MY MK1 ESCORT (Now turbo'd)
Well after a while here we go. I have finally got the car back from oddy at south west restos This was down to me being busy and it being a 400 mile round trip but yesterday it came back home with new wings full length strut tops front panel and a couple of other bits.
I m well chuffed with it. The next plans is to get the engine bay stripped some drilled holes filled and get it in primer for a trial fitting as there some things i would like to do again in particular the brake pots. Who makes a decent bracket for 3 ap pots?
Hi Dave,
Glad you got home ok and thanks for trusting me with it, look forward to the updates,
Cheers,
James
Well finally got into gear. Been messing around with my bias pedal box and the pots. Never been happy with the holes and brackets i made up. So filled them up with some small round plates, luckily they were roughly the size of a 10 p coin. Mounted the pots on the other side of the bulkhead now and will run the pipes to the cylinders under the bulkhead. To level the pots i have put a small bed of weld on one side which tilts the put level when tightened.
Cut out the new top panel !!! To fit the rad back in needs a bit of fine tuning but getting there. Once all the cutting and grinding has been done will paint strip the whole bay ready for priming and painting etc.ImageUploadedByTapatalk1355663978.047388.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1355664009.712023.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1355664021.399963.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1355664046.140441.jpg
Nice to see a bit of progress

And other junk I don't like to talk about!
well 5 year break and mojo has come back. I have been gathering bits all time whilst getting with life and making progress on the anglia which is now been running for a couple of years. The car was complete and running when i pulled it apart to get the wing tops replaced etc and been sitting there ever since.
I have started stripping the engine bay ready for painting but before that i plan to fit an auto tunnel which i have in stock ready. hopefully a lot will go back reasonably easy as it all came out of the car. Most progress will be painting and cleaning things and painting then the pinto will go back in but do fancy a duratec but that may have to wait for more money.

well... you've had 3 days it should be nearly finished now
Ok so been busy stripping off all the paint and priming. This highlighted the many factory and non factory holes which I have been busy welding up.
Also made a start on the automatic gearbox tunnel[/IMG]

Took some ideas from Eric’s duratec build which has been a great inspiration to crack on with this. Thanks Eric
Also made up some brackets to mount the fan as I was never happy with ties that go through the matrix.
These are now black now.
Finally ended up at this
Have also been busy painting various bits in between ready for reassembly.
Ready to collect some 2k rattle cans this week and hopefully a green engine bay at the weekend.

so got 2 cans of 2k modena green and painted the lower half of the engine bay. Looked great if a little dark. But who knows what a 40 year old car colour is. Picked up a third can and this turned out to be the correct colour and a 2 tone engine bay
A week later after working away and a chat with the paint supplier they supplied some more paint FOC and we ended up with this. it's not concours but more than happy with how it has turned out.
so started adding some parts. It's all going great as the car has been together already so just a bit of cleaning and painting of bits as they have been hanging around the garage a long while.
Wow, thats some skill with a rattle can, looks really good
I think the credit should go to the 2k paint really it seems to really cover and and get a lovely gloss. Not like the old Dupli-color cans
Nice to see you got your" mojo " back....cracking on...looks well good,...cheers mark
you are quite correct
after a bit of research and advice and also not wanting to die i ended up like this.
I also used rubber surgery gloves as you also get paint on your fingers when spraying. The mask was specific for 2k paint and has replaceable filters. The car is also in door of the garage so plenty of ventilation. It was worth the effort in the end as the mist gets all over you. I probably spent more on safety than actual paint.

Definitely worth the precautions. It's nasty stuff.
So working away from home progress has slowed a bit. At least it gives you a chance to plan and purchase bits. Managed to get enough done to make an update and get back to page 1.
the new shelf had to work around the pipes from the brake reservoirs as can be seen. The runs these take a few ups and downs so i am not getting fluid to the cylinders very well. To rectify this and tidy them out of the way some 90deg fittings are on order at a shocking £20 each but it should make everything neater and run the pipes more direct.
The power and relays are all tested so once the pipes are sorted i can fit the ecu shelf fully. then just the final connections in the engine bay. Mounted the coil pack and also made custom length HT leads which will fit through the inlet and over the cam cover.
Coming to fit the rad the fan now longer fits so i had to re-mount in front of the rad, it was always close but i think it was due to the raising the engine at the rear with the new larger tunnel.

