    Mk2 Escort Single piece door glass?

    I see many rally guys convert to single piece polycarbonate door "glass"

    But has anyone done / does anyone supply single piece Escort mk2 door glass?

    I think it would tidy up the look of the side profile.

    Many years ago, I did this on a Mk1 Cortina. The principles would be the same for a Mk2 Escort.

    The front edge of the window runner had to be removed from its location (at the back of the quarter light). Cut it down first and mount it at the front of the door, making sure it remains in the same plane (so that glass will line up with the rear runner). You will need to make a single piece glass template. I used some 4mm fibre board. A local double glazing window manufacturer cut the glass for me in toughened glass. The entire window glass cranking mechanism needs to be moved forward to match the new centre of gravity of the single piece glass. I used this as an excuse to fit an electric window mechanism from a Renault 19. This mechanism was a lot more compact than the Ford one. Finally I needed to make custom rubbers.

    None of this was easy and it took so much faffing about to get the glass to slide up/down smoothly, that I did wish I hadn't bothered. I don't want to put you off, just be warned about the work involved.

    Mk2 Escort Single piece door glass?

    How bout modified Capri rubbers for the glass ? Maybe the glass channels modified to fit also 🤔just an idea

    I have converted a 1968 Dodge Charger to single piece glass before so am not a complete noob at these challenges...especially ones people say 'can't be done' !

    I've got a spare passenger Mk2 coupe door at home with rusted base, so think I might whip the skin off and go from there.

    Ianbavs - re Capri rubbers, I was thinking of using Mk1 Capri weather strips as well as the doors are longer and the Mk2/Mk3 door body lines lift at the mirror so likely won't work.


    As a final thought....I could just take the window frame off a Capri door and section it to fit back on the Mk2 Escort door. That way the Capri rubbers would 100% fit. Just unsure about the window frame profile vs Escort Mk2 profile.

    And we haven't yet got to glass....
