    Re: import duty

The duty is payable on the total cost of the vehicle including shipping,Sometimes if the car seems overly cheap they'll charge it on what they think the car's worth!

    Re: import duty

That's not too bad.. We pay 60% tax for a used car, 100% for new cars but only 300% (yep, three hundred, not thirty) for luxurious, sport and super cars!

    Re: import duty

Its 10% Duty on the CIF price (cost insurance & freight) then vat @ 17.5% on the delivered price, i.e add together the CIF, Duty, clearance, terminals, lolo, documentation. devanning & Haulage etc etc etc them multiply by 17.5%

Thats for a used car too.

trouble with that is the sum of the parts can be worth more than the assembled car and you could still get hit with import duty, you might get away with the car tax but would it be enough to cover the cost of having the car taken apart in the US?

its gota be worth looking at doing! If I had the money, I'd buy a new mustang and import it, the money saved would compensate for what you would pay for one here.

    Re: import duty

The import duty is only reduced if the car is over 50 years old, I think it drops to 5%.

You can get a lower rate on newer cars if its of historical importance - but you have to ge this agreed with the customs people before the car is shipped. The thing is they very rarely agree to any car being of historical importance

I just found some old info I had on this.

If the car is over 50 yrs old its 0% duty and only 5% VAT , otherwise its 10% duty and 17.5% vat.

You need to get a classification code from Customs before the car is shipped. The code for 0% + 5% is 9705 and the 10%+ 17.5% is 8705

For more info ring Customs on 01702-366077
Be warned they are right snooty civil servant jobs worths , sitting back waiting to collect their gold plated pensions.

Chapter 97 in the tariff is for works of art and collector pieces. Not used cars.

I think you may have a problem with customs if you clarify it as 9705000090 I wouldn't be putting my name on the entry and by the looks of the restrictions you would need a surveillance certificate from origin to prove its status.

Hi Kieron - nothing would suprise me me with C&E.

The woman I spoke to was a right prat.

I asked her to define "of historical importance" and she struggled.

The best answer she could give was "well if its of high value"

I said this sounded like BS , because just cause something is of high value doesn't make it of historical importance - ie take a new ferrari for example.

We went round and round for ages and in the end she put the phone down!!

    Re: import duty

The car should have historic tags on it in america, because its over 25 yrs old. The shippers should see this from the Title (registration V5).
Get the seller in the US to give you a signed & notorized bill of sale for the car at a stupidly low price, like 500 bucks and this is the agreed value of the car, (Legally).
Therefore you pay duty based on the price its worth.

The only thing with that is you have to go to the US and sign & do the paper work yourself.

Have the import fees increased in the last couple of years or are they more or less the same?
