Just want to check something regarding brake bleeding?

    Hi all,

I have rebuilt my front calipers, how ever I have got problems getting enough fluid through the front bleed valves. I have never bled the brakes on a servo'd car but I assume it is the same setup that you work you way back to the nearest caliper to the servo. Haynes didn't actually say anything specific for a servo mk2 escort.

I have recently rebuilt M16 calipers on the front and standard 1.1 drums on the rear, how ever one thing I have never seen before is that the rear brakes lines go from one drum to the other drum, rather having a t piece or bias adjuster.

So am I right in thinking to bleed both the tears you have to do it through the bleed nipple on the near side rear?

also one more thing, I have searched on here and read that I have to adjust the rear brakes to get more pressure coming out the front, is this correct? I have good pressure at the rear for fluid coming out and hardly anything at the front. Which in my mind makes sense.

    thanks
    kris

yes to bleed the rear you do it one side only where the nipple is.

rear brake adjustment should have no effect on fluid coming from the front

Ive always bled the furthest away caliper first, its never easy getitng fluid through if youre using a bias box as the smaller separate cylinders displace less fluid than one large, i left the one bleed nipple open on front and rear for a period to gravity bleed then used a vacuum (syringe) to pull fluid through first prior to bleeding with the pedal.

Ok thanks for the replies, I may have to check the seal of the pipes that go into the calipers, I get some fluid out of the front calipers but not a lot - as if it's loosing pressure. How ever the rear def sounds like it still gets lots of pressure when the pedal is pressed with the front bleed valves open, I can hear the rear cylinders opening and closing.

I only have a standard setup as regards to the brake pedals, just have a servo that's mounted on a huge mount the whole length of the engine bay (I think it's a standard escort type).

    Thanks
    Kris

You could try an easybleed! Just make sure you drop the tyre pressure as per instructions.

I have always thought about getting an ezibleed thing, so I have just ordered one as it will keep my good lady happier as we were trying to do the brakes for about 1/2 solid pumping the pedal and she wasn't too pleased ha ha.

    Thanks

Was there not something about difficulty in getting fluid through M16 calipers when the piston was pushed hard back ie like after they have been rebuilt?

We struggled to get fluid through to rear...m16 front,9'rear drums,no servo, all new seals, pipes, cylinders. Tried gravity, pumping, etc. Ended up blowing the fluid through using pump and reduced tyre pressure(cant remember what pressure tho)and hey presto... excellent pedal and brakes👍👍

I have also done that and it seem to work quite well to get a new dry system some fluid it through. Just watch you dont leave it too long as it may drain right through and empty the pot

It hasn't been unknown to reverse bleed a system by pumping fluid through the bleed nipples and filling an empty reservoir on the master cylinder. I have never used this method on brakes but have had to on Volvo truck clutches in years gone by.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I thought I was going mad but it seems I am not the only one this is happened to. I will try the esibleed system soon and I will update you, it may be of use for others who need to do it too.

    Thanks
    Kris

You just need to watch you dont knacker the master cyl seals doing that
