Re: Some pics of todays work

The clamps did work perfect, really simple and more then strong enough.

both doors are bonded now. Only thing left is to dress the flanges

Onto the crossmembe tubes. Did some measuring

I wanted to make sure the measurements were correct, so put a red dot on a bolt

Red dot aligns perfect with pilot hole

16mm holes drilles and tubes test fitted. If anyone tries drilling these holes, please make sure to hold a massive grip on the dril machine. It really tries to brake your wrist when your not paying attention !

crossmember test fitted, fits perfectly. Can't believe how glad i am to be bolting something to the car lol

Looking good, feels so much better when you get an engine back in the bay even if it is for a trial fit

Re: Some pics of todays work

Thanks for the comments guys ! I'm leaning towards plain white for the moment with some black striping; maybe some gold mini lites, but not too much people seem to share my opinion on that one :-)

Been a while since last update, but progress was made !

I bought new sparco evo L seats years ago, that need to get into the car. Been look into buy and bolt sets, but not too much luck. I'm quite tall, so i wanted to sit low and backwards to get a comfy position.

So decided to make my own seat brackets.

After many (and much more) mock ups and measuring, i fabbed some seat U brackets from 5mm steel.

i dont have a bending machine, but do own one hell of a car lift. So that will do :-)
There was quite some science into this, although it looks like whack and guess on the pic. But after bending, the bend with was 1.8mm wider then the bend line. So had to take that into mind when measuring

drilled some holes for adjustments and test fitted

my dad milled some slots so i could adjust the seat in all directions

One seat mount ready with support brackets and level

    powdercoated

and finally installed in the car !

    very happy with the outcome

Re: Some pics of todays work

    Thanks Matt and Mark !

Had a go at the gearbox mount. I wanted to use the standard Sierra mount with minimal adjustments.

After thinkering a lot, i guess i rotated the mount 180 degrees which looked like a easy way out.

    Made some strenghtening brackets

brackets welded in place. Welding under the car really is a pain in the arse !

And job done, gearbox mount in place

As a motivator, i reassembled the front of the car, which has a face again !

Re: Some pics of todays work

been a while since last update, little has been done to the car due to holiday and enjoying time with the family and friends

Managed to fill the rivets with Debrasel which worked excellent. I really like the look of edge of the arches on top of the body panels

made the new gear lever hole and dressed the welds

Re: Some pics of todays work

wow almost 2 months have passed ...

    Here's the latest :

started working on the 4 link kit. First welded the diamond brackets

Not that the welds were bad or ugly, but wanted to try to get an even nicer finish. Looks good, but not worth the time invested :-)

Measuring the centre line of the car

Measuring the centre line for the 4 link boxes

Cuts for the boxes outlined. I decided to put some flanges so didnt measure the complete width of the boxes. This turned out to work very nicely

First cut for the boxes and started working on the flanges

    Stich welded

Primered and second box ready for welding.

Meanwhile there was just no enough room for my feet to drive comfortable with the big gearbox tunnel. So i had to make some extra space. Should have checked this when welding the big tunnel..

Happy with the new space for my feet.

    Thats it for now !

This project is one of the best I have seen in a long time, attention to detail and explained very well. I am thinking of starting my own project in 2017 on a Ford Cortina P100 and after reading your post and the pictures gives a whole new meaning of car restorations. Tx brother.

Thumbs up Re: Some pics of todays work

Thx for the nice words. I make lots and lots of pics to record the resto. Seeing how expensive these toys are getting it's worth making a good resto documentation. Its also very rewarding when you share the progress and get feedback from your mates or on this forum.and it helps you getting motivated to continue the work.

Good luck with your resto and make sure you put it on turbosport!

What thickness of metal did you use for the gearbox mount spacers?....i used 1inch box section but it vibrates when it moves

Re: Some pics of todays work

    [QUOTE=filipvdv;2862357]Thanks again guys !

    Starter finished, revised and painted

Steering house got the usual treatment, clean, prime, check, paint

Doorskins removed because they were warped (brainless welding by somebody in the past-not me) way too much to repair and had some rot.

Inside of the doorskin, some rot, a hole and warpage

Cleaned the inside and repaired the edges where needed. also gave the edges anti-rust treatment

    Inside of doors epoxy primed

Doorskins themselves got epoxy primed, they are magnum skins

Next up is to mate the skin to the door frame again

If I may ask how did you get the door skin apart from the frame of the door.

you use a grinder and grind the edge of the door where the skin is folded over, once you have ground through the fold you can literally peel the outer skin off the door frame

i think i used 1cm thick material, but also made sure there the spacer was large enough to have some surface to take the punishment. I also used the original sierra mount without extending it as i sometimes see. I just turned it around (hope that works out !).

Like Graham said, its quite a simple process. I used a flap sanding wheel and started touching the folded area to slowly remove material.
If you look closely you can see a crack line appearing that indicates there is enough material removed from the outside. Some heat from the heat gun makes the glued areas come loose easily.

Cleaned up the welding for the gearbox tunnel on the underside of the car

Same treatment for the diff tunnel and the 4 link boxes

Next up the turrets, therefore the car was rotated so i can pull some plumb lines and measure easily

Hi guys, no updates because it's too busy life wise at the moment. I see the car daily when I park in my garage but unfortunately I don't have free time. Have all shiny new parts ready to bolt on... Very frustrating
