    Tax or MOT first

    Hi Folks

Ill apologise in advance if this is a daft question
Im planning to get my Escort on the road in the coming months and wondered what i need to do first? DO i tax it first then book it for an MOT or do i need to have the car MOT'd before i have it taxed, in which case taking it for an MOT with no road tax is just asking to be stopped! Again probably a daft question but i had to ask.

Ive just sent the updated V5 away with engine capacity change and colour change, so once that comes back ill be at the next step; i.e. tax or MOT

    Cheers

you need a valid mot and insurance before you can tax it. normal method is insure, then book mot at local mot station. you are allowed to take car to and from nearest mot station if it is booked in for test or retest. once mot'd you can tax it

    Re: Tax or MOT first

You need an mot and insurance to tax a vehicle, if the car is booked in for an mot you are legally allowed to drive to and from an mot station without tax and mot as long as the car is insured.

    Beat me to it

Just don't be tempted to go off route for a little jolly on the way too or from the test centre,as people have been had for this

You can actually tax a car without insurance now except northern Ireland . They rely on the law that you should have insurance. not a lot of people know this .

Id be more concerned about your V5 ! I sent mine off for change of engine number and capacity and it took ages they needed receipts, proof of purchase and correct fitment
Work did me a letter which did the trick but then it was lost in the post twice ! one recorded delivery
Dvla then charged me £20 for another log book as it was the post office that lost the recorded one ? They did send me 6 1st class stamps as compo tho ?
Ended up paying to have it sent next day special delivery, It took nearly 6 months in the end????
    Good luck mate

I would speak to the garage you use for your everyday car and explain the situation if it's the same place that your going to mot the car I don't think they will have much of an issue with it

    Re: Tax or MOT first

I'm lucky as I work in the trade and one of the lads is ex police so knew exactly what to put in the letter.
I paid cash for the engine privately and fitted it myself so I had no receipts either!
Someone has suggested that they paid more attention to mine as it qualified for historic tax when it was 40 years old at Xmas ???

    Re: Tax or MOT first

I sent the v5 away on the 3rd of this month and they said it could take up to 4 weeks, Ill leave it for another week or so and ill give them a call and chase them.
The last thing i want is to spend 9 years building a car, finally get it MOTd and have to wait ages till i can actually take it on the road!

    Ha ha, true
Although the thought of having it MOTd and not being able to use it would be proper shite!

    Re: Tax or MOT first

They only usaully want proof its fitted if it alters the tax band the car is originally in from my experience.

I went from a 1600cc PLG tax band Ford engine to a Yamaha R1 998cc engine in my kit car so this made it the cheaper PLG tax band(under 1400cc)for road tax,so I needed a letter of confirmation off a garage as proof the smaller engine was fitted.
