    twin choke Weber information

    Hi all,

my escort has a 1600 sport engine and carb in it, the carb I am told is a twin choke Weber. There is no choke cable on it, the old owner never put one on. But tbh I can't see a choke on it? I have tried to take a photo of the model of carb and it has this code on it:

    WEBER
    71 HI DO
    B 3H27

Here are a couple of crap photos as I was in a rush when leaving the car.

i want to get the choke working as it is a sod to start in the cold.

    thanks
    kris

Basically I would like to know if there is one on it? Do you have a pic of where on the carb?

    Thanks

"Twin choke" is slang for a carb with two venturis (barrels) as opposed to the single choke of lower spec carbs. The carb in the pic doesn't look to have a choke fitted, no coolant hoses or cable going to it (other than the throttle cable). Check the side of the flange at the base of the carb, it should be stamped with the actual model number of the carb. The tag doesn't have the model on it, just the make and a part number.
If it ain't Ford, don't fix it!

    Google is your friend!
Not a Ford but the carb is the same; chokecable centre left of photo.

Hello sad old man, with the eagle eyes ...

do you mean 1st or 2nd pic Graham?
On the first photo it looks like there is a connection-pipe from an auto-choke mechanism but with no hose attached.

yes i see the pipe in the first pic second pic also seems to show choke mech but, but if we are seeing a choke pipe with no connection, then the choke must be disabled or the flaps removed or it would be on all the time

    Re: twin choke Weber information

I can't a model number on it as yet but here is some decent photos:

    Front view

    Side view

    Rear view

How ever when taking the top off, the top butter flies were just open and the lever on the left hand side was apart so that the butterflies would be open all the time. Is this mechanism on the left of the inlets of the carbs the choke?

Should it be connected like this photo?

Is there a way of getting the choke mechanism to work with the pipes? I don't know a lot about this sort of setup.
    Thanks
    Kris

    Re: twin choke Weber information

You are going in the right direction.
In this photo the auto-choke-mechanism is in the oval.
Coolingwater goes through the choke (hose-in and hose-out) heating up a spring which expands.
And this pulls down the chokeplate rod, and the choke-plates open.

    Re: twin choke Weber information

To have the auto-choke working you will need to route the waterhose from heater to inletmanifold via the choke-mechanism.
Also the pipes on the auto-choke mechanism need to be horizontal, or almost horizontaly.
By slightly changing the angle you can change the time the auto-choke is working.
You can move the actual outerhousing (where the hoses attach to) if you loosen the 3 screws (2 are visible) a bit.

    It's probably a 32/36 DGAV.

    Re: twin choke Weber information

Hi all its me again :-(

Just to check the best way of routing the pipes, is it a matter of taking the bottom heater matrix hose off, and connecting it to the left side of the two carb coolant connections, then from the right side go back to the heater matrix?

Or does it go in to the right side and out the left?

    Thanks
    Kris

    Re: twin choke Weber information

IIRC the correct route is from manifold to carb, from carb to heater. the carb wont care which way the coolant flows

    Re: twin choke Weber information

    Hi all,

I have connected up the auto choke, not sure if I have my pipes right though. I have been advised to take a pipe from bottom hose connection, to choke mechanism then out again and into top heater connection, then from inlet manifold to bottom heater connection?

Also connected the choke mechanism and it doesn't seem to work, when it was Cold it didn't really hold the choke butterfly very well, so I disconnected the lever in the air filter housing and moves easily by hand even when the engine is warm.

    Thanks
    Kris

Have you tried pressing the throttle pedal to engage the Auto choke?

we used to run them on the road like it, very ticky in winter with our climate, but in a warm climate your be fine without the flaps, your need to dab teh throttle a couple of times to squirt some fuel down the carb but it should start ok, you may just need to keep it "alive" until it warms up slightly.
