Engine rebuild
Hi all I'm close to sending my pinto engine off to get some work done to run a turbo
Is it worth buying all new bearings and doing a full overhaul if so what items would be best to buy to atchieve around 300 bhp
Atm I have
2wd Yb pistons
Rods
Rings
2nd hand oil pump witch I'm going to just buy new
and I think I have a underpiston oil spray thing and a 2wd Yb sump
What headgasket is best
Are there any bearings that are going to help me along the way
I'm going to use cosworth management so getting Yb dizzy ect
Cheers
John

Re: Engine rebuild
Im no engine builder, but by the sounds of it you would want to start with all new bearings, that way you know everything is fresh. Unless you already know whats inside is still fresh to start with anyway...

Re: Engine rebuild
Will I just need standard bearings for a pinto or is there upgraded ones

Re: Engine rebuild
dont buy bearings before the engine is stripped, otherwise there is a high risk of you buying standard size only to find the crank needs grinding or has already been ground, rendering teh bearing you have just bought usless

Re: Engine rebuild
Good point Graham. I had wondered about sizes... I put a pinto together years ago that had been supplied with the wrong size bearings... It was fine until it warmed up then the oil pressure dropped off. After having the sump off insitu at least twice thinking it was the oil pump it turned out to be wrong size bearings.

Also what headgasket is reliable

Re: Engine rebuild
Although i've spec'd and used HD bearings before but honestly couldn't tell the difference between stock and HD apart from described materials. If the sizes and clearances are correct, the bearings don't actually touch so shouldn't make any difference - oil and pressure is far more important IMO.

Re: Engine rebuild
heavy duty materials are usually softer, which means if there is any contact the bearing will material "absorb" it rather than wear the crank.

Re: Engine rebuild
So I should check to crank 1st
Basically I'm giving a motorsport company my engine to build just want as many parts as I can as I'm sure they will slap a bit extra on if they need to buy stuff for the engine

Re: Engine rebuild
couple of things you may not understand,
1 they will probably buy the bearings cheaper than you,
2, they probably have a preferred make, and might not use some other, or at least give no guarantees if you supply,
3, if you supply parts they will probably charge you more to make up for lost profit.
trust me on this i run a garage, if my customers started supplying there own parts i would have to charge more labour to stay profitable!
