    Zetec or st170 lump.

Looking for advise off peeps on here. Regarding either a 2.0 blacktop zetec or st170 lump in my project build. Haven't got a ££££ to spend. But after sensible bhp. Either engine will be running bike carbs. As that's through route I Wana go. Awaiting advise please. Thanks mike

ST170 is a far better engine but more complex and pricey to tune given it has VVT, Zetec will be the simplest and cheapest option, expect 160hp on well set up bike carbs and decent exhaust.

for the st170 to work properly you need to have electronic control over the vvt, if you cant/dont want to do that go for a normal zetec, that said on properly mapped vvt and throttle bodies a standard st170 will do 190bhp ones with a lightly ported head can go over 200

Thanks for the positive comments. Zetec would run nodiz and bike carbs. Or st170 would run megasquirt and same bike carbs. Both would be Running thru rx8 gearbox. Looking for useable reliable power.

megasquirt wont control the vvt, you will need the vvt controller that's being sold (dont recall its name)

why nodiz for one and megasquirt the other ?

    Zetec or st170 lump.

If your running carbs then you need ignition control on both
And vvc control on the st
Mega jolt will do ignition but for vvc also you may as well get a decent ecu that will do everything and u can go injection later if required

if you dont want to go injection and therefore control the vvt properly you might as well have a normal black top

no reason you cant do carbs but with mapped ignition and mapped vvt tho is there ? its just that in my opinion the cost of an ign only ecu plus a vvt controller mean you might as well invest in a decent ecu and keep it future proof.

    Re: Zetec or st170 lump.

Just put a ST170 lump in my car! As far as i know the only ECU to control the VVT is the emerald and its around the £700 new i think otherwise you need the VVT Pro controller at around the £200 + megasquirt ECU.

I'm running the emerald in mine with injection and going for mapping in a few weeks.

It just comes down to how much you are willing to spend to which one you choose!

Be interesting to hear what you get with that, what injection and any other mods have you done?

    Re: Zetec or st170 lump.

jon at emerald recons st170's make a bit over 200bhp with, k6 ecu mildly ported head, throttle bodies and decent exhaust, think he said 208 for one done not to long ago

    Re: Zetec or st170 lump.

that would make sense Graham, the base map on my emerald is for a standard ST170 lump in a westfield, with throttle bodies and a custom exhaust and the notes mention 194bhp and 161lb/ft. In theory this should be somewhere in the region that I'll get with my setup, hopefully know for sure in a few months, off to get an MOT on the 5th and just need to make a couple more tweaks before mapping

    Zetec or st170 lump.

Emerald is not the only ecu that will fully map the vct.
My mate is using ate t/ body's and another ecu (forgot which ) on a std st170 and was just under 200 bhp

Also I think the cost of the megasquirt added to a vct controller is almost up to emerald cost from graham.

It's not the specialist components Typhoon ECU is it? Think they're on the same industrial estate as ATE

Emtron can also control VVT. Very good ECU with no locked features, can also do compressed air gear shift out of the box

    they are using mba 9a4
i just read that both dta and megasqirt 3 can handle the full pwm control also.
