Thread: Atlas axle

    Atlas axle

I am in the process of building a Atlas and I have come up against a problem with removing the side bearings without causing any damage, I used this type of bearing separator but was to thick to go right into the inner bearing race and as a result damaged the bearing, so what tool works the best to do the shimming?

getting behind the bearings can be tricky and varies depending on what diff you are working on.

ive had a puller head made that looks similar to the above but fits the bearing shape better

also there is a big difference in bearing quality and this can make removing them without damage tricky. good bearings have a strong roller cage and you can pull the bearings even if they are very tight, cheap ones have a weak cage and this bends and breaks, lets all the rollers fall out and then they have to go in the bin.

Thanks for the reply, one idea I've had is to buy 2 extra side bearings open them up and use them for setting up purposes.

I seem to remember that's exactly what another member said they did.

Yes i'v done this and makes it easier to setup, the dimensions of the bearings are pretty close so does not affect the settings.
