    Drum brake re-assembly

What's the accepted wisdom on the easiest way to re-fit the pingfuckit that holds down the brake shoe to the backing plate?

It seems to be avoiding all attempts at compressing and rotating at the minute, so I guess my technique's in need of finessing

Proper tool for the job is probably best.
I hold the washer type thingy in the end of a pair of pliers and use my other hand to hold the stalky thing into the backplate.

Your stalky thing doesn't look long enough in that pic.
Is it all the way in?

yep as dave says, i used a pair of pliers, held it with my finger at the back, pushed the spring bit down with the pliers slightly open, clamp the pliers on the end of the pin and twist it... it did work. also swearing at it helps.... a lot of swearing

I use pliers too, mine are snap-on with two positions I use them on the widest

TBH if the pin's as short as it looks in the picture it's the wrong one, they're different lengths for different width shoes btw

    Cheers folks

My stalky thing is actually longer than it seems, it's just not standing all the way up at the moment I'll give it a go with the grip-squash-twist suggestions in the morning

Use a little bit of oil on the mating faces of the spring,it helps it turn when you twist the cap onto the pin

I always wondered what those things were officially called. Now I know. Pingfuckit! A perfect description.

    Re: Drum brake re-assembly

    Mea culpa!

It turns out that there's two lengths of pin supplied in the fitting kit - 42mm and 36mm - and amazingly I'd managed to fish all the short ones out of the bag thinking they were all the same

Using the longer pin (as these are 2.8 shoes and thus deeper) meant the pingfuckit went back on nice and easy

P.S. For anyone who happens to be doing a search in the future, the Lockheed brake shoe fitting kit part number is LY1006

    Re: Drum brake re-assembly

All back together and looking nice and shiny - not a great help in itself, but at least twenty years of crud has been cleaned away and they've got their best chance of actually working

One last question, though - does anyone know where I can get hold of a pair of the rubber seals that go over the handbrake levers and onto the backplate? One was missing and the other ripped to shreds I've tried ebay and googling, but can't think of a proper name for them.

I get all my stuff like that from Revolution Capri Spares, he sells a lot on gaybay but his e-mail is paulgee88@hotmail.com or his cell is 07801699088. Ive bought numerous little rubbers etc off him for mine over the last year or so.
