    Re: Mk1 Escort Chassis Tag Decoder

    Could anyone help me,I bought a mk1 escort last year but one of the plates is un-readable and the other tag/plate had gone,as i want to get new ones made up i could do with knowing what they would say on them,i saw a tag decoder in a old classic ford mag but it didnt seem to make sence??Its a 1973 L-reg 1100 base model,full drum brakes,black vinyl seats (with vertical lines),rubber flooring,no extra's inside,diamond white body with chrome trim around the windows and rear panel,no other body extra's! If anyone can help it'd be great!Also where do people get these new tags/plates from and do they stamp them for you?Cheers,Andy

    My son's mk1

    Vehicle No. Entered = BBAFNJ
    Version = L.
    Assembly Plant = Halewood, England.
    Body Type = Escort; 4 Door Saloon.
    Configuration = Right hand drive.
    Engine = 1300cc High compression
    Transmission = Manual Transmission.
    Axle =
    Colour = Maize OR Daytona Yellow
    Trim = Light Tan, PVC.
    Date of Manufacturer = January 1973 - Your Car is NOT tax exempt in the UK (unfortunately)

    All looks ok only question is

    All the printing is missing but the layout is the same as the bottom plate on the decoder although there are no weights stamped
    there is another plate (rectangle shape with corners angled off) with vin number in middle and another code above it that i can just read and yellow k below it. what does this mean?

    Re: Mk1 Escort Chassis Tag Decoder

    Ive never seen my vin plate but then maybe Im lucky too because I also know that Im only the third owner. (fact)
    The guy I bought it off built it for rallying with a pinto in it in 1982, he bought it off the old girl
    that lived next door to his parents an she'd had it since new. As far I know he lost the original vin plate during its
    transformation into a rally car, so all I have is the info on the V5. Ive owned the car since early 1988.

    The info off the V5 came up with this little lot.
    Vehicle No. Entered = BB42JR
    Version =
    Assembly Plant = Halewood, England.
    Body Type = Escort, De Luxe Saloon.
    Configuration =
    Engine =
    Transmission =
    Axle =
    Colour =
    Trim =
    Date of Manufacturer = June 1969 - Yor Car is Tax Exempt in the UK See Here.
    I know it had an 1100 in it before he put the pinto in it.
    And it was 1st registered on 01/11/69 on the V5.

    Hi,
    I've had a bit of a search and all I could come up with was this:

    CD - Lombard Grey
    http://www.oldskoolford.co.uk/forum/....php?p=1058631

    I think it's a pre 1970 colour though, so I'm a bit confused how it can be on a '74 car

    Re: Mk1 Escort Chassis Tag Decoder

    Hi, I am checking the credentials of a Mk1 Escort Mexico that I hope to buy.

    Everything is looking good on the car, all the Type 49 mods etc, and the VIN and AVO plate are there. One issue I have is with the VIN plate, it has an Engine Code of NM. I can’t find any reference to the code in the various decoders I’ve looked at.

    Can anyone help decode this NM reference on the VIN plate ‘Engine’ Code?

    Re: Mk1 Escort Chassis Tag Decoder

    I've used the VIN decoder located here http://www.turbosport.co.uk/extras/68-70.php to try and establish my cars identity.

    I can't make out the trim code but I've established the trim is a GT [could even be De Luxe] Saloon trim; Black PVC with black floor covering.

    What would the Trim code be please so I can get a replacement VIN tag created

    Cheers

    This is turning into a right "chore".

    Having spent 3 hrs this morning searching the web I'm no closer to finding what the trim code is for a Black PVC GT Saloon trim Interior with black floor covering.

    Any ideas please?

    Re: Mk1 Escort Chassis Tag Decoder

    So, I may have been wrong earlier. Several people have recognised my trim as the following;

    Trim = Super Saloon trim; Black PVC with black floor covering.

    All I need now are the codes, 51Dalton has the same but no reply to pm's plus his last post was in 2009 anyway

    Still no ideas off anyone?

    Re: Mk1 Escort Chassis Tag Decoder

    Does anyone have any details of what years/models used what version of the VIN plate design? I have a 1971 1300 Escort that has been transformed into a rally car, and no VIN plates in sight. I know the VIN, and I have photos of the car before it was torn down for rebuild, but that's it so far (and some old MOT's, and the registration plate).

    Also, does Ford keep archives of old build details if we have the VIN? For my Mini I was able to request the "birth certificate" from British Motor Heritage...wondering if there is something similar for Fords?

    Thanks!

    Re: Mk1 Escort Chassis Tag Decoder

    Dear all,

    I am a proud owner of two Escort Mark 1’s, and ever since I owned these two vehicles these were garaged. Being that these vehicles were purchased earlier this year and unfortunately the VIN TAGS are actually lost, I am actually looking

    to get as much information as I can regarding these cars.

