thinking of getting a bike for commuting

haveing spent almost 2 weeks on the tube now going into central london and not really enjoying my 45min commute im thinking of getting a motorbike... its only 7miles door to door, so I could even cycle it, but I think that would probably do me more harm than good, and take me around an hour, so the option of a motorbike is very appealing.

I passed my drivers licence in 99, so I can technically ride a moped on L plates, but to be honest, the thought of being limited to 35mph and not being able to take a pillion isn’t very attractive (the bike would be a second form of transport since my ecsy is my only car, and not always practical in London) so basically it brings me to getting something like a 125

I think for that I need to do a CBT, I do have a friend who did one a year or so ago, so I can ask him for the details but he dosnt know much about bikes (he bought a hideous Hoysong (sp) thing)… and ive always fancied a supermoto

    So *adopts Terry Tibbs voice*

125 super moto, second hand, what can you get…. Talk to me?

for those that dont watch Fonejacker, that wont make any sense, but im basically trying to find out whats a good 125 supermoto type bike to go for

As far as I know, if you passed your car licence in 1999, you can ride a moped without L plates and carry a passenger as it is classed as a full moped licence. A de-restricted 50cc () should be good for almost 45mph and if you are only in traffic, thats all you'll need. If you want a 125 you need to do your CBT. You can only fail that if you can't read a numberplate from a certain distance. It only lasts 2 years so you will have to keep retaking it if you don't do your test. I would recommend a 4 stroke one - possibly a Honda Dylan - they are good for 65 - 70 mph and do nearly 100mpg. HTH

thanks for the swift reply steve
interesting that i can get a de-restricted one, give me an option anyway... im still thinking a 125 would be better, purely as it may be used to do more than just commute, and with a pillion too i can see a 50cc struggling.. as well as the fact if im going to go for it, i might aswell get something im happy with (hence wanting something supermoto stylish ) not sure i can ride something thats called Dylan too

    Oops!

No, the reason I say that is that I sometimes commute (if its not raining, windy or cold) and I use a Honda Pantheon. Thats just a slightly larger version of the Dylan and has the same engine. Personally, for short journeys I prefer to just to be able to jump on, twist and go - no half hour dressing up like a colour co-ordinated power ranger for me! I prefer the scooters though because the fairing and screen doesn't half make a difference in keeping the elements at bay - and you can store all your stuff - helmet, gloves, coat etc under the seat but then again, I'm just a fairweather wuss biker!! Each to their own.

You'll need to pass a full bike test before you can carry pillion passengers on a 125 though.

Re: thinking of getting a bike for commuting

a couple of years back i used to cycle to work, was about 9-10 miles there and back, did it throughout the winter, except when it was absolutely pissing it down, although i think i woudlnt go full power ranger, would make better use of my snowboarding gear, just with some body armour on underneath... at the moment i walk 10mins to the tube, i recon it would only take me 15-20 to get to work by bike, so in theory if i time it right i would get less wet

i cant see myself riding a scooter/moped, unless its an oldschool vespa or lamrbretta.. but that would defeat the object of having a reliable alternative form of transport

    cheers for the info

Go look at one of these, i know of 2 lads who have them now

its a called a Superbyke RMR , its a 125 learner legal, nippy supermoto style geared that can be picked up for 1500 new ...

They look well gud in the matt finish and are put together rather well

    worth a look

    ..........................

or go do your direct access (cos it makes more sence save doin the CBT every 2 years) and buy mine off me ...

its only a 6, cheap as chips, mine is an ideal 1st bike

cheers another one to add to the list, it seems there are quite a few variations of those superbyke rmr things, all have the same suzuki RM engine,

of course i might have to change my mind once i get on one, only being a short arse my feet might not touch the ground
