    Gearbox options for 1700xflow

Hello guys just looking for advice. I have since had a change of direction with the project and ended up purchasing a 2 door shell. The car it's a early 1300gt G reg and has had the following mods: steel bubble arches, some type 49 strengthing as well as a stone guard. The car has also had fitted a really wide group 4 gearbox tunnel. In my original project purchased a Mexico 4 speed and was going to leave it standard as I wanted to fit an original centre console an carpet. But since I've got a shell with the alll the hard work done what's the best gearbox to invest in ? I don't really mind about the cost I just want to know what you guys would recommend Thanks in advance

    Re: Gearbox options for 1700xflow

If you're not running huge power there are a few options:

    RS 4 speed
    2000E 4 speed
Type 9 if you need the extra cruising gear.

Elite do a nice 6 spd sequential if your budget'll stretch, if not a type 9 will do the job.

Worth getting the long first type 9 from first motion/spc/bgh etc. as the gap between 1st and 2nd on the stock is not nice (need to rev the nuts of it and then bogs down).

Caterham do a 6 speed box that fits a type 9 bolt pattern (occasionally come up on eBay) very close ratio with 1:1 6th gear so probably need a 3.54 rear diff.

Mazda 6 speed? There is a very informative thread about this reasonably cheap conversion. http://www.turbosport.co.uk/showthre...ighlight=mazda

i got the 2000e 3 rail gearbox. nice and smooth, but if you use it regularly(especially on highway) you really need the 5 speed

    Re: Gearbox options for 1700xflow

Thanks for the replays everyone I think I will go along a Ford gearbox route the only thing that's putting me off the Mazda box it the work that's required to getting it fitted and I think I'd rather spend the time else where on the car. Plus the Speedo would be a niggly issue for me as I want the standard Speedo to work in the car.

Any particular type 9 box I should look out for ratios .
I head someone say about gearstick throw and position
So a type 9 5 speed what do I need for a conversation ? At moment I have a standard English Axle with a unknown diff ratio but It came from a st 1300xl

Just looking here what do I want I'm not going rallying I just want a good strong road car I'm only running 120hp xflow so I want a box to suit
That's good for long distance driving to shows ect so lots of motorway miles so something with a low revs 5th a good all rounder ,

    Re: Gearbox options for 1700xflow

There are basically 2 varieties of type 9 - those fitted to 4 cylinder cars - these have short nose input shaft, exactly the same ratio's as a 4 speed box + overdrive 5th and those fitted to V6 motors which have long nose input shafts, a slightly taller 1st gear with other ratio's the same as other T9's.
You either space the box back from the BH or shorten the nose on the long nose V6 boxes to fit 4 banger engines.
With a 1300 axle you are liable to have a 3.9 or 4.1 diff? so any box will suit if buying S/H, but if going to one of those listed above, the Base Road one would be fine as it has the raised 1st (higher than std. V6 box) which is nicer to have/drive and the overdrive 5th will be quite usable with the diff and little extra power you have.
If you get a s/h box the raised 1st can be fitted DIY for about £250 if done during a refurb strip. This is the route I took with my RS as i'd forgotten how stupidly low 1st was (unless towing a caravan everywhere! LOL)

    Re: Gearbox options for 1700xflow

Gearstick is further back on type 9 compared to 4speed and may hit handbrake lever in 2nd and/or 4th. (Quick shift sorts this one)
On v6 box I put two 10mm spacers between box and bell housing(alloy rs type) and still had to cut a small piece off end of input shaft.
You'll have to make a mount yourself or retro Ford do a universal one which looks like a good piece of kit. Although you may be lucky and someone has already had one fitted to that shell that works with type9.
for what it's worth and in case anyone doesn't know- the tunnel mounts in an auto shell line up exactly with a type 9 rubber mount and the auto gearbox crossmember.
Apart from the Speedo problem I wouldn't overlook the 231 Mazda rx8 box. It's cheaper and readily available and with one of freddies adapter plates it's a doddle to fit in a larger tunnel. It's what I'm using now although it's not on the road yet so can't comment on real world experiences!
    good luck

    Re: Gearbox options for 1700xflow

theres only one sensible option really thats a Type 9 5 speed its just the ratio,s you choose and where you buy it from,so i would go to BGH and choose the Mexico ones as it will best suit you engine. It will fit properly and most importantly the clutch selection is easy and will work, All these things down to the speedo drive are worth considering. With that box you get close ratio that is good upto 250 hp with a 5th gear and they take some shit when needed and plod round when wanted.

point taken from above,i had to move my gear stick hole back and get a new prop but no bigy. If you cut the hole it just turns round into the right position.it did not hit my hand brake.not just the hole ha ha.

ive looked and there is a solution that the Americans use you can covert the electronic speedo to cable drive with a box they developed its alot of money though nearly 250 quid shipped from the states but comes with the ford type speedo drive.

Rx8 6speed boxes don't have any type of speedo drive electronic or geared :-) speedo drive is from abs sensor
I've used gps speedo instead if that info is any use :-)

What ratio do you call a long first? It also depends on the size of your wheels and tyres and their rolling radius. If you do a bit of homework there are formulas to work the calculations out with different diff ratios and gears.

I'm guessing the 3.54 diff is going to be the most expensive rs2000 diff but it's the best of the bunch how much would it usually fetch nothing on the bay so must be thin on the ground

£300 seems the norm for a 3.54 when they turn up, that could be hopeful but supply and demand i suppose.

3.54 is actually one of the cheapest and less sought after, i see them from £100.

How many do you want? i know where there is about 6 of them, 3.54 is usually regarded for most builds, aint much use to anyone, even for the road most favour 3.89 or 3.7

    Re: Gearbox options for 1700xflow

i changed to a 5 speed as i was doing show and events and was on the motorway a lot so the 5th gear really helps. however i am racing this year so have to go back to the 4 speed. so there is a type 9 in the for sale section not sure what the ratios are though.

short nose 5 speed box ratio's are the same as a std RS / Sport 4 speed - 5th is an overdrive. So go racing - just don't use 5th!
The long nose V6 box ratios are slightly different but 4th is still 1:1
