Time to get ripped in ............

I thought it was about time I bit the bullet and got back in the garage.

As some of you know I had a bit of an 'excursion' in my Mk2 on the last stage of the Dukeries rally last year so I lost interest for a while (hurt pride and all that). I've made some space over the last month in the garage so I thought I'd make a start on the rebuild.

First job was to take the roof skin off (again!!) for replacement and then to strip out the interior. As part of the rebuilt I'm going to put some four link boxes in and stick some tarmac arches on her.

I bit of 'encouragement' has got the rear quarters fixed but I've got some new front wings and door skins to put on.

Unfortunately the crash in the Mk2 has put my other project back for a while

If you look closely you'll see the Mk1 shell is sporting a double roof skin ............

    Cheers

    Andy

Whys that? so if you roll that one you can just peel the skin back and have a good roof underneath?

    Hi Andy,

I was only looking at your site a couple of days ago and wondered what you were up to, now I know

I didn't know you had an excusion, what happened mate?

anyway, it looks like your well on with the repairs, you must be good at putting roof on by now

Re: Time to get ripped in ............

    Steve(s),

Not a good start to the rally with the accelerator cables melting on the start line on the first stage but things got worse. Here's the Mk2 just after being dragged out of the last stage (Sherwood Pines).

We hit a bad rut/hole when hard braking for a 90 right which chucked the car into a bank and sent the car rolling.

We finished up with the car on its side leaning on a tree pointing back up the stage. The speccies rolled us back onto our roof but couldn't get it back over so rocked the car from side to side - hence the roof damage. The engine had then spat most of it's oil out so that meant game over for my first forest event..........

The oil was that hot it melted the paint!

    I'll be back though

I took the cage out and it went back on it's mountings without any force and the wheels are all pointing in the right direction so things aren't too bad - just nearly every panel was dinted

I said I'd never do another roof skin ............

I'm pleased to say it did otherwise it really would have been an expensive day out.

We put some oil in it before taking it off the trailer (power washed it at the local garage first just in case it caught fire). It fired up straight away so I drove it down the road and into the garage.

    Lee,

Was a bit gutted to say the least - but that's the risk you take ..........

I was in the 'open' category cos I run a Pinto with a 205 block, type 9 5 speed and cossy rear callipers - none of these are allowed in the historics.

They'll be tons of Escorts in Sherwood Pines on 10th/11th March on the http://www.robinhoodforeststages.co.uk/ rally mate - that's the next local one I think.

I'm from Pinxton by the way - not a million miles from you

    Cheers

I'll let you into a secret why rally cars get arched .....

When they are rolled the wheels and arches keep the rest of the car off the floor ...

Andy, hard luck mate, but hey its all repairable and apparently you aint trying if you havnt rolled at least once

Ahh..didn't think of that maybe I'll put that forward to the MSA to see if they'll let us arch the road rally cars

    Cheers Gary.

I think you are definitely right about the arches - I've seen some arched cars which have been in far worse rolls than mine was and come out with hardly any damage to the 'standard' bodywork.

    Hi Andy,

Didn't realise the accident had done quite that much damage!!

Don't worry though, it makes a much better story for down the pub that way, especially if you keep a couple of pics on you!!

yep most of it has pushed out, it'll need a bit of a skim in places but I've seen cars that haven't been in a bump that need that

I've set myself a target of finishing it for the end of May ......... I have to have something to aim at LOL

I wish someone had some pics of it leaning on the tree - there were some speecies taking photos of it but I didn't get the chance to speak to any of them.

It's been a while since I posted an update so here's some pics of what I've been up to. I saw Dan's update stripping the underside of his Mk1 so I thought I would have a go ......

The existing top coat and stoneguard was a sod to get off - ended up using a heat gun with various scrapers then thinners then a shit load of DA sanding disks

The inside was given similar treatment ......

First go with 2K paint for me - I like it!

Under bonnet area stripped, etched, primed and flatted

Plently more to do though ........

    More on my website http://www.escortsport.co.uk

    Cheers for that.

Some more progress over the last few days ..............

    Fitted some Tarmac arches

Put the roll cage back in (added a second diagonal to it before re-fitting) then spot welded the roof back on.

Not a bad few days work even if I do say so myself

A bit of an update. Engine bay, in boot and under wings and arches now all painted up!

Got a few days off work now so I'm hoping to get the rest primed up and flatted ready for top coat - if I get the DIY I've been told I've got to do finished that is
