    Plate lsd diff not working

I've got a plate type diff in my Mk2 escort, the other day I noticed it was spinning the inside wheel,

when i I got it with an axle I couldn't see any markings or make on it,

i think it needs a rebuild build but don't know what to order or where from?

Im no stranger to building lsd's into diff done loads but never rebuilt the actual lsd unit, is it hard?

ive got a trackday booked for 13 days time, that's all,

i changed the oil the at the weekend and noticed the old oil looked a blue burnt colour, it's lsd oil that I put in when I built the car and it's the same oil back in it again, any suggestions?

could it just be its contaminated with old oil still? The oil had done 800 miles and 3 trackdays included in that.

The oil in plate diffs discoulors very quickly. Best thing to check is to jack up one wheel and check the pre load, use at torque wrench on a hub nut or wheel nut if you have std shafts and see what torque the diff breaks at, if it's lost it's preload it may need a set of plates

Unfortunately you can have lots of preload and still have a diff that will only spin up one wheel , if caseing has notches wore in it where lugs of plates sit or ramp angles can also come into the equation, if its spinning one wheel, it doesn't matter what preload you get, there's s problem

I think there is a problem as it did work, I did a drift day and it worked well then, I've just changed my rear springs and it could be that which has shown up the problem.

Also looking round online, burtons sell a English lsd rebuild kit? Looking at additional info it's made my trans x, is that specific to trans x Diffs or are all the English the same?

Depends how its been set up but anything between 30-80ft/lbs, it could just be that you dont have a particularly tight diff, post some photos and i'll tell you type it is.

I've still not finished work, is it possible to adjust the preload?

I've posted some pictures, also worth mentioning every bolt on the lsd unit was loose, including the crow wheel bolts. Found a crack in one of the friction plates aswell.

I have spoken to seat wales rally spairs this morning, very helpful and nice guy, he said if I emailed him some pictures he will Id it, within 30 minutes he called me back saying it was a Salisbury lsd, he had the parts in stock and could post them out special delivery so I will have them tomorrow.

For the record I also spoke to burtons who were not that helpful and when I asked if I could send them some pictures his reply was we sell parts don't build them or work on them.

If all the bolts were loose the person who (re-)build it didn't do a good job.

I figured that, I've alsways used lock tight when I've built Diffs, this is the 1st plate type lsd I've ever done, done a few torsion lsd's, Detroit lockers, and are air locking Diffs on landrovers,

It does n't surprise me in the slightest that Burtons are of no help, why anyone gives them their hard earned cash is beyond me. I would never buy from them unless they were an absolute last resort. Use them for their glossy parts catalogue and then order off someone else that knows how to be polite to their customers.

Hats off to West Wales Rally spares for helping you out with your Lsd parts.

It's nice to know there are companies out there that still bother about customer care.

Nothing lasts for ever anymore. This sort of kit is given a hard time throughout it's life, therefore a little TLC here & there never hurts.