    One of my Escort was manufactured in 1969, whilst the other one was manufactured in 1974. I need some help to track data for these both vehicles as i ‘m about to start the restoration process on these two cars,

    and since the VIN plates that are usually found near the engine bay seem to be lost, I cannot complete a full factory restoration process. What I actually need is all the information regarding these cars which is the data which is used to be found on those VIN

    Tags. However the restoration process is not the only problem that I am encountering as without this data I cannot even get the plates for these cars to be eligible to be driven in Maltese Roads as

    a classic car.

    If I may ask can someone help me to obtain this data below you can find some information such as chassis numbers which might help you in your search,

    Escort MK1 1969 Chassis NO : BBATHT77966

    Escort MK1 1974 Chassis NO : BBATNE79298

    Re: Mk1 Escort Chassis Tag Decoder

    you already asked this elsewhere, what else would it be from??????

    its an 1100cc 4 door so not exactly a prime candidate for ringing, as i already said engine and in number match and the 1100x/f was only used in escorts, so its highly unlikely to be from anything else

    is the vin umber on a plate or stamped somewhere

    Re: Mk1 Escort Chassis Tag Decoder

    Thanks that's a great tool.

    This was my description:-

    Vehicle No. Entered = BBATNU
    Version = L.
    Assembly Plant = Halewood, England.
    Body Type = Escort; 2 Door Saloon.
    Configuration = Right hand drive.
    Engine = 1100cc High compression. Now a 2.0l pre 205 block
    Transmission = Manual Transmission. Now Type 9
    Axle = English 3.89:1 Lord knows what it is now could be original?
    Colour = Maize OR Daytona Yellow Now Olympic Blue
    Trim = Black, PVC. No cloth RS2000 replica
    Date of Manufacturer = Febuary 1973 - Yor Car is NOT tax exempt in the UK Is this correct ?

    Is there anywhere you can find out what model the engine came from ? Engine Nos. UA 07731 also has 70HM6015B-A casting but I think that's pretty common on these blocks?

    Thanks again.

    A 1973 car will deffo be Tax exempt and the other mods could be deemed 'non significant' meaning no MOT's either!

    Thanks katana,

    Interesting with mods over standard; hopefully haven't changed the number of cylinders so no change.

    Anyone know about finding what model of can an engine was assigned to when new with the engine numbers ?

    Can't remember how this works, but would the 2.0 an 5 sp box not add up to the extra points to make it non tax exempt?

    Thanks Rallyrob,
    I also not sure where I am with this.
    Dot want to op a can of worms so to speak.
    I'm sure as read on DVLA site something about only significant change such as number of cylinders? Hopefully I'm right.

    The 2.0L was available from the manufacturer at the time so is not an issue and IMO the 5 speed is a Ford modified Type E box, done for fuel efficiency so also safe - even if not, the points aren't sufficient to trigger the penalty.

    Hi all,
    I've recently bought a South African mk2 Escort 1600 sport.
    It doesn't have the riveted on id tag, on the slam panel , but does have a vin number of 4 letters and 13 numbers.
    How can I check from the chassis number what the original options were.
    The Vin number seems to be peculiar to South African Fords.
    I cant find any reference on the internet, and was hopeful someone on here could help/point me in the right direction.
    Thanks in advance

    I don't believe you can determine options from a chassis number otherwise two identical cars with the same options would have the same chassis number! If the build plate isn't present then there is little chance of finding that info out!

    Hi Thanks, for replying.
    My main concern was whether I could ascertain that it was a 1600 Sport, and to see if I could find out any other information from it ,like build date.
    I wondered if the vin could identify the car , and someone somewhere had a data base with the build detail of that particular chassis number ?

    Also the title of the thread should be "MK2" but I can not work out how to edit it !

    I suspect the original SA registration document 'might' confirm 1600 but 'Sport'? Build date is unlikely as not important to registration. SA cars are notorious for having lack of detail / information when imported and re-registered here!

    Thanks,
    The SA reg doc confirms an Escort 1600, but that's it.
    Oh well, looks like that's all I'm going to be able to find out at present

    Re: Mk1 Escort Chassis Tag Decoder

    Chassis numbers on UK cars do include build month and year, and engine number so 2 identically spec'd cars would have different chassis numbers due to different engines. The fact it's a SA car brings its own problems.

    Thanks,
    Do the SA cars have a different numbering system,
    If so does anyone have any SA knowledge ?

    Re: Mk1 Escort Chassis Tag Decoder

    After much research I have found out that my Mk2 1600 Sport has a AAP Chassis number. this is a chassis number assigned by the South African Police service. Its given to a car that has been stolen and recovered.
    That's why it doesn't relate to any thing Escort.
