    1.6 Zetec SE engine

There doesn't seem to be anything on this site about the Zetec SE engine so I want to start a discussion on this relatively new and undiscovered high reving highly tuneable engine.

The Zetec SE is known in the US as the Sigma engine,
and later 1.6 Zetec SE's with variable valve timing are labelled as Duratec Ti-VCT (Twin independant Variable Camshaft Timing) engines.

    The engine comes in 1250cc, 1400cc, 1600cc, and 1700cc.
They are fitted in ford Fiesta, Focus and Puma.
The 1700cc engine only comes in the puma and the racing puma delivers 155bhp at 6000rpm.
The 1.6 litre unit produces 99bhp at 6000rpm and 104ft.lbf at 4000rpm and 115bhp with variable valve timing.

This engine is very popular in the kit-car market because of its low weight and easy tuneability.

Yamaha helped to design this all alloy lightwieght powerplant which only weighs 82kg!
With heavy duty con-rod bolts fitted these engines can rev to 8000rpm.

Shawspeed say you can get 220bhp out of the 1600cc unit with the standard size valves!
    That is 137.5bhp per litre!
Shawspeed sell tunning kits from 120bhp right up to 210bhp.

Here's a link to the Shawspeed website.
    http://www.shawspeed.com/fsigma.htm

Another Zetec SE tuner is BPJ services.
If you click on Duratec 1.4/2.5 offer in the website you will see some more information.
    http://www.information.gb.com/bpjservices/frame.html

    Another link below
    http://www.dervman.com/zetecseengine.htm

In my opinion this engine is as good if not better than the 1.6 BDA engine.
You can get just as much power from a Zetec SE for a fraction of the cost of an expensive BDA.

For a mk2 escort competition rallycar 200bhp is easily achievable with,
A Pair of 300 degree 10mm lift cams + HD springs,
    Vernier pulleys,
    Ported and flowed head,
    Forged pistons and rods,
    45mm throttle bodies + a programable ECU,
(Or possibly 45mm webbers with a belt driven vauxhall distributor instead of TB's and ECU)
    11 to 11.5 compression ratio,
    Competion bronze bearings.

This engine would be ideal for rallying or racing in a modified 1600cc class and would also make a very good fast road engine when tuned to about 160bhp.

If you have any other info please add it to this Thread.

    Re: 1.6 Zetec SE engine

Or you could do what I have done and Supercharge it

I used Paul Jackson at BPJ Services, very helpful guy and easy to deal with, Shawspeed did not even return my calls - make of that what you will

    Bellhousing available for Type 9:

1.6 is 120hp standard from memory

It was not done in conjunction with Yamaha, it was a Yamaha design with no Ford involvement

Figures look good for 200+ on standard internals with the supercharger set up

More when I think of it

    Re: 1.6 Zetec SE engine

i guess its because it dosnt follow ford bolt patterns like other zetecs do, so im not sure it would be that much cheaper than say a duratec. other than being lighter and in smaller capacities i cant see a benifit... unless of course it is much cheaper to get in and running

But if you are running in a Capacity class of up to 1600 then it makes a lot of sense.....

Imagine Andy Pipes Mk1, as light as it is and with great handling and then add an even lighter engine - with 220hp Normally aspirated

If you are capacity limited its a great engine and in something like an Anglia would be superb

    Re: 1.6 Zetec SE engine

yep, sorry dom thats what i meant with the 'smaller capacities' comment

i want to get into sprints/hillclimbs and most have a upto 1400 class, it would be mega bucks to get a 1400 xflow to the same power of the sigma unit, and the same goes for the 1600. so it does look like an attractive alternative, although dont the regs limit engine choice to orginal units, and you end up in the sports libre class, excuse the ignorance if im wrong, not read too much into it yet

    Re: 1.6 Zetec SE engine

my mates got a 1.6 SE in his westfield - runs sprint races and he wins with it!!!!

getting 130 bhp at the wheels right now - but the big advantage he says is the weight - ally block and ally head is the big advantage - in a lightweight car the handling set spot on and its worth another load of BHP as well as being able to throw it round corners and really incredible speeds.. glued to the road it is..

    Re: 1.6 Zetec SE engine

For sprints in an escort you will be in sports libre yes so it make sense to go as big as you can then, and a supercharger for good measure

The Sigma engine and type 9 box even with the supercharger and chargecooler fitted is lighter than the 1200cc Iron Kadett motor and gearbox that came out

i have fitted a se engine in my ka, with loads of bits from shawspeed, they were hard to get hold of, but were great once i did, cr500dom looks like a phase 1 engine you have there, did you look at getting a phase 2 or did it come up at a good price?

I agree its a crackin motor, i have the 1250cc engine in my car and for what is essentially a 1.2 engine its quick, ok the torque isnt great in it(i'e uphill with loads in the car)but 3000rpm plus and its off and pulls right up to 5500rpm.........even tested out the limiter 6900rpm, better than the 6400 that wasin my old 1.6 fezzy si

does the SE have the same inlet and exhaust pattern as the Zetec E?
have a spare ST170 manifold at home and I'm curious if I could bolt it on a SE?

Nope totally different...... opposite sides of the engine as well Zetec E is RH Inlet, Zetec SE is LH Inlet

    Re: 1.6 Zetec SE engine

I bought a new 1600 zetec se crate motor from ford and I will be fitting it into my mk2 escort rallycar over the summer.

