    Exhaust silencer question

A mate of mine tonight asked me a question that I did not honestly know the answer too.

He's got a mk2 escort fitted with a YB running approx 300 bhp

The car is fitted with just one rear silencer.
( perforated tube with wadding )

He he wants to remove all the internals in the silencer so it is basically just a box with an in and out at either end.

My my first thought was it would cause a lot of back pressure and restrict flow.

The air once it hits the silencer will be "bouncing around" before being exited.

I know straight through rough pipes would work better

    what do you guys think

    many thanks.

In my opinion it needs the wadding around the perforated tube , otherwise you would have seen it different elsewhere & everyone would be on the same bus.

Just replace it with a straight bit of pipe. Was on a track day a while back with a fisher fury with a cosy turbo in it running about 300hp. Just had a pipe, no silencer, sounded good and not too loud, the turbo take out most of the energy in the exhaust turning it into boost so less left for noise compared to a NA car.

    Thanks all.
So am I right in saying if you remove the internals it will create excessive back pressure.

might do might not, probably wont do it any favors, although if the output end its tapered i dont see it creating massive back pressure, but the other question is why would he want to?
