we actually traded places a couple of times early on, im pretty sure the lap you were ahead over the line was the lap i had a huge moment on phil ushers oil, because both you nigel passed me, im pretty sure i got you back on the next lap on the way into druids, only to nigel spin out in front of me on yet more oil, maybe you tyres are so sticky they didnt notice it was oily all the way from druids to surtiees
Report Sunday 31st May;the day started well at scrutineering as the car was scrutineered by a nice young lady who apart from being worried about the lack of support for my balls because I only use a four point harness passed the car and gave me my sticker.
Qualifying started with me driving slowly for a few laps in an attempt to scrub in the 2 new tyres that were fitted to the nearside and then going for a quick time after that only to find that the mysterious fuel starvation/misfire problem that the car's suffered from on/off for a while reappeared so I pulled in after only doing 10 laps and setting a best time of 57.478 which was good enough for 23rd overall (of 27) and 2nd in class D. The race came and I made sure that I kept up with the pack and watched the lights (cant usually see them with 32+ starters) on the rolling start as the lights went out I went for it getting to the outside by the 1st corner and passing several cars only to be out-dragged up the hill into the hairpin by the more powerful cars ahead,I didn't give up and drove around the outside of them (including Graham I think) again and got to the next corner ahead only to be out dragged again (well I do drive the lowest powered car in the championship) spent a good few laps trying to get past the silver x packed escort(2.2 pinto) that was trying to get past graham with me even having to take to the grass along cooper straight whilst trying to pass both of them at once,Nigel got past G soon after but the next time we went down the hill after druids he (N) spun out infront of G which gave me the chance to get alongside coming onto Cooper straight only to have to give way as I was in the wrong place for the next corner where I again got alongside (maybe infront of) G coming onto the start finish straight where he out powered me but I kept in touch getting alonside a couple more times until G had a moment after hitting the oil left by Phil Ushers Escort when it's oil filter exploded,I got on his bootlid along the start finish and passed him into Paddock hill and managed to make it stick for nearly two laps until the engine went sickI eventually finished 19th and last Fastest lap I did was 56.575.
That was race one........Race twos' report will follow

Think I've finally got to the bottom of the fuel starvation problems.... I cut the fuel tank open to remove the foam and relocate the pick up only to find that A: the existing pickup is about 10mm from the bottom of the tank,B: it's right above a pressed swage that's approx 3-4mm high. C:it had been fitted after the foam and where it had been welded the foam had melted a stuck to the bottom of the tank around the end of the pick up!
The tank is with my alloy fabricator who is repositioning the pick up so that it runs along the bottom of the tank and collects fuel from the area where it's most likely to be when cornering and accelerating. Fingers crossed it works.

one of those should cure the problem!think the foam melting around the end would be the biggest issue! hope the whole thing gets sorted for you now
do ya like dags
I have just had a tank made by Brise and they create a small well in the centre of the bottom of the tank and the fuel is picked up from there. The idea being when the fuel get low the well will alway have fuel in it.
Thanks Stu,Ken my tank is mounted on the boot floor which is almost flat so a sumped tank would have to be mounted higher which I'd rather not do,the tank that I've got is a pro made one from a well known company so I was suprised to say the least at what I found when I opened it up! Hopefully it will now be sorted
A mate of mine had a similar problem with the foam in his tank, half of it fell apart and the other half glued itself to the inlet
maybe its a shelf life thing as his was a few years old?
Get the guy to put a thin plate all the way across the bottom 1" above the base.. one 2" hole in the right in the middle and the pick up sits through the plate at some point .. in a corner the fuel cant come out the 2" hole so the pick up always has fuel

It would seem my computer skills are not good enough !!
thanks Guys !
Got up at 7am this morning with a not very nice feeling in my guts and a cold clammy feeling head went to the toilet several times (diahorrea) felt a little bit better so headed off to Lydden got part way there and started throwing upas I was driving along the M25!! Managed to get to the services at Clacket Lane and clean myself up and drunk a bottle of water which I then threw up again after being at the services for about 1/2 an hour I had another bout of diahorrea and being sick again still feeling clammy and dizzy I decided to call it a day and ended up driving slowy home I've been in bed for most of the day and have still got to unload the car off of the trailer.
I'm very disapointed because after the last meeting I was 7th overall in the championship and 2nd in class to Bill Richards who was only 3 points infront! (didn't expect to beat him but who knows)
Infact I am now so PISSED OFF I'm now thinking of stopping racing altogether and selling the car!
Sorry to hear that Nick, I had the same thing recently. not nice!!
Keep at it, just a bad day..
Classes D and E are well depleted at the moment we need the escorts and minis back

Next race is in two weeks at Brands, on the GP circuit, part of which I've never even seen let alone driven on.
At least the car's not had to have any work
And I will be there
I am entered in the Silverstone Classic on 24th and 25th July, as the Brands event is the following weekend I wont make it. I will be back for the other DMN rounds all being well. Have a good weekend all. Keep at it Nick you are going well.
Good luck Nick, sadly i wont be racing i think its a bit long for the nova and i am going to try to get a bit more development work done before i race next.
its not that much faster than the indy circuit, and with a new car the best devlopent you can do is drive it!i think its a bit long for the nova and i am going to try to get a bit more development work done before i race next.
The misfire problem is now solved I just had to take the gearbox out, replace a gasket to cure the oil leak and then put the 'box back in between races. The 2nd race was interesting on my hand cut slicks (last years drys) but as least the wiper waited until I was in the paddock to fall off
Well done Nick, I didn't see much of you on the day apart from early in race one when I was following in your smoke

Like it,thanks DW
I've now entered for Thruxton next saturday (15th Aug),as it's the fastest circuit in the country I'm thinking of going down the Top gear transit route of aerodynamics and tape all of the appertures (that aren't needed for cooling) and gutters to try and make better airflow.
I just hope the tyres don't burst
how did that weekend go nick ??
Restoration Wendy
nick had a couple of good finishes which have shot him well up in the championship standings

Just given the car a quick check over and changed the diff ready for tomorrow, while I was at it I checked the ignition timing as It hasn't been checked since before the rolling road shoot out at HTs I usually run it at 28degrees max advance but when I checked it it was set at 24degrees.This was last done by my rolling road operator ( who only advanced it)so I'm thinking that it may explain the lowish figures on hts rollers.
Guess I'll find out how much difference it's made (if any) in qualifying
Well done yesterday Nick, you car was flying and looked well hooked up. You was unlucky with the dnf in race one but at least you got a 2nd in race 2 after starting at the back
