    Which cam should I use?

    Hi all,

I'm rebuilding my pinto and looking to put either a Kent FR30 (High Torque) or a GTS1 (Ultimate Road) cam in it, just wondering what advantages each one has over the other, reliability and driveability wise (other than the rev range). I'm upgrading the head to the equivalent of Burton's 'Stage 3' and noticed it has a maximum cam lift of 12.7mm, and the GTS1 lifts 12.82mm... If I use the GTS1, that more than the stage 3 would I have to do?

    Thanks,
    Ben

An almost full race engine build.
I have no idea on what the gts1 cam is like but to get 180 bhp it won't be very road friendly but as usual what does ultimate road cam mean ? Possibly one most would hate ? Or most would love ?

I don't think there are many fast road Pintos around with a genuine 180 bhp that you could send your Grandma out to the shops in.

Greaty has just built a road rally engine with a GTS 1 cam, we are eagerly awaiting Dyno results.

My High lift short duration cam install didnt go well for me. Newman but similar spec to FR30. Still dont really know why, switched to an FR31, ported injection head skimmed 10.2:1, mapped ignition. Goes great now and good tick-over too.
Rolling road is booked so expecting good power for a relatively mild engine on a budget.

My 2.1 pinto on John Wilcox's rolling road... +60 cast pistons, Vulcan maxiflow head (45.5mm inlet valves std exhaust valves) Fr32 cam, 45 dcoe carbs with 36mm chokes, Bosch electronic dizzy off a sierra, 129.8hp at the rear wheels.

very nice idle at 900 rpm, lovely torquey motor wasnt fussy at all.

Re: Which cam should I use?

looks good even if + 60 doesnt make 2.1

the big difference here is sidedraft carbs, you wouldnt get a lovely smooth 900rpm idle on a twinchoke

Please be careful if you want to compare camshafts. Newman does not list a camshaft that looks like a FR30 or Piper BP134. It's not because they are both short duration they have any other connection.

For sure the FR30 is a faster camshaft as the FR31. It has more opening surface as the FR31. The only drawback of the FR30 is, it is NOT a slow camshaft, it is an aggressive profile, special where both face to each other. In practice it means, it will not last as long as the FR31 (but usual not a problem due to the better material we are using today). FR31 is very gentle with followers. I don't think in an engine with 2x Weber you can have a real difference in power and for sure the FR30 will always be the best up to at least 5000 RPM.

In short, if you would have compared an FR30 Look-o-like profile with an FR31 and FR31 was way better for you, you where doing something wrong.

I'm no expert on engine building but mines got an fr32 and I'm chuffed with it it drives nice enough when the Mrs and kids are on board and when I'm out on my own thrashing about it picks up the revs lovely. It also has a lumpy tick over which I love.

    No chance you'll see 180hp with a Gts1 and that compression, BF63, a really good head with an RL31, Ht1e, Gt3 maybe.

Re: Which cam should I use?

I had a road going 2.1 Built quite some time ago by Dave Abrahams, 136 @ the wheels, so 160 @ the flywheel, but this was with a 38 dgas, i later went to 45's but didn't go back for another dyno/tune, it had a group A Head with a GP4 cam i managed 132 mph (then realised i was in a 70 zone!) 3.7 lsd, 4 speed box, i am not sure and i may be wrong (probably) but i think the gp stands for George polley/polly? why do you never hear of this type of cam mentioned? He did ask me what i wanted performance wise, i said i want to get to 70, then put my foot down and go! it did just that! anyway, that's my tuppence worth.... for what it's worth.

Re: Which cam should I use?

Many moons ago i had a Mk2 escort with a Burton 2.1 "Rally spec" engine on twin 45s with recorded 165bhp at the wheels.

GREAT fun but it was a bit of a pig in town/traffic and if i wasnt 19 years old would have been a PITA to live with for normal use. It did its best to empty the world of Dinosaur juice too....God i miss it.

Re: Which cam should I use?

Ive just had a twin 45s chew a lobe on Kents Oldschool RL21 Cam

Gutted , to see the back of this Cam , car behaved perfect in traffic , Also had power when the foot went down
I understand the Carbos were not too friendly . . .

From the Info ive read from this forum Ive purchased the RL31 , most said it would be Similar (ish) in performance

Back in the olden days there use to be KC RL 1 and RL 2 cams. I never found out what profile they were copies of.

Gonna throw the cat amongst the pigeons here!
My brother in law had a ht1 in his mk2 with a good head and I found it well driveable. The car now belongs to another member on here called paul_g
If you can get hold of him ask him as he's had it for a couple of yrs now and see how he's finding it!

depends on what your idea of drivable is along with what diff ratio is fitted, a 4.4 will make most cams much more drivable than a 3.54.

if you want to be able to put your foot down at say 2500 rpm in 2nd or 3rd and it pull well, then an HT1 isnt the cam for you

Graham. I bow to your superior knowledge here as I know you are well regarded on here. It had a 3.54 and a gearbox with a really long 1st gear and I don't remember it being boggy at all! I wouldn't be choosing a ht1 either for rd use, I'm just saying how it felt to me.

Fly has a HT1 cam for maybe 20 years now, but the 5.1 rear axle would make anything driveable

    yeah my point exactly !

we once built a very hairy rally x/flow for a customer it was on 45's and an A6 cam, he could barely pull away in it if you tried to drive it like a normal car, swapped the diff for a 5.8 and suddenly your granny could of gone shopping in it
