    mk2 escort drift/track/roadcar tidyup

as some of you will know ive had this motor a good few years now and its seen its fair share of sideways action having competed in various drift competitions over the years constantly evolving over that time.

well after a break of a couple of years im now giving it a bit of a rebuild as there was a few things needing sorting etc. it most likely wont see any more competition from now on, just the occasional drift trackday and a few road runs, hence the need to get it road legal and finished to a better standard than previously.

the shell is still in excellent order, bar a few wee cracks from years of hardship, and a few rushed previous body repairs that i wasnt happy with.

so since starting the latest rebuild on the car its had a replacement rear quarter and all other previous quick body repairs sorted properly.

it will be getting an exterior repaint along with the engine bay and boot.

i was thinking about a colour change for something a bit more sedate but this would have meant a total strip down and repaint inside as well which i didnt want to do at this time.

besides its sort of well known for its present colour at this stage!!

in order to get it a bit lower and still be ok for road use ive fitted an exhaust tunnel to go with the new tony law 4 2 1 exhaust manifold i got for the car which is a nice piece of kit.

i also upgraded from the quaife 26z gearbox to a 60g unit which is more capable of handling the torque and abuse.

i had to mod the gearstick turret on the tunnel slightly to accept the 60g gearbox. no big deal as the exhaust tunnel section had to be blown over with a lick of paint inside the car in any case.

a mk5 tranny gearstick gaitor came up trumps to work with the long stick setup on the 60g!!

the exhaust tunnel was tricky to fit in situ on the car but i got there slowly and have the exhaust system mocked up ready to fit when shes painted. i also had to beef up the centre tunnel under the handbrake where it had cracked a little from excessive yanking!!!

the engine has also got a freshen up and is ready to drop back into the bay and be mapped when i get the car up and running again.

    Re: mk2 escort drift/track/roadcar tidyup

in my efforts to refine the car a bit i wanted to get rid of the rattly perspex door windows and go back to a wind up setup.

i decided to use original glass windows, for the doors at least as weight is no longer of big concern to me.

only issue i had was that the x bars in the cage would foul the window winders when i refitted them.

first i was thinking about removing one quarter of the x bars each side but wasnt keen on the idea, because along with looking odd, i may be losing some of the rigidity that the x bar setup adds to the shell.

so i came up with an alternative plan which worked out ok......i cut a couple of sections and regulators from the rear doors of a 4 door scrapper which have shorter arms allowing me to reposition the winders to clear the cage as is.

only slight snag is that the windows only go down about 80 percent which ill live with!!

will certainly look tidier when the carbon look door cards are fitted.

    more to follow soon.

    Re: mk2 escort drift/track/roadcar tidyup

another thing i had meant to do when the shell was originally being prepped was to blank off all the holes in the engine bay that wouldnt be needed as i was running a hidden loom etc.

with all the rush to get it to paint first time round this and a few other things were overlooked.

i also trimmed back the bulkhead lip and tidyied it up a bit as it had just been temporarily notched before when i changed to an angled throttle body setup.

after these few jobs she was away to the bodyshop for a while to get prepped and painted.

inside tunnel sections were painted first.....

and here she is....in full colour again!!! always nice to see!!

i think the satin black detailing ill give her a nice "lift" when shes back together.

cleaner looking bay now without all the cheeseholes!!!

looking forward to building her back up now!!!
    :super:

Nice, like to see under, especially the 60g fitting.
Gaitor for this box is not easy to find.

    Re: mk2 escort drift/track/roadcar tidyup

small bit of progress so far.....made a start inside.....got the handbrake refitted, brake hoses and loom tacked back up, along with re fitting the fuel pipes,... and dry sump hoses,...which had to take a different route to previously due to the exhaust tunnel now being fitted.

i also re located the brake fluid bottles in behind the dash for a cleaner look!

    getting there slowly!!!

    Re: mk2 escort drift/track/roadcar tidyup

well its been a while since ive posted an update on this thread but i have been busy!!

the build up is progressing well.......

new mounts for 60g box and carrier bearing made up. heavy duty 2 piece shaft came with the box and should be a good job.

i got a nice bit of work done on the car last weekend, including getting the back half of the glass fitted and front suspension built back up, so i could get her rolling again on her own suspension.

im fitting all glass back in the car which ive got lightly tinted similar to bronze shade. no more rattly perspex!!

also made a start on engine bay plumbing.

after getting the front end squared up i was keen to get her back on the floor sitting at the new ride height im hoping to run or close to it to see how everything was looking!

even though the exhaust tunnel was a bit of a pain in the ass to retro fit in situ on the car,....(should have been done on the spit when the car was built originally)....its deffo one of the best things ive done to the car this time round.

at the new ride height the 2.5 exhaust system can barely been seen under the car....result!!!!

im really happy with how its sitting now......and i reckon the back can come down another touch yet!!

next update update to hopefully follow soon!!

    Re: mk2 escort drift/track/roadcar tidyup

well folks, im glad to say, that this motor is all back together and finished,...apart from mapping which im hoping to get done next week!

i havent updated in a while what with all the photobucket shite, but have just discovered that it still seems to be working for me.

    so heres the final installment!!...

got the front end all fitted up...

along with the bay...all fitted up except the rad and alternator in these pics...

as the car wont be doing any competition as such from now on i also did away with the strut brace...gives the bay a cleaner look i think.

next it was just to do all the final trim fit up..bumpers, lights grille etc.

i went for aerocatch flush fitting bonnet pins this time round as well, nice tidy job they are.

the car is now running std glass all round which i got tinted a shade similar to bronze tint which works well i think.

so after setting the desired ride height and giving her a wee run to shake off the cobwebs...here is the finished article!!

as i said to someone recently..."the old girl didnt clean up too bad considering that she has been no stranger to abuse and torture for manys the day!!"

im well happy with the end result anyway!!

will update when i get figures from the mapping session!

its the gp4 fabrications kit designed to go on an atlas and drop link up to the chassis rails, that ive modded to do the opposite..ie....mount on the body and link down to the english axle.

Looking at that kit, did you have to rebend the anti-roll bar itself? Theirs just turns at 90deg, yours 45 and 45deg? Really neat solution
