    Braided brake hoses

I'm planning on making up some dash 3 stainless steel braided brake hoses. I've never done this before. Does anyone have any advice for someone new to this? What materials to use, what tools will I need, and where to buy from?

    Any help would be appreciated.

I got all my stuff from Torques on Ebay. You'll need the PTFE lined hoses and the stainless ends with olives. All you need to do is mark the length, put some tape around the hoses where you intend to cut them (and use a very sharp hacksaw blade - you don't want any fraying), take the tape off carefully, then push them into the ends and tighten.

Really simple compared to the bigger bore fuel and oil hoses! Just be careful that the olive should be replaced if you need to adjust the length and require to re-cut them.

I use a slit disc on angle grinder for cutting after as said couple of wraps of tape helps to reduce the fraying.

Thanks for that useful info. The stuff from Torques appears to be good quality.

Are you supposed to use any thread lock or PTFE tape on the threads when making up the ends, or just build them dry?

Yep, no thread tape on brake pipe ends. What you do is cut as above, open up the braiding slightly, insert the olive so that it sits between the inner ptfe tubing and the braiding, then tighten, the hose end then clamps down around the olive and makes the seal. It's a neat system that works really well.

If I were you I would go to a company like "Hell" that'll make you your pipes up with proper crimped ends on to your required lenghts. I don't like the olive type that compress onto the ptfe pipe, the wire always seems to be in the way. Often when the nuts tightened it baulks on the wire and twists the pipe.

I've never had that problem - you flare the braid out before pushing the olive on....make sure its well seated, hold fitting in vise and screw nut down. If alignment is critical use a swivel fitting!

I can assure you I have done it the correct way Katana, I think they are a poor method of fittings for a brake pipe. A crimped fitting will always be the better option. Tiny little olives on ptfe pipe are better left for air line fittings in my opinion.

Got my lines from Rally Design, same stuff. Its best to cut the line with a thin disc cutter as said above. Remember to blow lines clear. I've never had any problems putting the fittings together. They are a very tough connection, never had one leak or come apart.

    Re: Braided brake hoses

I'm resurrecting this old thread of mine to ask another related question.

Two year later on, and I'm still working on these brake lines. I'm using dash 3 lines from the master cylinders to the calipers, but I've been told I should use larger dash 4 lines from the remote fluid reservoirs to the master cylinders. Is it common practice to use a large line to remote reservoirs? Should I do the same with the clutch reservoir?

Yes dash4 feeds to cylinders and dash3 from cylinders.
