I might be wrong, so dont hold me to it, but I seem to remember someone saying it wouldn't matter if
wasn't on there at all. It will only go so far down into the oil pump and so far up inside the distributor
    shaft anyway.

I think it's to stop you pulling the drive out of the oil pump if the distributor 's removed for some reason.

thats it, you dont really need it though , IF the drive comes out with the dizzy you can just put it back in again

Its job is to stop the oil pump drive coming out if you remove the distributor it goes around half way down but it’s not critical in fact you dont need it at all

    Re: Pinto oil pump drive

Hey guys, sorry to bother, but maybe you know which way is correct to put the driveshaft if it's with a lock? Because i am rebuilding pinto, and i kinda forgot. As i remember i should be shorter side to the dizzy, but i found in this forum someone said otherwise. Maybe someone knows 100% ? Or should i just remove that lock ?

as i said i answered on the other thread you posted on, but it really doesnt matter, if the clip is too far one way, fitting the oil pump/distributor will push it to where it needs to be. there are loads of engines out there without the clip fitted, the drive cannot go either far enough up or down for it not to drive the pump
