    MK1 turbo pinto

Been working away on the axle. I will be running this axle on single leafs and tramp bars. My car has the early type sub frame for the shocks. This means it runs straight tramp bars. Not according to plan these sit exactly where the 4 link mounts on the casing so off with these and the coilover mounts sit exactly where the leaf spring bolts pass over the axle so they had to go as well.

Now for the fun stuff of fitting up the bits

    Re: MK1 turbo pinto

Wow where did 12 months go !!
Time for the next stage then. The pinto has run with injection on an emerlad ecu and atlas axle etc. The end goal was to replace this with a duratec. I had engineered everything to fall into place as i went along to the point of using duratec injectors in the pinto inlet so the plugs are ready to go etc. I will be going coil on plug though not using the coil pack so that bit will change.

So i managed to sell the pinto and gearbox which has given me the final funds for the throttle bodies so i hopefully won't end up with an unfinished project.

Today Retroford delivered me a cross member, mounts, water rail and sump for part one of the install. I ordered this lot yesterday and they arrived today and they do look good.

hopefully i will document this a little better with all my pitfalls

    Re: MK1 turbo pinto

progress is moving along i have a spare dummy engine so i droped that in for now for fitment checking

Gearbox fits a treat all i needed to do is remove a couple of casting lugs and move the gear lever cover forward an inch. I have a capri gearbox to fit the auto tunnel and a little modding should also get this to work quite easily.

Also go an oil pump take off plate which is needed with the world cup cross member. As usual it doesn't fit. That's no reflection on Danst supplying a really nice bit of kit, i just hoped it would. With a bit of engineering mods i think i can get it to fit.

    Re: MK1 turbo pinto

So progress goes on but i keep hitting brickwalls. The oil filter is fitted on a bracket under the throttle bodies and connected on an -10 hose back to the block plate. To get this to fit with the retroford engine mounts i had to to slice 10mm off the face and a bit of filing and trimming it fits. This is ok as the plate is 30mm to start with.

The thing that has caused the most grief is the retroford water rail. Firstly it won't fit with the heater pipes so i had to cut these back just to get it to fit . This isn't really pointed out on the web site this is required until you discover they make a heater matrix with shorter pipes. To fit it back on after you need to drop the engine to get clearance to the bolts.
I have now come to try and fit the temp sensor connector to the ecu and this is all but impossible. The closest i got was under the gearbox with my hands over the top of the bellhousing and i am not convinced the length of the connector with its rubber boot on will even fit and still have the temp gauge wire to connect as well. If you know this beforehand it would be easier to make some extensions you can connect at the side of the engine as once connected it may be an issue getting the engine out with it on. The only we i can see round this is to drop the engine again to get an extension fitted.

The next main thing is the gearbox mount i have a cunning plan with a tca inner bush. we will see how that works out.

think I may have got the air horns slightly too long

    Re: MK1 turbo pinto

A quick update, progress has moved forward but as usual 3 steps forward 2 back. I have been trying to do this in stages so i don't lose focus. First on the list was the fuel system. After plumbing all up i pressure tested it which resulted in fuel everywhere which i spotted to be a split "O" ring on the top of injector 4 which to be fair was the first one i fitted so probably need to take the blame on that. The cheap ebay regulator
also leaked, i think that is down to the grub screw that blanks off the pressure gauge. I now have the gauge in which is 1/8npt so ithink that will stop that and new 1/8 npt blank. Not sure a grub screw was up the job at least without some sealer.

Bolting up the throttle bodies the 2nd bolt on the lower part of the manifold was just slack. So it seemed sensible to remove the throttle bodies do the injector and heli-coil the stripped thread (not by me this time read on) whilst waiting the heli-coil kit I inspected the thread further and it had never been threaded ! not sure how the original plastic intake bolts up but an 8mm tap and job fixed, heli-coil kit turned up today always handy to have with an alloy head i suppose.

Next was cooling i have decided to try the pretty much brand new rad (recored) back to front in flow as the duractec works opposite way to the pinto i have removed. Moving outlets etc may have been possible or not. 2 x 90 deg bends and an alloy joiner fitted with a 1/8 npt boss for an accurate temp gauge later and one side done the old inlet now "outlet" worked out well with a trimmed 90 deg and a 135 degree hose and a joiner job done again with some heavy duty clamps.

