Question Duratec 2.3 (L5 MZR) differences

Coming from a land where 2.0 Duratecs are not that common, I'm looking at 2.3 Duratec ex Mazda3/Mazda6 for my Mk2 Escort build.

These are commonly found in 2003-2008 models, however there appear to be subtle differences.

The easiest way I've found to identify them is where the oil dipstick is located:

Early: Inlet manifold side of rocker cover
Later: Through rocker cover between Cyl 1&2

Sidenote: RWD Ranger's apparently have it on the Exhaust side

BUT I'm not sure what performance differences there are.
    1. Direct Injection?
    2. VVTI?
    3. Fly by wire vs Cable?

Is anyone able to shed light on this?

Keen to understand this so others can also be helped

The non-vvt 2.3s have a terrible flowing 2.0 head. These are on rangers avoid. The VVT 2.3s are pretty good, is about the same head as the MX5 2.0, but they're not as good as the 2.5. The 2.5 is the only mzr I'd bother dealing with, especially if you're not planing on opening it up.
