    Black estate (Abee)

Carrying on from the thread put up by flyingbenny http://www.turbosport.co.uk/showthre...t=#post3024490

After and 8-9 hour round trip I Picked up Abee early 2016 with plans of dailying for a couple years and then a full resto.
I've always been a big fan of low, clean and simple estates.
However, the more i poked the more fell off so i eventually decided i'm going to just get on with it now instead, I'm no professional so don't expect top quality work. Just an 18 year old obsessed with cars and taught by myself and my dad!

So, the day i picked it up.

And after many piles of rust and filler and all sorts i found the a-post and decided it was time to start the work.
Before i did anything else i wanted to get that done to put some strength back into it.

    Splash shield on

    Rust converted and hammerite

Welds were pretty messy as the welder was playing up but they were functional. not that i'm that good anyway
And that's about where we're at now. i'm in no rush to finish this as i don't quite have the funds at the moment but i'm slowly working on it.
The longer it takes the more my insurance drops so i aim to have it out summer 2018, whether that happens or not

Cheers, planning to get it on a jig once the front end's replaced so it should make it a lot easier. I've learnt plenty of lessons from the fiesta i restored last year (like warping rear arches ) so it should turn out good.

They're mk1 a-posts but the doors on estates are bolt on instead of pins. so instead of the big hole on the corners it's small mulitple holes in the centre

Got a little more done, inner wing should be ready to weld on by next weekend.

Cleaned up, rust converted, zinc primer and hammerite. plenty of protection..

Inner wing and strut mount is on and in the right place, so happy with this considering I've never taken this much off a car before

No idea why they were there but the dents in the inner wing were welded and then a skim of filler (i still need to tidy up)
As well as making up a new strength bracket for the front bumper mount

I then found our long lost spot welder which was exciting as it meant i could get a lot of stuff a lot cleaner

Now to do it all over again on the other side!

Other inner wing is off and i've been cleaning it all up every now and then, in the process of searching for a job so it's on pause at the moment.

    Re: Black estate (Abee)

Made some progress, slowly but surely..
Also, a spot welder is a life saver when it comes to this work!

I don't have many photos of the specifics as i did this all in a weekend and just got on with it but here's the ones i took.
Everything rust treated and coated. also repaired a section of the chassis leg.

End of day 1, inner wing and inner front panel on.

End of day 2, Splash shield, strut support on, front panel 50 percent on.

And then the next morning i had it all welded up and on the ground by 9am!

A hell of a lot better than it was, and flat strut supports.. Lol

And of course i had to find one of the old rotten wings and put clamp it on just to have a look!

It still needs a lot of tidying up and finishing off of course but my goal was to get it rolling and i did that, now to eventually work my way backwards.

My Dad managed to get his truck rolling so i rolled the escort outside for the first time this year, was good to get it out and have a good look and refresh and figure out what's next.
what wasn't fun was the seized rear brakes

    Re: Black estate (Abee)

Modified the jig i built for my mk2 fiesta to fit the escort, the underneath especially the chassis rails seem reasonably solid considering how bad other parts were.
It's a shame the sills are so wonky as the drivers side is pretty solid.

Nice one mate, it's good to see ole Blacky getting the love and attention she deserves. You obviously poked a lot harder than I ever did, I didn't have the time money or space to end up with two escorts on jigs😁

Keep crackin' on, it'll be a very cool car one day. I shall be watching this build for sure.

Glad you're watching mate, I knew it needed it and didn't want to start this soon but couldn't keep the screwdriver away from it!

So, no progress since my last post unfortunately due to "life" but I started a youtube series a few weeks ago and I aim to hopefully get it back on the road later this year/next year.

Wow, It's been a while since I've been on here.

The escort hasn't made as much progress as i wish it had but it's been coming along lately with parts on the way for it.
It's had a lot of the small patches done, around the windscreen, A-Posts, wing rails, drivers inner and outer sill, passenger inner sill, floors etc.
    51556317_2548086655218445_1399283122217943040_n (1).jpg

    55897337_2643029265724183_6547405775617130496_n.jpg

I'm currently waiting on some new rear wheel tubs and in the meantime replacing all the rotten steel so they have something to actually attach to.
once the tubs are done it's arches/rear quarter replacements, small patches on the underneath and then it's done welding wise.

I aim to get it out on the road for next year, convenient as it's tax exempt then too! Cheers

Slowly getting somewhere, weldathon is almost over and plans have been decided for drive train. It won't be the usual that's for sure.
Excuse the constant mess in my workspace, it does get cleaned up honest...
