    MK1 Mexico LHD exhaust system

I need a complete exhaust system for a LHD Mk1 with a Mexico engine. Can
anyome here advise on a sytem that would work? I think the man problem may be with the manifold.

Has anyone used these people before, what are your thoughts?

yes, the lower part of the manifold will hit the steering shaft and servo brake column on lhd application.

Only company I would trust is here, not cheap:

    http://www.martelius.com/verkkokaupp...ori=&print=yes

but I think the main problem is with the servobrake, if you retain it.

Definitely Martelius. Fits a treat around steering and servo tower in LHD application and very good quality, too. Also positive outcome on the roling road

Daniele, Flaming Have either of you fitted a 2" system. I have been told it can fit with different engine engine mounts.
    Any info?

    Thanks

James, just had a look at the Martelius website as I need a system as well. Is this for the 1300GT conversion to 1600 ?, if so do you have the rear dampers mounted to a bar (heavily inclined) or the more upright "semi turreted" ones ?. The 2" system they list is for a Mk2, there is a difference, the rear box on a Mk2 is wider and the angle of the over axle pipe won't clear the more inclined type of rear damper.

Re: MK1 Mexico LHD exhaust system

I fitted a 2" system that I bought in the past from Peter Lloyd uk for my '72 mk1.
The description said it was made for lhd application but actually it was not true. So i had to cut/short and weld it to fit.
I know martelius is doing good stuff, so my suggestion about them.
I've used original engine mounts, those I bought from Burton (rubbers+metal mounts) were too high so they are just collecting dust in my garage...

Yes its a euro 1973 1300GT tht has had a 1600cc engine fitted. The shocks goup through the floor, semi turreted.

    Yes

The shocks goup through the floor, semi turreted style.
I'm mainly worried about the 2" system clearing the steering and servo. It sounds like i may be ok on back box.
I ordered the 2" system yesterday from Martelius part No.s
    160010
    160002

The said i may need to change engine mounts to 'tilted mexico' mounts.

I'm not sure what they are yet, but im thinking the circular style instead of the retangular block style.

Completely different James. On a RHD car the Mexico engine (and the RS1600) sit with a diagonal skew in the engine bay. This is achieved with fabricated steel mounts, the carb side has a long steel mount with a 50mm rubber, the exhaust side has a short mount with a 35mm rubber. AVO OC sell the steel mounts, rubbers are avaiable on UK eBay.

Re: MK1 Mexico LHD exhaust system

Tony, I understand why the RHD cars need that mod with the webbers and bulk head mounted servo, and steering on the RHS of car.
On a LHD car it also has steering and same servo. But instead of the webbers fouling, I have an exhaust manifold to route down between steering and servo. I think this may require some 'repositioning' of the engine using motor mounts.
    Similar problem with similar solution...
But the opposite way around, if you know what I mean.
I will find out soon enough!
    Thanks for the reply

Re: MK1 Mexico LHD exhaust system

James, just checked the parts manual for you, Crossflow exhaust manifold, engine brackets and rubbers for a Mexico are the same RHD or LHD, an RS1600 manifold however is different RHD to LHD.

    Hope this helps ..... Tony

Re: MK1 Mexico LHD exhaust system

here is my car, you can see that I needed to short cyl 2 and 3 from lhd header ( so bought) to clear the servo

    http://www.turbosport.co.uk/showthre...ht=italian+way

Even after cutting, I needed to "massage" the servo tower with a hammer to clear it for engine tilting during drive.

From the pic I see from martelius, I think you'll not have problem with the tiny steering shaft, the "Y" (2 into 1) section has the correct routing for lhd app
My tailpipe is already very close to the floor, so I don't know if engine lifting/tilting will solve a possible servo contact
no problem for the silencers, the small one does nothing to quite the booming sound from the floor, so I fitted another straight through oval one, clearly of a different volume than the last one

but as said, my header has not been bought from martelius...good luck!

Re: MK1 Mexico LHD exhaust system

    just seen this thread,
I have a MK2 and after trying to match up a UK one from Burton, which is supposed to fit a LHD car ... cut weld, ... and finally broke into 3 pieces after used just one season.
Emailed Martelius, very helpfull. I wish I could find this company before, and yes it fit a LHD with servo without any issue, plenty of room, 4 into 2 and 1.
and don't touch the steering as well.
Don't hesitate to send them message. there are helpfull.

I will take pics an post. I do need a mid pipe support. I'm not sure if there is a OEM mount I can use. It hits chassis when I first start up. A mount would fix it
