This is a picture taken at Goodwood race circuit in the seventies.
Pictured is Mike Davidson who was my father's driver for 25 or more years.
He drove with intense ferocity!
The picture sums up old skool rallying, when the cars were exciting to watch; as spectacular as a WRC car is for its technology and poise, nothing substitutes the cars from the sixties era right up to the group-b cars of the early and mid-eighties.
Anyway, i though it might be of some interest.

i used to go spectating regularly in the early eighties. every 3rd car along was like that, and appeared an accident in waiting. the end for me was typified by what was then i think called the "nova challenge" ? like watching clockwork toys in comparison.
it was taken from the wall of my uncle Mike's workshop as he cleared it out. he is retiring and i took it from his wall and had it enhanced by a local firm.
there may be some more knocking aorund, will have to root through dads archives.

he and my father rallied all over the uk and also in belguim, they achieved a great many victories and top 5/10 finishes.
there best result in Belguim was 5th on the Rallye Du Condroz. they competed in Spain during the oil crisis, with there friends the Faulkners; they were a rich fmaily with Lord Faulkner and the head of proceedings. incidentlly their service barge was a Rolls Royce from which champagne was dispensed with impuntiy!
lots of anecdotes like that - thos were the days eh?!
i think the era of rallying back then saw the best of it.

A fantastically interesting photo, taken in an age when many circuits were just disused WW11 airfields with no real safety precautions in place. Not only did the drivers have to master the uneven tarmac but also keep the statiegically placed spectators in mind.

Nige S - i do concur with you. it is an epitomy of the era, which is why i was so compelled ot put it up. i though that it was largely representative of the time as you mentioned and went further than merely my own sentiments, having a broader appeal for those who get hairs on the back of their neck just hearing a BDA ticking over! the photo has such energy and is spot on IMO.

This is a friend of theirs Paul Faulkner in action on the 1973 Firestone rally in Spain; they pissed off down there to go rallying as the fuel crisis was on, but the spanish took no notice.

Great pics, wish my old man was into rallying, the only pics of him in a mk2 was on our drive in his brown estate when he bought it in 1980.
My mates dad used to road rally in the late 70's early 80's and has some cracking pics, i'll see if i can get some off him.

Looks like he has chopped the corners off some 1/4 bumpers and welded the straight bits to the sides of the rear! Guess he had a habit of slinging it sideways into trees and bushes??

Nice pics (but presumably you mean a Grp 2 car rather than Grp 4). The old Mk 1s used to lift inside wheels on tarmac particularly in forest set up.
Paul Falkner - he used to rally "43 FOR" didn't he.
Not sur eon the number for Paul's car, but i believe he is president of the southsea motorclub now, so whilst not rallying is still in circulation.
the car was grp 4 i think in a forest spec, but i will ask for definite. i will be bumping into Uncle Mike later, so shall confirm what the set-up was.

Interestingly theres a picture of my dad in his mk1 out on the Nant yr Hwch stages at home, not sure what year. Will get it scanned and will put it up. If i work out how to put piccies on tinterweb!

He was sponsoring the event so he went out in one of those new-fangled 2.8inj Capris for a laugh...they'd only just been launched and the car was brand new!! The mechs fitted AP forest calipers, sump guard, LSD, and a pair of Super Oscars....off to go.
