    Spraying two-pack at home

    Hello all,

I want to re-spray my engine bay in my garage. I've done this type of job before using cellulose and got good results, but this time I want the tougher finish of two-pack.

I've been told that the fumes from two-pack paint can be dangerous unless used by professionals in a proper booth.

Has anyone done a DIY job with two-pack paints in a garage?

Fairly sure you need an air fed mask and cover all exposed skin. The hardener is a cyanate and the fumes it produces can be absorbed through any wet membrane, especially eyes, nose, hands etc.

You can get non cyanate hardeners, Jawell paints do one IIRC.

done it myself loads, i just used a good mask. BUT its not a good idea, overspray will stick to everything, and you need to consider your nieghbours.

also the spraying technique differs, if you are used to spraying celly you will probably get lots of runs in the paint

I've recently sprayed the offside side on my Sierra with 2K,as an experiment to see if I am capable. As Graham mentioned,it's the overspray. Not only it sticks to everything,it creates a mist, and the fumes get a bit too much. Next time,I will set up properly with extractor fans

there are some scary stories on net that said i have also sprayed it many times. i use a proper 3m disposable mask suitable for voc/paint , wear goggles if possible and cover up. and it can be flatted and mopped if required once hardened.

Thanks everyone for your good advice. I'm gonna give it a go. The non-Ico paints from Jawell sound interesting - thanks for that tip Tony.B

Use the right mask, like all these things, the health issues only come later in life.

I did a rear quarter on my car. I think the paint was ok, but the lacquer was 2k, which I guess is 2 pack ?

First bit of paint I did was just a test with no mask. Later did a couple of other bits with a decent filtered mask. The first time for a few days alter the inside of my mouth was pretty raw and can only attribute it to the painting !

The time with the mask I did feel a little but nowhere near as bad.

So absolutely get a very good mask, ideally air fed. Or paint with as much ventilation as you can get

Make sure you spend the money on a quality face mask (full face is best to protect your absorbent eyes!) and make sure you use the correct filters. Also cover every inch of skin. My first ever paint job I did in my garage using the correct gear and 2 pack. It can be done easily but take the proper precautions.

Cover everything ,Vent carefully no problem.get a good £30 mask .engine bays not going to be like a full respray ,So put some water around to catch the dust aswell ,Obviously not right in the bay though.ive done a few .And wear goggles cover up completely ,Horrible stuff ,But great results.
