    Updated type 9 gear kit

Has anyone ever used the uprated type 9 gear kit from MKF on eBay.

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/152455854371

Seems a good buy with the better ratio 1st gear but can it really handle the quoted power and torque?

im looking at this as an alternative to the mr75 route for my turbo'd pinto

    cheers

    Brian.

Really? The tall 1st gear kit is available for £225 so you are paying £150 for a bearing and you'll have to pay on to to machine your cases to fit said bearing. Strange that no one else has done this mod over the years these boxes have been used, as it appears a good mod with healthy returns.

The modding on the cases can be done by the diy er using a grinder and rotary file, all the uprated first gear kits require this to clear the case.

The fella that fitted mine didn't do any case mods - did fit 2.8i needle rollers though - gears came from Burton's a couple of years ago.

Up to press I've done seven and all required a bit of grinding for clearance, but on a side note the ones I've done were either quaife or BGH kits which are not just the one gear improvement. Also the upgrade to roller bearing on the lay gear is a good move also there are improvements to be made regarding oil flow into the gears. While your in there these can be done, there is on the net a detailed info on how to do this.

Did he fit needle rollers, or the uprated bearing?

The Quaife 2.01 first gear requires mods to the casing, I would n't think a 2.9 first would need a lot of reliving around the casing.

I would take with a pinch of salt the power and torque figures the gearbox will take. After all it'a std type 9 gearbox with std gears, syncros and mainshaft so how on earth they can claim it'll handle those figures is a mystery.

The boxes I've done have been with the 2.01 and 2.6 first gears and all have had to be modded. Do recall slight variation on the back of the case problably difference between early and late cases.

That's the difference - the expensive one on the link above is specific to a heavy duty box and the cluster is meatier to allow this bearing. If fitting needle rollers then it looks like that was a standard duty box.

To me the difference in price is acceptable as it helps makes the gearbox a lot stronger. I've just stripped a standard type 9 and the needle rollers were absolute toast, and the layshaft was missing about 0.015" of material!

Give me the expensive heavy duty type any day REGARDLESS of horsepower/torque capability...

Does anyone fancy rebuilding my gearbox for me fitting one of these kits?
