bmw 2002 200bhp atmo race engine

just found this one a power plot from my old car with a 2.0 8v m10 engine, its not the best it ever produced, that had a few brake more but its still 100bhp per litre.

the engine was a true 2000cc as i had the crank offset ground slightly so it stayed within the capacity limit after a 0.5mm rebore.

although i had machined the hell out of every thing inside the engine the only non origonal bmw parts in it was a 336 degree cam, a set of steel rockers and some pinto valve springs, despite a 11.75 compression ratio even the pistons were std cast ones, all be it with massive valve cutouts machined in them so 200 bhp was pretty good going

Re: bmw 2002 200bhp atmo race engine

i raced it for quite a few seasons, where it was very competitive but eventually i started to loose out to lighter more powerfull 16v fwd cars as back then the regulations didnt differeniate between 8 and 16v's and it started to become much less competitive so i moved up a class by turboing the engine, and then promptly had a high speed fight with the armaco at brands which wrote the shell off, the so i dropped the engine, box, wheels and brakes in a later E30 shell and sold the rest, i ran with the now 8 v turbo for a season before going to the m3 lump i now have.

most of the bits of the atmo and turbo versions of the engine were sold off on ebay, heres a pic of it in turbo form

its worth noting the huge long trumpets didnt really add much power, infact i could of shortened them and gained a couple of brake but what they did was to give a much wider powerband

Re: bmw 2002 200bhp atmo race engine

everyone talked about the trumpets but for me the special thing about the engine was the fact that it contained so many std bmw internal parts, the only pukka race bits were as i said a cam and some steel rockers, and some pinto valve springs,

admittedly it took me several years to get it to 200bhp, i got stuck around 190 for a while, if i had the dosh i would build another one and run in class D in DMN where i know i would have a lot of fun with the blue ovals................

    5 years on..............

and i've built the same engine again, well not quite, this time i've bored and stroked it to 2467cc, used 12.1 cr, same cam and valves but more headwork, bhp per lire is down to 92, but torque is monster
