Question Can someone confirm these standard brakes

    Hi all,

i am still ill picking up bits and learning bits about fords as it's mostly new to me. I need to recondition my brakes, i need to know if these are standard rs2000? I was told they were rs2000 struts and brakes when I bought the car. Without taking the disks off they measure about 250mm?

where is good place for standard parts? I want to replace the disks, pads and caliper pins as the passengers side ones are rusted and the brakes are binding.

also can you get pistons and seals from anywhere? I have looked on burtons site and can't see anything.

    Thanks
    kris

looks like standard RS 2000 kit to me, its p16 caliper, so should be easy to find a seal kit http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2X-FORD-CA...-/262842944910

im pretty sure the discs are 2.0 capri also

Thanks so much for the rapid reply, I would have had no idea that they were mk1 Capri ones too.

Would these be much cop with the pistons?

Sorry to put another stupid question in the mix but for some reason people on eBay are selling 245mm or 248mm disks, surely that won't matter will it?

    Thanks

Actual size should be 247mm and no it makes no difference! RS legs will have a bolted on steering arm - anything else and its regular escort!

Thankyou, I only asked because it is a 1.1 shell and had drum brakes originally so wanted to make sure he was correct in telling me they were rs2000 ones.

    Thanks

have a look at the steering arms, are they bolted to the strut? if they are then the struts will be RS/Capri

Also not 'specifically' RS calipers-most 70's Fords were fitted with M16 calipers as standard.

1300gts had removeable steering arms too, but the bolts are closer together

Re: Can someone confirm these standard brakes

Just looked and the steering arms are part of the hub so not bolted on, will this make a difference to what disks and pads to order?

As I said above they are about 245mm which is the same as rs2000 brakes?

    Thanks

Re: Can someone confirm these standard brakes

You need to look at what the bolt size and thread pitch is before deciding what caliper it is, a photo of them might help. Genuine P16 and m16 usually have that stamped on the caliper somewhere.

What's wrong with your discs, are they warped? they don't look in too badder condition to me. If I were you I'd get the offending caliper stripped down and the pistons removed. On inspection you can check the plating on the piston and if it's not badly corroded then a polish up with some fine paper might suffice. You'll also be able to measure the size of the pistons should you require new ones.

Maybe in the Colonies but not over here - unless the Ford Rally Prep manual has it wrong as well?

Sounds like KMP hasn't got RS struts after all! I believe all disks will fit as vented types are a common swop on to most things.

OK, I'll rephrase... there are McPherson struts that fit escorts that have different spacing. I know for sure as I got caught out in the early 80's, and unless you count Northumberland as a colony... plus http://www.turbosport.co.uk/showthread.php?t=412402

Re: Can someone confirm these standard brakes

It's probably the early mk1 escorts that had the closely spaced bolt on steering arms. All the std mk2's had steering arms cast onto the strut.

It's quite possible that those calipers could be off a mk 3 Cortina, it all depends on the size of the bolts that fasten them to the strut.
