Looking for advice on borg warner rear axle (import)

Hi Guys, Im looking for advice on my Mk1 Import, its a 1968 with a Borg Warner rear axle, the problem I have is I didnt get a propshaft with the car. Ive looked at and measured a few different Mk1 Mk2 flanges but they are different. Has anyone else encountered this problem and Im also concerned that parts may not be available? Ill be running a 1600 crossflow. Any advice would be great thanks!!

Ok, I've never heard of a Borg Warner axle on a mk1 - are you sure? Photos would help. Usually overseas escorts had a Koln axle which is very similar to - but not as strong as - the Atlas axle.

It has Borg Warner cast into it and I believe it's known as an m68. It's a South African import and I'm looking for maybe an imported prop or see if anyone else knows if parts a resdily available etc.

I knew of South African Escorts having different axles but never heard of a Borg Warner one - would love to see a photo of it!

May be cheaper just to bin the axle and stick an english in it rather than going to the effort of either finding the correct flange and having a prop made for it

Thats crackers to bin the axle because of that. Just get a new flange made up along with a new prop. Let me know if you need any help.

Heres a picture of the Borg Warner, very similar to the Koln but does vary. BORG-2016-09-18 10.58.55.jpg

Yeah that is a possibility but my plan is to try to keep the car as original as possible, Id like to explore the possibilities of using it befor writing it off. Thanks for the reply though!!

Thanks 4parajon, would really appreciate your help on it or any advice. Heres a few pictures of the flange, its 90mm in diameter, hole is 8mm not threaded so believe this was a nut and bolt. Hole distance accross centre is 85mm. Ill be running a 1600 crossflow with standard 4 speed box.BORG_1214.jpgBORG_1213.jpgBORG-2016-09-18 10.58.55.jpg

its quiet an easy job to machine a new pcd into that axles flange so you can mount a prop of your choice.i,ve did it a few times in the past just take it to your local machine shop if i was doing that it would cost no more than 50euro.

Thanks mick22, thats great advice, thank you. Would you just re drill the holes to the correct pcd on the diff flange using the measurements taken from a standard prop?

no definatly not any decent should have the means to accurately index the holes its totally not a job for a halfords drill, its vital its done with precision hence a machine shop job only,if you can find a place bring them the diff flange and the prop you intend to use.

If you have a spare prop to sell I'd be interested. I think temporarily I'll get the flange re drilled so it matches a standard prop?

Hardly crackers, just my opinion for the long term, if he removes the flange he will have to reset the backlash of the diff, unless he is exceptionally careful when he re-tightens the pinion. Plus in future there are no upgrades for this axle, ie LSD or CWP options.

OP Find one of the guys who imports these, as they may solve your headache with the right prop, or find someone who is changing this diff out and will have the prop going spare, would hate you to spend money only to find the diff is scrap

The only prop i have is the old one off my anglia before going to large flange. The prop has been shortened so no use on anything now. I need the front yoke (2000e box) but more than happy to cut off the rear flange if that is any use to you even for measuring. The prop itself is very thin being an anglia one so wouldn't really be upto the escort anyway.

I can't see it being that difficult getting a prop made up. All you need will be the sizes. speak to
www.northwestpropshafts.com/ I used the chorley site but they have one in manchester aswell. They did my anglia one and i am more than happy with the service.

Why go to the aggro of redrilling / removing diff flanges and or remaking propshafts - just make up an adaption flange to sit between a std prop and the BW flange? A disc of 1/2" steel, drilled to match BW flange and countersunk for bolts to flange then turn 90 degrees and drill to match the prop flange and again countersink. The 1/2" addition should be accommodated with the slip joint at the gearbox end - gotta be easier?
