    Grahamb's Mk1 Fiesta XR2 Duratec HE Hillclimber

Owned the car since 1992. Bought it as a stolen recovered shell. Ran it with 1372Xflow for a few years, then took it off the road and started work on converting to Series II Silver Top Zetec 2.0.

Added Quaife 5speed SCCR box with ATB LSD
Disk brakes all round, vented four pots on the front, Sierra front calipers on the rear
    ATL fuel cell
    Jenvey TB's
    DTA E48EXP
    Grp tailgate
    Motordrive Seat
Custom made fully rose jointed front suspension featuring lowered roll centre.
Custom made rear axle, featuring adjustable panhard rod; all rose jointed; adjustable rear camber, presently -1.5degrees per side.
    Safety Devices full cage
Plastic windows, and rare steel sunroof
OZ Superleggera 15x7 ET37 rims, with Michelin slicks
Rally Design Escort Mk2 pedal box with cable clutch and adjustable brake bias.
    Single wiper arm conversion
    Electrically heated windscreen
Firewalls, log booked, loads of fun

Engine is standard, apart from Piper cams, and ARP bolts. Underdrive pulley, and Brise 49A alternator.

Won Sports Libre in MidSpeed championships in 2003, and 2006. Many firsts in class. Current class record holder at Cadwell Park. Usually fastest Front Wheel Drive at most events, and occasional top ten finish too.

Will be out again in 2008 with a new 2.1 engine, though may be starting season on existing 2.0 lump

As seen in Performance Ford, front cover of Retro Cars, last ever edition of CCC magazine, Revs, etc etc.

    Re: My Mk1 Fiesta XR2

Will be taking the car off the trailer this weekend, so I can start to prepare her for the 2008 season.

Will be wiring in the new heated windscreen, checking suspension for signs of stress and wear, and should be collecting the 2.0 Zetec which will be the basis for the 2.1 screamer.

Altiss are going to make a new inlet manifold for me, which means I need to drag her over to Markfield to let them have a looksee too.

    Re: My Mk1 Fiesta XR2

Good weekend. Went over to Church Stretton to collect a spare MCR rally arch kit for the car, which included a front spoiler and side skirts too. Bargain at £102.

My 2.0 Zetec I bought off ebay arrives Thursday, and the Eagle Rods and JE 10.5:1 pistons are now on their way from the USA.

Took the car off the trailer on Saturday, which means I can now start on the car for this season.

I'll be fitting my new front splitter this week, and painting the garage floor (if the weather improves) with some polyurethane paint I bought from Screwfix in leicester yesterday. Battle ship gray. Lovely.

A few questions for you technical people. I want to connect my brake fluid reservoirs to the master cylinders using braided hose. Ideally I'd like right angled connectors on the ends that the reservoirs connect to, and the same for the cylinders. Are these available off the shelf, and if so, what size connectors would I need. I've used a Rally Design bias pedal box, with standard master cylinders and reservoirs ie nothing exotic. TIA

    Re: My Mk1 Fiesta XR2

Wheels are off tonight, as are the Jenvey throttle bodies. I want to get the inlet manifold cut and shut to angle up the Jenvey's, which will allow longer trumpets and an airbox.

However, thinking back to my Vizard A series days, I'm wondering if I should go for a downdraught setup, using the Jenveys. Does anyone know if this has been done before on Zetec's?

Altiss will be modding my inlet manifold to angle up the Jenveys. SHould have it back in two weeks, prior to Croft on Easter Monday.

The entry list for Croft on Easter Monday is looking quite dauting. Still, a bit of frantic pedalling and I'm sure I can do some more giant killing.

Love this car, a real credit to you, the zetec and mk1 fezza make for a great combination imo

Any thoughts on going duratec one day, the lighter weight would be quite effective in a car like this I think

Thanks. I still get the urge to get out there and modify, which is the main thing.

For future reference, I really fluked the manifold, as everything fits, and I can still get the linkage on, etc. Altiss did a top job of modifying the manifold.

    Phew.

I swapped the fuel rail over for the new Jenvey TBR32 which arrived today.

Off to Crawley tomorrow and Thursday, so may be too whacked to get any work done in the evenings.

Just a few jobs remaining now before the giant killings at Croft on Monday.

    Finish the fuel hoses off
    Run the engine
    etc etc

    Re: My Mk1 Fiesta XR2

    Thanks Gavin.

Fuel hoses are now sporting dash 6 Earls fittings, and these were easier to fit than I feared. Didn't even stick any braided wire in to my fingers, which made a nice change.

Fitted a Revotec 7" round air duct in place of my near side headlamp, which means she now gets lots of lovely fresh air, with some ram affect at high speed too.

Just need to lengthen the throttle cable, as the new manifold has moved the linkage further away from the bulkhead and the cable was short to start off with.

Also my varley red top 15 seems to have died, despite leaving it on charge with an optimate 3 for months and months. I'll have to buy myself a new jump battery too, as thats also gone dead. I'll risk the varley, as the car does have an alternator, and I'm sure after some running, it'll soon resurrect itself.

Should run the engine tonight (fingers crossed) if its not too late/loud.

    Re: My Mk1 Fiesta XR2

She went like a rocket at Croft on Easter Monday. All the hard graft paid off. I ran a 107s run on my first lap, which went down to 95s on my fourth and final lap, which, never having visited Croft before, I was quite pleased with.

Having a copy of Short/Wilkinsons Hillclimb and Sprinting book made a huge help, as they have a decent +accurate description of every track in the UK, and with ther instructions memorised for my 4th go, I tried my best to take the Jim Clark Esses as quick as I could, and recorded 90+MPH through that section. Well worth buying a copy if you haven't already done so.

Great, my DVD is in the post. Did they capture my spin on the first timed run? The back end just let go on the first corner. I was a bit too enthusiastic after hearing Chris Wise post a 72s in his slick shod Mk1 Escort. Luckily I missed the straw bails or it would have been a right mess.

2nd timed run was a lot better, with a 73s, but that is still 5s off my PB. I hate spinning on the first timed run. There's so much pressure on getting a good time on the 2nd run, whilst trying not to throw it in to the scenery.

Your dad was saying that the CRX had a rev limiter problem at the last event. How did he get on at Harewood?

    Re: My Mk1 Fiesta XR2

We cured the rev limiter (bloody ECU engines ) but he decided to check out the marshals post at the bottom of the hill. So now I need a wing and a bonnet

The Mk1 Escort was good, and he went out on slicks and it suited him. Dad didn't change off the A048s all day, but I think he should have done.

In answer to your question... No. The DVD is just the timed runs, although there are a lot of casualties!

Propping the bonnet open was so last year. She now sports two black eyes so's not to look like she's lost a headlight.

    Thanks.

Not touched the head, boggo std at the moment. Just some higher lift cams.

My new 2.1 will need a new head though, fully intend to look in to CNC heads to keep costs down.

Aiming for around 220BHP, with sensible rev limit, and bags of torque for the slow tight twisty stuff like Harewood and Loton Park.

Took the car to Northampton Motorsport on Tuesday for a setup. She now has -1.5 camber and 3.5 castor on the front. Will hopefully feel a difference at MIRA on the 24th May.

I can easily dial in more camber, but she's frisky enough given the short wheel base. I'm running -1.25 camber on the rears too, which helps with stability on the long fast corners.

I'm running Michelin M00 17% treaded slicks (all I could afford at the time, but great in the wet and dry)
