    Bellhousing Alignment

When I built my tarmac rally Mk1 Escort I never gave the correct alignment of the gearbox bellhousing a thought. I just assumed everything would bolt up fine. Having just put a new inpu bearing (amongst others) in I am looking into it.

Is there a need to check and adjust the alignment? A box with a tapered input bearing has a small tolerance to mis-alignment but I do not know the tolerance level of the parallel bearing in the Type 9 gearbox. Thoughts?

I put the magnetic base dial gauge on the flywheel this morning but measured HUGE variances on the bellhousing. I suspect this was due to poor mounting of the base or the cheap rubbish tools I was using. Measuring the input hole in the bellhousing of course assumes it is machined 100% correctly!

Using offset dowels would re-align the box if needed but it appears that both the engine block holes and/or the bellhousing holes would need to be reemed out a little to provide the necessary movement.

Just interested if anybody has done this before.....

    Re: Bellhousing Alignment

no one does anything other than simply bolt them up, if your really worried you could get both mating surfaces surface ground then they would be 100% parallel to each other, but in practise your probably looking for a problem which doesnt exist

Which should be minimised by the spigot bearing in the end of the crank..........

Are you using the correct bellhousing eetc for the engine and gearbox you are using ?

And are the dowels in place ?

All correct. Dowels in place. I may re-measure but reakon I will just bolt her back up. Lasted 4 tarmac rallies. Should get at least 4 more!

    Re: Bellhousing Alignment

I had to have the centre bore of the T5 bell housing enlarged to fit the tilton concentric throwout bearing, as the made for T5 bearing base didn't fit.
Miltons did it, new hole was 1.5mm offset from old one to suit actual gearbox and mount (replaced input shaft bearing cover). also had the mating surfaces parallel machined with another .75mm removed from one side, as the tilton on triple plate AP needed exemplary alignment...
