    Some pics of todays work

Beautiful weather over in Belgium, 25 degrees, so decided to give sandblasting a go.

Not quite convinced bout this blasting, dirty work, lots of cleaning afterwards, and seals dont blast off that easily.

Gonna finish the rest with the trusty grinder.

Here are some pics (check out the massive filler job ...)

Tomorrow i will put some primer on the underside. Still need to figure out the mixture of primer and hardener. No clue so far

Re: Some pics of todays work

Most 2k primers mix 4:1 primer to hardener, some mix 5:1 some even 3:1
It always tells you the mix on the back of the tin unless you are using crap primer then it might not

does anyone know the function of the little plates in the red circles ? I have some rust holes in them, so will need to repair it. Looks like some strengthening for the chassis rail ?

Re: Some pics of todays work

Nope the jacking points are in the front of the spring hanger you can just see them in the pic with the strengtheners that run out to the outer sill

It might be for when the cars in the mot/repair garage on a ramp though, dont know if those types of ramp were about when the escorts were born!?! But theres that section at the rear and at the front just where the front rail drops down and meets the centre section its double skinned too, maybe even triple skinned?

The section hes talking about is the bit that rots on most if not all mk1 & 2s, its the section where the centre rail and the rear rail join and overlap so is double skinned, water gets in between the skins and they rot to fook mine are gone and have been plated badly so im going to be doing them soon but i will probably just let in a single piece of thicker steel, its got to be stronger than whats on it at the moment which is literally a cover to please the mot man!

To repair yours, which dont look too bad, either weld up the holes or if its worse than it looks, start by chopping off the first outer skin and try to leave the one under in tact so you have something strong to weld to if its rust free, then just knock up a plate to fill the outer skin

Decided to work on the chassis rail today. Left and right showed rotten pieces, so the grinding starts.

The inner metal plate was also rusted, so had to replace that too. Both sides. Pretty satisfied with my work today, muuch better the sandblasting horror last weekend

Re: Some pics of todays work

Tought i would continue to put some pics here of my restauration. Hope the pics work, its a direct copy of my weblog. Looks good here.

I first cut out the gearlever hole because i want to re-use that

Then mark the new tunnel and mark a safety line a bit inwards. There i will cut the first big hole.

    Old versus new

    New tunnel tacked in place

Pretty good penetration of the weld. I will trim the rest of the chassis plate thats too much under the gearbox tunnel so we have a clean finish. But thats for later, after the welding is done.

Did some welding on the left and right side. Have to complete the welding in the top area of the tunnel, ooo leave the beast for last …

finished the welding of the gearbox tunnel.

Put some seam filler on it

Cleaned up the underside. Need to finish up the support brace.

Do i need to cut the red section out so i can fit the sierra gearbox ? I've seen several versions on this.

Mine fitted by cutting using the back of the oval cutout as a line.
Your red line is a little bit more than necessary going by how mine was.

Re: Some pics of todays work

Finished cleaning up the support brace following Dave_Robert’s tip. Tried tyding the seam filler but this is quite resistant stuff, so only gave it a little brush with the wire-brush.

Also applied a coating of primer for protection during the build up.

After all the work i wanted to clean my paint gun. so put in some paint cleaning stuff and wanted to start spraying the gun clean. Didnt screw on the lid… I took the paint gun of the work bench, but it was stuck. So i pulled harder, and here we go, the paint gun came loose, but the cleaning liquid (thinner) flew out of the paint gun reservoir, straight into my face and into my eye ! You should know, i’m also quite allergic to this stuff. I dropped all i had in my hands, sprinted into the house to find the bathroom. My eye was burning like hell ! Washed my face and eyes with lots and lots of water. Then hit the shower immediately to scrob it all off again. Put on some burning cream, took some eye drops and took a anti-allergy pill. It looks ok now, just a little itchy. Got lucky there i guess. Anyway, here are some pics.

Re: Some pics of todays work

    time for an update
cleanup the inner left wheel arch today. Imagine a grinder, dril machine, with about 10 sorts of grinding pads, and lots of very hard to reach corners. Took me a whopping 4 hours to get the arch clean

o yeah, the goal to clean the arches, is to remove the old and cracked sealing. From time to time you couldnt even guess there was rust under there.

    here’s some pics
You can clearly see the easy parts are done, and some pain in the ass parts to be done

After I guess 1,5 hours more work on these tiny sports. looks clean dough

And le piece the resistance, its all worth it when it looks shiny again. sprayed first layer of primer. Still 2 more togo.

cleaned up the right inner arch and sprayed first layer of primer over it.

Things are starting to look clean again. Finally, cause all this time grinding isnt quite motivating

Also bought myself a 3M speedglas welding mask. Lots better then my previous ebay one

Next job, the rear arches. Compared to the fronts, these will be lots easier to clean, lot less hard to reach corners.

thx, hoping to keep it that way

A little Q just popped up.
When spraying a second or third layer of primer. Is it possible to change the colour a bit so you can clearly see you got it all covered ?

Or am i being a freaking amateur now

Think 3 layers of primer will do. Then i layer of those bubble paint that prevents water sticking. Then 1 or 2 white layers as a finish for the bottom.

Re: Some pics of todays work

finished cleaning up the rear right arch, brought it back to bare metal and that was the last piece of the underside !!

what a work is has been, but so rewarding when you see a nice and clean underside of the car.

Sprayed another layer of primer on the car. Decided to add a bit of green colour to the grey primer. This way i could see if i had it all covered.

    Prouved to be very handy.

Pics are not very good, getting dark, will make some decent ones tomorrow.

Dont ask me why those holes are drilled. Still thinking bout the best way to fit wider arches.

Re: Some pics of todays work

There were 2 little bad spots that needed repairing. Cut out a little section and replaced with fresh metal.

Bought myself a stonechip paint gun. The tube you see connected, didnt work at all, so did it all with just the nozzle.

So off we go with stonechipping. Never did this, but appeared to be pretty straightforward. I used 2 tubes of the ones pictures below. This was just enought. Maybe i’ll add some more, donno yet.

Next up, 2 final coats of white !!

i would say that gun is not planned for the stonechip. it's more like for a wax oil...

The gun is correct for stonechip but the flexible nozzle is only for applying waxoyl or other cavity wax.

The correct nozzle is a wide bore tube about 75mm long

    Looking good

    Just a few questions:

Is that a thick enough coat (hard to see from the pics), i was thinking of coating it thick like ford did to the sill, wheel tub and chassis rail areas on mine?

How big is that can is it 1 litre??

    Otherwise keep at it

Re: Some pics of todays work

the can is 1 litre. I used 2 of them. The shop told me this would easily be enough for the whole car.

went over to see the car today and decided i'm gonna put some extra stonechip on it. I guess 2-4 cans.

The current stonechip layer is just too thin. Thx 4 pointing it out. You can still see a shine of the greenish primer through the stonechip.

I'm guessing i should have a thick layer of stonechip, where all of the primer is sufficiently covered.

Here's a pic showing it needs some extra coating

Re: Some pics of todays work

No worries mate, im just trying to work out how many cans i need to get before i do mine! I see what you mean about the primer showing through. My theory is that the thicker it is the less likely it is to crack over time so shouldnt let in too much moisture although where i have been bare metalling the thin stuff covers well, its the seams that seem to suffer the most!

So you think about 5litres should do it then?
