XFlow with Davies Craig Electric Water Pump

Today I started work on fitting a Davies Craig electric water pump to my XFlow turbo. I recently installed a Revotec electric radiator fan and found it to be too tight of a fit with the OE water pump. Others may not run into this issue as the fan I used had to be of a 'suck' type and mounted inside the engine bay as I have a small intercooler mounted in the front panel in front of the radiator.

So I ordered today the small EWP80 pump as its suitable for up to around 2 litre engines with mine being a 1.3 pumping out ~110 BHP, plus it can be fitted inline with the pipes as its small and light enough (doesn't require a mounting bracket unlike the larger pumps). I also ordered an extra right angle adapter as when I was eye balling the pump position taking into account how I'd do the piping, figured it might fit best using two right angle adapters.

I intend to fit the pump towards the front of the engine bay near the floor, ideally so the pump inlet is close to the radiator outlet, with the pump outlet pointing towards the OE water pump inlet. After some scavenging today I found an old water pump which I will strip and use as an adapter rather than faffing with trying to fabricate something new. To clarify the old pump won't actually function, but solely act as a coolant inlet into the block, none of the internals will be present and the shaft will be cut off and welded up.

Here are some photos I took today when I was stripping down the old pump. The new electric pump is due to arrive tomorrow so will post some more progress if I find time.

The pump arrived today and I found some more time to faff around with modding the OE water pump.

Loads of room for the water pump now there is no shaft contacting the fan.

Rough placement of the electric pump. It is much heavier than I thought it would be so may end up making a bracket to support the weight, especially when the pipes are also full with coolant.

Work has resumed after a 'brief' break.

Some pics of the modded water pump after being welded up along with a bit of a polish.

I'm tempted to get the Dremel inside the central chamber to reduce the lip leading to outlet, it looks quite restricting but not sure if it would have a big affect on flow considering this is how it was originally.

re mounting of pump, ive used loads on race cars over the years, i only ever mounted them via the hoses never had an issue.

nice job on blanking the pump, although a core plug in the hole would of done the job too. theres probably no point in modifying whats left of the pump internals, that bit wont be teh biggest flow restriction anyway ( just look at the thermostat) strange as it may seem you dont want the coolant flowing around at a million miles an hour

I've had the pump held in place with the pipes connected and it does seem pretty solid from movement.

I guess you could use core plugs. In my case I didn't have any spare plugs of the right size and it was easier/quicker to get it welded. Also little chance of the weld failing compared to a plug.

    Makes sense, thanks for clarifying.

I have cut all the silicon pipes to size and have had the pump mounted in place. I'll post some pics of later when the pump is next in the vehicle.

Is it just me thinking , why not put that crusty old water pump out in the bin for bin men next wednesday !

Buy a new one for £ very little, bolt it on for another 10,000 miles no phaf, no plumbing, just a plain and simple job that has worked for years.

I would but the original water pump wouldn't fit with the electric radiator fan I have in place as they contact each other, and I can't move that easily to the front of the radiator as I have an intercooler there.