Nice to see some progress on this. Keep it going . Will love to see it finished. No more 5 year breaks .
the plan was to have it running for the summer but work has sidelined that a bit.
Can't believe i started this as quick project 10 years ago.
In reality shouldn't be long now maybe 2-3 years
Good job with the paint suit. Skin is the biggest organ.. Watch those filters they have a shelf life from when they are exposed to air. I think you can store them in an air tight container.
For painting the 2k stuff I have a little machine called a Hobby Air, feeds cool fresh air from 30ft away, punched a hole into the wall and set it on the other side
10 years lol ,at least it’s gone up in value without touching it

Lazy Sunday so i thought an update was in order. It has just been a list of little jobs that adds up to a bigger picture. A lot of what i have done is just putting back what was there before it went for inner/outer wings. Trouble is whilst you do this you try to improve and neaten as you go along.
Also as bargains come your plan changes.
The car now is running 15 inch compomotive ML rims as they turned up at a price with tyres cheaper than i could buy tyres for my 13in rims and i have to restore them yet. These needed arch adjustment and i also had to convert some mk2 single leaf springs that i had lying around, without these it was like a 70's street rod. This will be improved soon when funds allow as i have a shortened atlas with 18t shafts to fit which will give 1/2 inch more clearance each side just need a LSD to be fitted etc. This will also mean a change to rear disc's.
I also manged to bag a bolt in cage but this will need to be a 2 man install i think so that will come shortly.
Current plan is MOT and try and get a 1/2 decent map on megasquirt. Body work / paint is probably next then as i know the rear arches need to be re-done as my brother-in-law when he replaced them just went over the top of the old ones (best to coincide this with the atlas) then finally to go to Duratec as money allows.

Looks mint
Good progress
Where was your tunnel from?
Hexham and District Motorclub
It's a Magnum auto tunnel from TJ Motorsport. A site sponsor
Thanks looks good quality
Hexham and District Motorclub
It was a pretty good fit and looks a lot nicer than some of the tunnels on the market. TBH some of the rally companies could be a bit more imaginative than just folding a square box.
A few weeks managed to pick up a roll cage. It's a bit of a mystery coming out of a LHD RS2000. It seems pretty good and is a 6 point bolt in but sits on platforms which i now need to make. You can see it hovering in the car. It is more for looks than being approved for use etc at the price i couldn't not have it
Whilst i was at it i was always a bit unhappy about my home brew petrol tank feed so decided to bling it up a bit. A new 8mm pipe was soldered into the original fitting. this allowed a hard line to an 6 fitting to be connected and then a right angle joint. Fitting the filter with an adapter and a straight fitting. The hose is black braided PTFE.

cage is odd, i take it your using the car for street use only? as the cage would not be legal for MSA motorsport
It seems really well made but yes no illusions of passing scrutineering or anything. I can only imagine it is of foreign manufacture as it came from a LHD car ?
Seems strange to be bolt in but needing platforms like a weld in cage.

to me whats more strange is the back stays are not welded to the main hoop, effectively you have a pivot in the whats possibly one of the places to have one
What would be the recommended thickness of steel to make the platforms out of. I was thinking 3mm.
👍

msa approved cages would be 3mm minimum
So a quick update. A couple of years ago i bought a shortened atlas case and 18t quaife halfshafts from GavinR (thanks). This is 47.5 inch so good for 7 inch rims, fast forward 12 months from that i managed to bag a set of 7 x 15" compomotive ML's which did fit with the english axle but the arches a very tight even with a bit of adjustment on the arches. So time to activate project atlas.
I have been collecting the parts for this for a while as remember this was a bare casing. So i have a 3.75 cwp and finally a second hand 18t 3j diff came up for sale.
I had to change the rear caliper brackets as these were for xr3i front calipers. I will be using sierra rears.
The casing has just come back from RACE (squires brothers) i can only say what a great job they did in assembling all my parts etc including new bearings, cwp bolts, drive flange bolt and even lock wiring the bearing caps. I also got a second hand brace from them.
If they don't have what you need for an escort then you probably don't need it.
This is now up to date so i need to paint and fit up all my bits before i can install on the car.
I will add more pics as i go along
