    Garage build?

    Hey lads

Living at home, need a garage.

    don't fancy concrete sectional

Thinking of a wood frame with 3x3 timber.
Cover sides and roof in metal roofing sheets. higher at front so water can run down lengths

    whats peoples thoughts?

    Re: Garage build?

I built mine with 4 X 2, the timber size used for stud partitions, and then used 6 X 2 for roof and cross braces. I live in a very windy at times area so it had to be sturdy, so the initial construction was to concrete 4 X 4, heavy duty timber posts into the ground. Another note, it may cost a little more but worth it because of the rot and pest resistant properties, is to use tanalisied timber.

    Garage build?

I would go with the 7.5 m option as 5 isn't long enough. As above use at least 6x2 for x beams.
Another thing I would do is lay a course of bricks first on slab then build frame(s) on top so when u sheet outside down to just above slabs the timber stay dry and water can't run underneath

All good advise - particularly the brick raised plate - don't forget a decent damp proof course under the plate. The picture above is maybe a bit higher to the gutter than a usual garage, so could be lowered a bit. If you can afford twin skin insulated Kingspan panels it'll help with temperatures and humidity issues. Don't forget a decent conc. slab - min. 100mm thick with reinforcing mesh..... 150mm would be better.

    Garage build?

Damp course Probably not practical in this situation but waterproof in mix should help

I did damp course and two layers of kingspan insulation with the floor but the biggest asset and what gets the most admiration, polish the concrete floor, its paints silky smooth and the trolley jack just glides along!

    Garage build?

Yes but still not very practical with only one course of brick

    Re: Garage build?

Any type of damp course between brick and wooden frame has got to be a plus. A damp course between one course of brick and slab would be a no no. Usual rule of thumb is DPC is three courses above ground level.

    Re: Garage build?

Dont forget you may need council approval for a structure like this.
6x6 is more common giving more room around the ends if cars and or space for benches etc.
No point being just a bit to small when starting from scratch.
Insulate it or it's no better than a tent, possibly worse.
PA door and roller shutter or tilt up/sectional door but your proposed heights limit your options there. You could go for gates but that takes more space outside.
Make sure you drain away from the structure and especially the house as water will damage footings pretty quickly.
Go taller if you can get the permit and afford it.

    Re: Garage build?

Fantastic advice, my offer got turned down on the land. However I am keeping an eye out for somewhere else that is in a better area. Fantastic input, just want to build something cheap to work on cars in, not to restore / hoard cars
