to an escort on a seriously small budget was a mazda mk1 mx5 with a welded diff. If you smash it then you won't be too bothered.

I've managed to link everything up on an autotest, I think it will depend on the track as I've had is sliding on track days but was more of a power slide than a drift, it's the speed that's bothering me as I've not tried drifting at speed,
Might keep my eye out for a cheep mx5 then if I smash it up I won't be bothered about it, I have a trailer so carting it rounds not an issue,

Vid of you looks good pal, was that an autosolo? Not an autotest, as you had a co driver so to speak and no reversing? There's only 1 autosolo near me once a year and it's not till next May.

Re: Does anyone on here drift?

The club calls them autotests but others might call them auto solos so i am not sure. I have smashed a couple of corners on my mk2 drifting and it didn't bother me as the paint wasn't that good at the time but it took me hours and hours to get it all sorted again! So an mx5 might be best. Awesome bang for buck too, und bullet proof!

Here is the big hit on the front passanger side at a local drift event.

    https://youtu.be/nJL5esGPxBs

This is one of my best and fastest runs to date when i done ford fair at silverstone. I was happy with some 3rd gear slides. I was lacking in power that day though due to a shorting fuel pump wire. I don't know why but i don't use the hydro bar either, i tend to upset the balance and then get on the throttle

it's will drift in 1st and 2nd gear But in the dry can some persuading to break away in 2nd but I've got 215 tyres at the moment, I'm thinking more of 3rd and 4th gear as it's got a 4.4-1 diff in.

Re: Does anyone on here drift?

ive completed the whole journey from standardish pinto powered to fully blown mk2 running a 2.3 xe etc.

you should have lots of power to have a bit of fun if you make the car a bit easier to work with.

personally id be going coilovers up front running 200 to 225 lb springs, (ideally a bit more but if you want to use it as a road car too id not go any more) , dial in a couple of degrees camber with adjustable tca,s and pull your front wheels well forward to gain plenty of castor and counteract the weighty pinto!! and as mentioned a 2.4 quickrack will make life easier.

and in the back a pair of decambered single leafs with tramp bars and adjustable shocks that you can stiffen up for track use and soften back to drive home!!
you will find this setup will give you the confidence to chuck the car about in control meaning you wont need stacks of power.

in my early days of competition i upset many the "off the shelf jap drift car" with these basic few mods!!

heres a couple of vids of my car in its recent spec.

the twin turbo v8 600 bhp jap car wasnt exactly blowing me off the track in silverstone!!! escorts will never die!!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pcr7AmfvC88

missed a gear near the end of this one,...oops!

and finally silverstone from another angle. one of my favourite tracks. very fast entry into the first corner!

    . Nice,
I've got coilovers on the front with 225lb springs, adjustable tca's adjustable top mounts, anti dive kit,

Rear is lowered 2" on blocks but don't know what rate the leafs are, has an anti tramp kit and is turreted.

One just out at the moment do I'll watch the vids later

i run a twin cam anti roll bar and double width kit to get my caster (the figure i can't remember now.) an camber anywhere from 1.5 degrees to 2.5 or maybe evern more. Any where between 1.5/2.5 will be fine though (although 2.5 is abit mad). and your toe in/out should be slightly toe in or parrallel.

Cheers pal, it's going for the alignment ect checking and adjusting on Friday, he a local guy who's raced all his life and when I called and had a chat, he's going to set my car for track use and I'm goin to loosen the rear for drifting with your advice of narrower tyres and over fill them.

He asked what size wheel what width, what off set and what tyres I run on the road and track, I'm going to do away with my wheel spacers and only use them for drifting so my wheels clear the brakes.

id be going with about 2.5 degree camber and as much castor as you can get without fouling the front spoiler on lock mate.

an easy way to get extra castor with a std arb is to mod the arb brackets to bring the wheels forward bout 10 to 15 mm. to do this you would be better running adjustable tca,s with rose joints as the inner bush wont like the tca being pulled forward too much.
