Mk1 Escort - Crossflow to Type 9 Hydraulic Clutch

    Hi everyone,

I need to mate a Crossflow to a type 9
Gearbox hydraulically. I still have the cast type 9 bell housing on, so I think I will need a concentric slave cylinder

Does anyone know what kit to buy, as I have read various things about spacing the concentric clutch out a bit.

Finally, it looks like I will have to undo the engine from the body to get the type 9 in. Is there any other way of doing this lol?

    Many thanks

    Jamie

Re: Mk1 Escort - Crossflow to Type 9 Hydraulic Clutch

    Hello there,
I did this to a mk1 cortina and used a slave cylinder from an old mini. drilled 2 mounting holes in the bell housing to bolt it on and used a threaded rod as an actuator, threaded rod alloys for adjustment, it worked like this for years and the clutch was much lighter than a cable operation.
Putting a type 9 in will always mean you have to drop the engine and the front cross member any time you need to fit or remove it, and it will be tight unless its an auto shell.

    cheers
    Raymond

Mk1 Escort - Crossflow to Type 9 Hydraulic Clutch

Never done it but longer cross member to body bolts and disconnect the steering column is the trick. Just slacken the longer bolts until you have enough room. I have used the burton concentric clutch on my anglia on a different box works great and smooth just cost more than modding the cable one.

Re: Mk1 Escort - Crossflow to Type 9 Hydraulic Clutch

Thank you for the replies. I initially made the clutch assembly with the plate as you have described and it looked like it would work great! However after some measuring it looked like it would foul the body. I bought the concentric clutch kit and it looks good. I have yet to plumb it up and test it though.

Finally, I did mange to get an RS alloy bellhousing (looks like it's off an RS2000), so I think I may be ok to do this without dropping the crossmember.

Anywho, only time will tell when my brother comes around to help me shove it into place lol.

Once again, thank you for your help
