    Tom's track toy (one day)

Well its about time i started a thread on my project i have. Now before i start nearly all of the work has been done by 2 of my mates (if i can call them that)Alex and Andy ribbens(front cover of classic ford "sideways" issue)So a huge thanks to those 2 already.i owe them both too many beers to remember.

The car was a 1300 auto with a genuine 39,000 miles on the clock.wasnt in very good condition when we picked it up over 2 years ago now.So far they have replaced the front end with new wing tops, new wings,a-pillars,slam panel, radiator panel and front panel.
We have all booked this week off work to get cracking on the middle of the car now.Today Al and Andy managed to get the OS inner and outer sill done, whilst i cleaned up all the welds in the engine bay.

I will leave you with some piccies cos we like those.Any questions im sure i will try and answer incorrectly.

    Thanx for looking

Looks like you've got your work cut out.

Not sure the wooden rollcage will take off though?

You wood have saved some money if you had just bought the panels and not bothered buying the car. There's nothing left of it!.
A lot of good work going on there Tom. Not sure about the wooden rollcage though. Does it mention anything about it in MSA regs?

Keep at it mate it will be worth it in the end.
I would say looking at what you have done so far is allmost the exact same panels i have had to do on mine but mine looked mint when i got it,amazing what paint and filler can hide

On the new roll cage design, not sure about your door bar positioning, could make it a bit dificult getting in and out

Thanks for all the comments Guys. All helps with the motivation. As for the "wooden" cage thats only to brace the shell.Dads a chippy so making it out of wood seemed easy enough and when i got back home monday morning he had knocked that up over the weekend so a thanks to Dad for that.

Indeed it is Graham.i will be reading the blue book thoroughly on this to make sure it is problem free when it comes to the scrutineer'spray:.
As for running gear im hoping to keep it simple to start off with(bit like me really).because im planning on keeping it for a few years im hoping to take it through many different stages.to start with it will just be on leafs with a panhard rod and probably pinto powered(dads old one has been offered to me)with an english axle and type 9 box.oh and 13" wheels with tarmac arches(basically like dads car).then through the years hopefully make it badder and madder.

Cheers Dave.It was gonna be N/A cossie to start with but there were 2 issues with that.1 is the cost of it all and now ive got 2 escort projects i dont think that is viable.and 2 after seeing all the troubles dad has had with he's one i think i will wait until we have cracked that one first before we start another.Plus dad has offered me his pinto if i run in TinTops.

Update of todays work to follow shortly

Are you going to be racing then Tom? Or is it sprints again for this one?

Sounds like you've got identical plans to me, mine will be a similar spec, so will be great if we end up at some sprints together

Poor thing really was in a rather sorry state! Really taking shape tho mate, hope you get loads done this week.

good stuff tom, if you use the uploader at the top of the page you can write inbetween the pics, so its better than using attachments although you may have to compress the pics first

Re: Tom's track toy (one day)

Cheers guys.and Graham i tried using the uploader but all my pics are a bit too big and i cant be arsed to resize them

    Here is todays progress.......
Alex and Andy managed to finish off the NS outer sill, then got cracking on doing the OS floorpan
They did however have some trouble as the shell was an auto it wasnt a straight forward fitbut Andy used his usual fettling skills and now you would never know
A little tip here is to not buy metal sheet from B&Q.for 2 sheets of 1mm thick metal came to 50.20.wont be doing that again.I even took a pic of it to try and get my moneys worth.
I even managed to get a couple of pics of the work i had done(which werent a lot)just cleaning the bay up and making plates.
Also got a pic of the NS chassis rail and fuel tank well. The car is still very rotten further backbut with more welding and plating it will get there in the endpray:.
Tommorrow is drivers floorpan and a bit more plating.Once again thanks for all the comments

Ouch, that's some pricey steel!! You'd have been better off finding a sheet metal firm nearby and offering them some cash for offcuts dude. But I'm sure you really want telling that right now

Coming on nicely tho mate, keep up the good work!

Thanks for the commentsand Darren thank you very much,i will bear that in mind
    Right here is todays progress...
Alex and Andy managed to get the drivers floorpan cut out, got everything cleaned up and ready to put the new one in.Yet again because of the auto tunnel it needed a lot of moddingbut as Andy had done the N/S one the day before he knew exactly what to doSaving alot of time in the process.
Once they were done they offered up the doors to see if they still fitted with the new sillsprayf course they did because they are experts at thisInfact the panel gaps were quite good as you can see
Then after that they managed to skillfully plate the rest of the floorpan that the panel didnt cover.Alex one side and Andy the other and they ended up looking the same both sidesYou can tell they are brothers
Andy also managed to reshape one of the gussets so the exhaust has a nice clear route.I think he made a rather neat job of it.
I also anaged to fit my new plate on my bike which has a certain website printed on it
So tommorows jobs are more plating in the engine bay and weld the first bit of "bling" in.
    Over and out

    Stevie
as for when its finished im not too sure. The boys cant always come and weld the car for several reasons and TBH this is the first time the car has been touched in months.Im not complaining one bit because i really appreciate the amount of hard work Alex and Andy have put into the car already.Thank you once again Lads.
The plan is to hopefully have it out and racing in 2010 which may seem a long way off but im in no rush,i would rather have the car right first time.
Todays work mainly involved doing a bit of patching here and there so the pics are a bit boring. We did however manage to get the wings and doors on so it looks a lot more like a car again. The doors line up quite well with the sills actually which is handy.
The pic of the square piece of metal is my first attempt at welding after Andy had set the welder up for me.I was really quite pleased with myself. What do you think?
So now ive got weeks and weeks worth of grinding all the welds back, bit of a shame because some of the welds are really fantastic.Oh and Andy managed to get the strut brace welded on aswell but i forgot to take a pic of that.I will take one tommorow for you all.
So this is the last update for a while until the boys have another mega blast at it again!
Once again a HOOOOGE THANK YOU to Alex and Andy Ribbens for doing some really brilliant work on once was a tea strainer. Now if only there was a way to make it up to you 2.Thanks again boys, youve made me a really happy bunny.

Re: Tom's track toy (one day)

Managed to do enough for an update
After using loads of flap discs and getting covered in crap and coming in with a black face(which i dont mind really) i have finally finished grinding back all the welds so the next stage i was told was to cover them all in some etch primer.Unfortunately i had already used it all so the next best thing was the high build primer i had.I liked doing this bit as it wasnt so loud and made a change to do something different.
Once i had done that i started filling over all the welds to make it look smooth.i had never done anything like this so if i have done it all completely wrong please say so
As yet it still needs sanding back with the DA but Alex has that at the moment(im sure you will see why)so i cant do that at the moment, but im happy with the progress
After i have finished that i think im going to make a start on all the little bits like the axle, leaf springs and so on,just getting them cleaned and sprayed ready to go back on the car.
If anyone can think of anything else i should do whilst im waiting for the boys please say so as motivation is super high at the minute
Thats all for now folks. Thanks for looking