I will be making up all the conversion parts myself, chassis engine mountings, propper 4 into 2 into 1 tuned length tig welded manifold, water rail, big wing baffled sump, etc.

I was wondering if many other people on here would be interested in buying the conversion parts from me through ebay, the parts would be high quality and rally tested to ensure easy fitment and relaibility. The price of the parts would be very reasonable aswel.

It will take some time to develop/test the parts but I should be well on the way by the end of the summer.

Let me no if you would be interested by posting here,
I will creat a new post with pics of all the parts when I have them finnished.

    Hi Fella

Yes deffinately interested. We have one of these engines in our Darrian, see photo below. It's dry sumped, with head work and cams and is on Jenveys. We are hoping to put one in our MK2 escort we are starting to build into a rally car, so your kit would be ideal. Belhousings are readily available already.

I bought a dummy engine, new bellhousing, clutch, etc for mockup and will be starting to make up the parts soon, I will let you no when I have some of the parts made and send pics.

Where did you buy the dry sump kit from and does it mount on the exhaust or intake side of the motor?

Any info on what your engine spec is in your darrian?
    Looks good by the way.

    Thanks for the interest.

yes andy pipes car would handle and go better, but such an engine swap would put him in the same class as a 550bhp 4wd wrc escort and bonkers horse power Skylines, the same being true of hill climbs and sprints, engine swaps put you in the anything goes sports libre class

    Jason.
Dry sump kit was from PACE oils systems.....LONG WAIT.....about 6 times as long as quoted, so if you want one of these plan ahead (got many many excuses)...when it arrived was missing a pully (never supplied)....Shawspeed made/modified one to fit in the end..... and one of the fittings was the wrong size (eventually sorted after several more phone calls)...this fitting then leaked due to crappy oil seals (sorted by fitting the ones from the original 'wrong' fitting)....anyway rant over.....pump fits on the inlet side.......if you are going dry sump, suggest you get the kit BEFORE you make engine mounts as we threw away the mount in the kit and used a combined engine/pump mount we made....quite easy and MUCH better for our application. To be fair the pace mount is nicely made and may well suit most other cars.

They do two types of pump...twin scavenge only (this uses the original engine pump to supply pressure, which is what we have used).........or twin scavenge and pressure in which case you dispense with the engines original pump.

A tip used on the Darrian, due to the oil tank being a lot higher in the car than the engine....If you go dry sump (I would) then make sure when you wire teh car so you can switch off the ECU allowing you to crank the engine without it firing, this is so that if any oil has migrated back into the engine when standing it is pumped out in a few seconds before you fire her up.

Due to the shape of the darrian engine bay and mounting we couldn't fit the oil filter so its now on a remote (easy)

Engine is from Shawspeed, has head work, cams, verniers, jenvey direct to head throttle bodies and is on Omex 600 management. Flywheel/clutch came from Scholar engines (I am sure Shawspeed could have supplied this actually).

The engine had done 11000 miles in fiesta (crashed), and shawspeed lent us a bare block and head to use whilst we did the install. Exhaust was custom made in stainless to Shawspeed's specified lengths.

Shawspeed are very good quaility and value I found and clearly know their stuff.

Let us knwo how you get on....these engines will be superb for a 1600 class escort, small light, decent torque and if you do it with webbers (as we will when we do one for the escort), quite reasonable price....you can get some ideas from www.shawspeed.com

    Hello

Moggy, what size exhaust pipe are you using on your darrian?

I'm not sure wether to use 1.625" or 1.75" outside diameter.

Also what shawspeed cam are you using and what BHP does your motor have?

    Regards
    Jason.

mmm i did look at this a fair while back but was persuaded against the idea but when you start talking about 200 brake it gets me interested, and now im cutting the bulkhead anyway
any idea what sort of power a 1.4 lump would make, home built etc, not wanting to spend thousands of pounds to get it to fit into the hole?
im guessing the most expensive bit will be sorting the sump out?

I will cost less to fit and ECU than bodging a dizzy. The fuel saved alone will be worth it let alone the improved response etc. It is crazy to fit a modern tuneable engine then de-tune it!!

    Re: 1.6 Zetec SE engine

I have a 1.6 Zectec SE with gearbox and a good number of anciliaries (all the inlet, catalyst, clutch, etc).
It was removed from a brand new undamaged project car about 8 years ago and has been in the garage ever since, bores oiled and occasionally turned over. It has done zero miles !
I'm in Worcestershire and open to sensible offers if anyone is interested,

    Re: 1.6 Zetec SE engine

    Hello from Russia!
    You have interesting forum
    I own a Ford Focus MK2 with modified 1.6 L I4 Zetec-SE (100hp) now called Duratec.
    From wiki
The engine line up for the Mk 2 is a mixture of old and new. Revised versions of the 1.4 L and 1.6 L all aluminium Zetec-SE engines from the previous generation Focus were carried over, although the units were now renamed Duratec, with the addition of 1.6 L Duratec Ti-VCT engine with variable valve timing.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Focus_(international)

    gearbox is ford IB5

I would like to tune it. Can you help me? What mods are possible for my engine?
    Sorry for my english.

    and forgot to add
    He looks so
