    Mk1 escort crossmember

Hi guys, im having a problem with the engine mounts on my mk1 escort fitted with pinto.
When I got the car the engine was fitted with a rectangular bonded rubber mount (x flow?) on the exhaust side, and metal bracket with round rubber on intake side. Both mounts were worn so i replaced them with the steel version of the rs2000 mounts from burton. When the mounts were fitted there was a gap between the rubber and the crossmember and it felt like I was stretching the rubber while bolting to the crossmember, sure enough within a couple of days the rubber had started to split. I duly replaced with another making sure the engine was lined up square but the same thing has happened.
I have the feeling the crossmember has been messed with as it also has some flat bar welded to it to lower the steering rack.
Is there somewhere I can buy a standard crossmember from, I've tried escort-tec and GS with no luck or is it possibly something else that is wrong?
Is a world cup crossmember really that bad on a road car?, as they are readily available online.

    Thanks guys
