no point in wiring them, wiring wont stop bolts shearing

Apologies for resurrecting this old thread. I am about to fit a new CW&P to my Elan (same diff as Cortina) and wondered how to estimate the thickness of the shim under the pinion rear bearing. I got the ring and pinion from Burtons and there are numbers scribed on it-do they indicate shim thickness? Many thanks for any and all assistance.
(Graham-was it you supplied me with ZF parts?)

wasnt me how suppied ZF parts.

my recollection is that its the casing which dictates the shim thickness

    Re: pinion depth/backlash english diff

I'm about to change my diff unit, and I was wondering exactly how to calculate the preload, thinking about this post it look like way too much weight to just rotate the pinion without ring gear. Am I wrong? 10lb at 2 inches are 4,5kg at 50mm, it's not too much? Mine after like 1000km is about 0.3kg at 50mm, and it seems already pretty heavy to rotate. Can someone enlighten me?
    Thanks.
