Any Xr3 cvh engine experts on here ?

We have just rebuilt a engine for my brothers Xr3 ......... new bottom end, head had to be welded in places new cam followers etc.

Starts and runs great but as it gets hot it starts to rattle on the top ......... it was all flushed and had new valves etc 2 lots of hydraulic tappets.

    Any ideas ?

some heads had oversize cam bearing housings, if you have one of those with a std size cam you got problems

If above is the case then it will result in the lack of oil pressure, but not a mention of cam change but the same as rebuilt and no mention of oil pump change. Was is noisy at top end before ?

Re: Any Xr3 cvh engine experts on here ?

    Thanks

I'm trying to get a pressure guage adaptor to check as that was my 1st thought.

Its a new old stock cam he sourced off a mate who is into the mk3's .......... we did not check sizes etc as was told it was suitable, all oil ways well blown out and cleaned, the head was welded by a engine specialist dipped skimmed etc.
Ive thought it was cam bearing or lack of pressure although there is oil in the top end when running, its lovely and quiet on cold start up.

Brand new old stock Ford oil pump along with new bearings etc. crank didn't need grinding he was told, we bought as a non runner and engine was seized so never heard it running, only covered 50k from new, the Ford Garage my brother works at sold it new and was asked to buy ut back ,,,, hence him getting it !!

Most of the Tech's there don't or have never rebuilt a engine so not been much help !!

The car had been parked for over 20 years and we think it was only seized due to poor storage, the head inlets was full of furring up as if not enough antifreeze ?

What grade of oil you using ? Think 15/40 was the correct grade to use.

You say 2 lots of hydraulic tappets.
Did you change the cam also?

The lifters work harden with the cam when bedded in (hopefully properly). If you then chucked in a new set of lifters this will, if not already, have damaged the cam.

CVH's are tappy by nature so what you're hearing could be "acceptable" noise tbh

Re: Any Xr3 cvh engine experts on here ?

Oil currently in there is 10w40 .......... this is the 2nd lot of oil as we had the sump back off to check the oil pickup etc.

We fitted new tappets with the cam but 2 of them seemed not to pump up properly, we thought it was a faulty batch so source another new set and replaced them, the old ones had run for about 1 hour in total ........ car not on the road as yet.

Re: Any Xr3 cvh engine experts on here ?

Cvh engines should not be noisy ie tappety, by there design the hydraulic lifters take up any tolerance or should do. If not either faulty lifters or lacking in oil pressure to pump them up.
Savvi you describe as 'cammy' enlighten, do you mean cam noise or cammy as in lumpy cammy like on a tuned engine?

Re: Any Xr3 cvh engine experts on here ?

Really only two things can cause it, shit quality lifters or lacking in oil pressure. Presuming it's timed up correctly and the valves are not hitting the Pistons. If all checks out OK try holding the revs at say 2500 for 3/4 mins and see if it gets rid of any noise. Have had a couple which took a run down the road to settle in.

Thanks .... I took it up the road and no change, we thought the original tappets were copies hence changing them, going to check oil pressure tomorrow, also wondering if we could fit the original cam back in to see if that makes a difference, didn't look worn we just changed it as everything else was new

Kin hell, that's noisy. I know this is going to be messy and you will ruin a set of feelers. Run with out top off and insert feelers between valves and rockers to try and itemise which ones are rattling and concentrate on those lifters and oil supply. If this is not making a mess all over whilst doing it then I would be looking at a blockage between block oil feed and head.

Just one other thought you have put the spacer plates back in under the rocker guides ?

Someone else said about the feeler Trick ..... yeah I'm sure we put the spacers in ... everything was bagged and labelled and as he's so fussy it took us ages to build it all back up.
Head has cost him more then the block to do as well !!
I think we will be looking for a spare at this rate
