6-700hp axle options for custom build

What sort of axles are any of the MK1/2 guys using ?

Obviously there are some of the US 8.8" or 9", but they'd be on the large and heavy side, although can be built fairly cheap which is a bonus

Is there anything that can be used as a base and readily available in the UK, although with good LSD options available. It would be for a custom built chassis with weight hopefully below 1000kgs.

There are some very fast cars about, what are they using ?

if you genuinely have 700bhp, the most cost effective option is the 9in. Curries, Moser and Strange all do complete axles to spec. If youre trying to do it cheap, you're on a hiding to nothing, for an axle at this power level, you're looking at £3-4k

Thanks, have already decided an 8" is more practical, efficient and lighter. 9" definitely not needed or wanted for such low power in a lightweight chassis.
Curries do seem to do most stuff for them including new casings etc and Gripper do a proper LSD for them, which is something that seems lacking with a lot of the US based stuff

And chassis seems to dictate 3" tubes too, which will be easy with the 8", perhaps less common on some of the larger units.

theres not a whole lot of difference between them weight wise if building to take that much power. You can build a light 9in with ally center section, pinion support, gun drilled shafts etc.

Re: 6-700hp axle options for custom build

I'm using an 8.8 in my own car....but it's over 1700kgs and a "fraction" over 700hp. Even it's a big heavy brute though.

A pressed steel type casing like Currie offer for the 8" should be a bit lighter and front loader handier too. Although not 100% sure if they do the 3rd member housing in alloy for them or not as you can get with the 9"

9" for this project would be serious overkill though and with only 6-700hp a less efficient axle overall. Wouldnt totally rule out a 9", but 8" would be more than up to the job especially when I know what my 8.8 has been put through.

And 8" is bound to be lighter overall. Hell even a bare CWP for my 8.8 is bloody heavy ! No sense adding weight just for the sake of it