This "cooling" stage has also now highlighted that i need to join the water rail to a bypass on top of the thermostat to allow even warm up which is handy as the throttle bodies are still off. Once again the retroford rail is such a tight fit i can get a hose on it but no way of getting clamp on and tightened so for the 3rd time i am having to drop the engine a bit or a lot so i can get enough room to get in and sort it. To be honest i did think about doing this before it went back in last time but decided to just ablank it off hindsight is a great thing. It does show you that the water rail is a such a tight fit it is not "go back to item" once installed. So the engine is ready to be dropped again when the 90 degree elbow turns up. I might also trim some awkward lumps off the head in that area to give me a bit better room for the hose.

After all this i am glad i haven't got an exhaust on yet ! That's looming.

    Re: MK1 turbo pinto

LOL's reading that whilst nodding my head sagely! I experienced pretty much all the same things whilst building up my Zetec! I started with a Raceline water rail that was fitted to the engine outside the bay, once dropped in and a few months later I found I couldn't fit the Retroford exh. manifold! To achieve that I had to take the head off, position the manifold and put the head back. Slow forward a couple of years and about ready to start so went to spin over with plugs out and clatter, clatter - hmmm doesn't sound right! Seems the cam timing went back on wrong - 3No headless valves, dented cyl. head and pistons - DAMN! So head off again to be replaced with a refurbed one and also decides to swap out the Raceline water rail for a Retroford one. Its in two parts and the inaccessible bit was fitted to head before fitting, senders for the ecu and gauge fitted but no easy to get to after fitting near bulkhead. Head fitted and plumbing rearranged to suit new water rail but I kept getting coolant leaks from above the bellhousing! ! ! Turns out RF use a case 16mm outlet pre thermostat to connect to the heater and will sell you a lovely piece of silicon @ £40+ sized exactly to fit one to the other. Due to the limited space as noted in above post my cobbled together mixture of hose, bends and joiners meant I had 3 pieces of rubber, 2 joiners and 4 or 5 jubilee clips - only half of which could be tightened properly and straight. The Raceline set-up was sooooo much easier! I gave up and sacrificed the heater and ran a singlr hose from stat outlet down to pump - yey! no leaks! So - yeah I feel yer pain!

    Re: MK1 turbo pinto

Thanks Katana. TBH moving the whole engine forward by 5mm would solve all sorts of issues with the water rail and also the fuel rail being extremely tight. I quite enjoy the challenge but to have to drop the engine for minor stuff annoys me a bit (although i am quite slick at it now) as you say 1 water leak on a clip and it is a whole pile of work. Like most on here i have to do everything myself so anything i can do to make the process easier i try to. So the things on the water rail will be on my list of "improvements".

Now you mention the exhaust that worries me as on my lotus anglia i have take off the carbs and the engine mounts and move the engine to get the manifold on and off. Hope thats not yet to come on this "joy".

    Re: MK1 turbo pinto

    happy christmas to me !!!

My mx5 to atlas prop turned up. I picked dave mac as i googled around randomly and they actually make these for the kit car guys. I also watch a youtube series from "driftworks" (been good for covvid lock down) who have built some nice cars and they also used him so that was sealed. So a quick set of e-mails and we confirmed what i have and i found out whilst googling. The service i got from dave mac props was brilliant and turned up exactly on the day promised well packed

I have the n7 5 speed gearbox which is a smaller 22 spline the same as earlier mx5's. For those that have the 6 speed that seems to be the same larger spline as the RX 8 6 speed as it seems they essentially the same gearbox so i suspect you can use the carbon prop as well with mods. I have an auto tunnel in my car and the 5 speed is tight in places so i doubt the 6 speed will fit easily without an even bigger tunnel, i used to have a 6 speed rx8 box (never fitted ) and they are a big old lump, i would think they are bigger than T5.

All the parts i have used are mx5 flywheel and clutch starter etc so hopefully work fine initial test seems to show it works with the escort master cylinder and the starter spins the engine over. The only down side is the mx5 uses the engine on a tilt so the gearbox accounts for this. In the escort the engine sits straight so this tilts the gearbox you do notice the angle of the gearstick but it doesn't seem to be awkward to use and has a real nice shift.
